Close-up card magic by the master.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    JAMES RANDI:
James Randi is the founder of the James Randi Educational Foundation (JREF). Randi began his career as a magician, but when he retired at age 60, he switched to investigating paranormal, occult, and supernatural claims, which he collectively calls "woo-woo." Although often referred to as a "debunker," Randi rejects that title owing to its perceived bias, instead describing himself as an "investigator". He has written about the paranormal, skepticism, and the history of magic. He was a frequent guest on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and is occasionally featured on the television program Penn & Teller: Bullshit!.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    TRANSCRIPT:
Question: Would you perform a feat of conjuring?
James Randi: I’m a bit of an amateur at shuffling cards. Ho, ho, ho. But when a deck is as thoroughly mixed up as this one is, many people think that there’ll be a red, black, red, black. I’m not talking about suits, now just the color, you see. Red, black, but it doesn’t happen that way. For example here, we’ve got three reds; we don’t need the joker in there.
James Randi: Yes. And we’ve got oh, there’s another three reds. No, this is pretty good, the colors - I’m just looking at the colors now. The colors are pretty well mixed in here other than here’s another joker that we won’t use in there. All right. Now. What I’m going to do is, first of all. We suspect that the colors would be pretty well sorted, or alternated all the way through the deck. But I’m going to show you something rather remarkable. Here we have a well shuffled deck, very well shuffled deck. And I want you to come over here and just give me your hand, if you’d be so kind. Step over and join me on the set. Okay? Now just hold, like that with the palm up, a little closer-I see you have a rich future. Yes, well in any case. I want you to hold half of the cards for me, would you please. And I’ll hold the other half. And I’m going to show you something rather remarkable. Look at this.
When I turn the back over, watch this. One black card on the top and then all of the rest of them red. Every last one. Wow! And taking a look. Hold those for me, please. One black card on the top just to disguise it, but in this case, each and every one of them black.
    Recorded April 16, 2010

I think people talking trash about Randi don't know what they're talking about. Randi is a top grade performer who debunks all sorts of false psychics and the such by spotting lies, deceptions, and magic tricks said to be the supernatural. If you must blame someone, blame Big Think for not filming this correctly or bothering to zoom out, but don't blame Randi for this, because he doesn't know exactly how it's being filmed, and it's not his responsibility to care for that when he's not doing a live performance or filming his own show.

Terrible camera work for watching a trick. For all we know he could have put the one deck down and picked up another off a table in front of him. Since he's a world class magician I'd guess he's doing something better, but from that camera work entirely unimpressive.

Houdini died from internal injuries he received from being punched in the stomach. Part of his act was to brace himself and them let a large man from the audience punch him really hard in the abdomen, and he would not move or feel pain. Off stage, when he was unprepared, a zealous fan punched him, causing internal bleeding, which later killed him.

IMO, the focus here is not on the card trick itself but on the many manipulative ways of presenting it, like keeping his hands off screen, barely showing the cards to the audience etc. It's a sarcastic comment on con artistry.

but if you're just a believer and not a doer, then you should really look up things like cold reading and such, there are many non supernatural ways these people get information and often it's just a bunch of quick vague guesses, most often in the double digits.
you may not remember it as such but this is a well documented thing that happens in the brain where it forgets all the wrong and focuses on what the psychic got right. i suggest next time you go to any reading, bring a recording device

Don't know you and wouldn't to know you really but if you're fortunate maybe you'll experience it in the future but you will surely agree upon your ''death''. What if a relative died who was close to you suddenly. You being skeptical, attend a seance anonymously and then see your relative manifest and reveal info only that person knew?

Why do people complain about the other Big Think videos put up today and this one gets voted up? The video is kind of pointless too no matter how much you love James Randi. I love his work too but I can see when the Big Think is having a hard time finding gems in their video libraries. Looks like a cult of personality is to blame for the majority of 'up votes' on this one.
If you have JAMES RANDI in the room, in front of a camera, why not ask him to talk about something important??? Sheesh!

  • @bennytude

Put h ttp in front of the link I gave. RUclips will not allow inclusion of full web addresses. This legal blog does not contain any gay-baiting that I'm aware of, but does refer to Randi's sworn testimony of complicity in a couple of decades of idenity theft. I don't suppose my quote from Randi's blog would be considered biased AGAINST Randi, but I merely wanted to point out his extreme hipocrisy and anti-humanist views in regards to certain subjects. Is his own testimony biased as well?

  • @bennytude
    @bennytude 11 лет назад

    Ok, idenity theft:
    triablogue.blogspot.com/2011/10/update-on-identity-theft-case.html
Does that make you happy? Here's this from his blog: "I think that people with mental aberrations who have family histories of inherited diseases and such, that something should be done seriously to educate them to prevent them from procreating. I think they should be gathered together in a suitable place and have it demonstrated for them what their procreation would mean for the human race." Dig it?

@thegyger Don't underestimate the science of deception. Magic is a psychology experiment at its funnest. James Randi is an amateur astronomer, free-thinker, and friends/ colleagues with some of the leading skeptics, scientists, magicians, and doctors in the world, including Richard Dawkins, Carl Sagan, Penn Jillette, and Michael Shermer, just to name a small few.
He deserves to be on any venue of intelligent free thinkers almost more than anyone.

do you relise that every one of Houdini's tricks can be done with the smarts, knowhow and materals. If he was really a psychic i would think he would do things that were imposable to do if he didn't have psychic powers. If houdini was psychic he was the dumbest man on earth. Because he never used any of his powers during his tricks.

"Hah! Ich bin fließend sieben Sprachen. Und doch, ich mache keine Rechtschreibfehler überhaupt."
Yeah, nice try, but that roughly translates to "Hah! I am liquid seven languages. And yet, I make at all no spelling mistakes."
