- The 1968 Democratic National Convention congregated Democrats from across the nation to find a successor for out-going President Lyndon Johnson following his withdrawal from consideration and participation in the primaries. The race to replace Johnson was upended when the main challenger to Eugene McCarthy (D-MN)- who had assumed front-runner status after knocking the incumbent President out of the race- Robert F. Kennedy (D-NY) was assassinated in the Ambassador Hotel in California. Supporters of the most recent victim of the Kennedy Curse flocked to Senator; former director of the Food for Peace program under President John Kennedy; and staunch ally of the family, George McGovern of South Dakota to enter the race. Seen in this video is the former Governor of Connecticut and presently serving Senator Abraham Ribicoff nominating McGovern for President of the United States. The speech is remarkable for the barbs traded between Ribicoff and Mayor of Chicago and prominent party boss Richard J. Daley after Ribicoff accuses the Chicago Police Department of using, "Gestapo tactics." In anger, Daley shouts back, "Fuck you, you Jew son of bitch! You lousy motherfucker! Go home!"
Incumbent Vice President and former Senator from Minnesota Hubert H. Humphrey would later be nominated on the first ballot.
McGovern was nominated in 1972. Hubert Humphrey got the DNC nomination in 1968.
Humphrey was voted the party’s nominee in 1968, but he was not the only one to be nominated that year. During a convention, candidates are nominated and then voted on to become the party’s official nominee. Senator Ribicoff is nominating George McGovern for president (in the same way McCarthy was also nominated for president at the convention), but McGovern was not selected to be the nominee. This is standard practice.
Does the broadcast wrongly label him as Governor?
Ribicoff served as both the Senator and Governor of Connecticut! He was Governor from 1957-1961 and Senator from 1963-1981. During that 1961-1963 period he was Kennedy’s HEW Secretary!

Thomas Knock’s Rise of a Prairie Statesman, which covers McGovern’s life up to the 1972 convention. A second volume is in the works covering his life from 1972 onwards. Hoping it drops soon!
Vote Your Conscience by Richard Mariano follows McGovern’s 1984 presidential campaign and is a personal favorite of mine. Despite it not really going into the ‘72 campaign, I’d even recommend it to those who aren’t all that familiar with McGovern, just because I believe you get a better picture of who he was when he’s completely unfiltered and untethered to any national responsibilities.
What It Means to Be A Democrat was McGovern’s last book, released back in 2011. It’s a full throated defense of the liberal policies he advocated for and defended all his life and a call to his party to return to those traditions. It’s not all that long and relatively easy to come by.
