Yes, he was an orator in a tradition that has largely died out in our country. He knew how to engage the crowd, as with his rhythmic denunciation of Goldwater's politics, and how to bring his speech to a rousing climax. In fact, he was a much better speaker than President Johnson and I wonder if LBJ felt that.
Yeah especially because Nixon just prolonged the Vietnam war and the democrats lost their ground on the new deal legislation which Reagan scrapped in favor of neoliberalism
@@BobPantsSpongeSquare97 If Humphrey would have told LBJ to F-Off sooner than he did, it may have been a different story. Its amazing how LBJ sabotaged HHH's campaign for months after the Convention. Humphrey died in 1978, just one year after his hypothetical 2nd term. Considering the deaths of Kennedy (1963), Hoover (1964), Eisenhower (1969), Truman (1972) and Johnson (1973), Nixon was the only living President for a whole 18 months. Had Humphrey won in 1968 as well as 1972, he would've been the only President for 4 years, then his successor would've been the only one after Humphrey died in 1978. That would've been a whopping 6 dead Presidents in less than 15 years, compared to the last 15 years (2008-2023), when just one President died (Bush Sr in 2018) PS it's 11:20PM EST 2/20/2023. @madvocate0006 True. We could see another Presidential Die-off in the next couple decades. I expect Obama to go last, though no one really knows. On November 21st, nobody ever expected JFK to die before... Herbert Hoover.
The tragedy of that week in Chicago, was that this supposed “administration war hawk” was not either of those things! He was a great man who definitely would have been an improvement over the actual winner that November!
He did part with Johnson partially over Vietnam in a speech given in Salt Lake City approximately Oct 1, 1968, in which he said he would consider a bombing pause a worthwhile risk for peace. Following that speech, he gained support. Had he given that speech earlier in the campaign, perhaps it would have made a difference. He was caught, I realize now, in a delicate political situation. Johnson was lukewarm toward him, and only late in the campaign did Johnson ask Connelly to do what he could to help carry the ticket in Texas.

Abraham Lincoln was said to have had a high-pitched, yet very powerful and charismatic voice, much like Hubert Humphrey. Someone should do a voice-synthesis of Triple H doing the Gettysburg Address. Would probably be as accurate as you could get.

I fail to realize how anyone could consider Hubert H. Humphrey a potential "great President" when he's nothing more than a figurehead for the political bosses (especially Chicago's) who would continue America's ensnarement in Vietnam. Eugene McCarthy was more fitting to fill the void Robert F. Kennedy left after his death.
