I have a similar fault on the same unit but I have 4 flashes which I believe is memory error. I’ve removed, swapped and reseated the ram, as well as try one stick at a time in each slot, and also removed the HDD and swapped in a known good HDD with no difference. I’ve ordered a replacement CPU however I’ve elected to upgrade to a faster one, after referring to the chart with interchangeable chips, so I went with an i3-390 which was about $20AUD and is faster than some i5’s which cost a lot more. I very much like this little laptop, but they must have major issues as there are a lot of people asking similar questions. Thank you for such a thorough breakdown, I’ll be playing along at home soon!
I can see where you were going with the one blink code, ie 1 blink is CPU failure. However you should take blink/beep codes with a pinch of salt. Nothing on screen I would be doing a few checks before stripping. 1. Swap or reseat the RAM 2. Plug laptop into an external display to check for picture 3. Discharge the BIOS properly. If this didn't help, then move onto digging a bit deeper
Chris Paul thanks for your input however I had already performed these steps. (Been working in the IT industry for about 17 years now so those basic things are second nature which is why I probably didn’t include them in the video.) The video was more about how the machine comes apart physically rather than a diagnostic.
I have just had the same fault. I too replaced the CPU but still had the same fault. Bought S/hand motherboard from China... fitted and problem solved....runs great now.
I have the same issue with the same laptop , I use to fix the problem by turning the laptop on and wrap in a dry towel 'til it gets really hot. turn off and on rapidly after 20 minutes and it should boot
is this the same as the hp g61 by any chance? i got the same thing too and i needed to know how can i fix the cpu since i get the black screen as well?
Had it been my machine I probably would have given that a go but as it belonged to a customer I cannot guarantee the reliability of second hand or Chinese parts. This board seems prone to issues so I decided to write it off as due to the age of the machine and the uncertainty of any repairs it would be more cost effective in the long-term for the customer to buy a new machine with a warranty.
I have one of those, and I can tell you it's 100% or the chipset or the gpu solders going bad. My gpu solders were going bad and I needed to heat it with a heat gun so the solders would get softer and make good contacts again. It now works normally, but I never use it, it's slow af.
IMNOTA agreed, I have heated a few boards in the past to resolve issues like this with mixed results. Some work for a few weeks and fail again, some just don't work at all and others are still working today. This was for a customer so I didn't want to risk handing back a machine that would fail again so I called it a day on this one. If it was mine I probably would have tried heating the board as it wouldn't matter if it failed.
Yep, I had nothing to lose, If it failed I would have bought a new mobo, just as if I didn't tried. It was my first time dissasembling a laptop (that's what got me into computers, I got a little bit forced lmao), and it went flawlessly, it's still working to this day (I did it about 2-3 years ago, I am not sure), I upgraded it to windows 10 and it could be a nice laptop to go on RUclips if I did a ram upgrade, but because I never use it, I left the 2gb in it.

You should reflash the bios via USB, go to the official site of your model laptop hp cq, download the latest BIOS version, take an USB > format it via FAT32 > go to BIOS extraction folder > rename the first file > copy to USB > disconnect the HDD from laptop > with laptop powered off insert the USB > press power button > quickly press WINDOWS button (⊞ Win) + B > the flash BIOS will start + full rpm on cooler imgur.com/a/1bk4t7u

€35 for S/hand motherboard and upgraded CPU to Turion . Installed Win 10 Home upgrade from Win 7 .... I think worth repairing

Shame it didn't work I upgraded the CPU on one of these to a duo core much snappier.
What is the fastest CPU it can be upgraded to?
