Parkway Drive "Karma" Reaction
From Byron Bay Australia. The street sign for Parkway Drive is always getting stolen.
the council actually completely removed it now because they were sick of replacing it haha
I have one in my garage, they ended up encasing it in a steel shell when we went last (2010) and one of my mates missed out haha
@@wowdoublerainbow Legendary lmao. Didn’t they end up painting the street name on the concrete instead or something like that?
@@jbasti227 I'd go there with an excavator
@@jbasti227 yeah it’s painted on the road now lol
Mariana's Trench by August Burns Red has one of the best metalcore intros you'll ever here IMO
white washed as well
@@highferaltruth Of course, the intro for that one sounds like music for a shootout
@@highferaltruth or the whole constellations album 😏
@@MrChaynes24 facts
@@highferaltruth imo the best metal core album as a whole.
Props to whoever send him this video, watching his face during the surf bust-out was priceless!!
Also, they have a really nice documentary you can stream. Authentic surfing Aussies that can't resist jumping in the water anywhere in the world haha
Sorry Geebz, seems they have a few now. 'Home Is for the Heartless' is the one I was thinking of: ruclips.net/video/W7X7wkRH1lQ/видео.html
@@JD_13 man what a line up
@@JD_13 drooling over that line up, jeeeeez
their first documentary was amazing too, shows how they came up
Their album Killing With a Smile is my most played album ever. It's almost goofy in it's melodic metalcore tropes.
The song 'Carrion' though is the most important song to most earlier fans
So many kick ass tracks on that album!
I’ll never get tired of “cry me a fuckin river BITCH”
Also my fav album by them. Deep Blue was pretty good but was the beginning of their fall. I am so disappointed by every album after.
@@XTheJenovaProjectX massive agree
@PapaBigBalls 86 boneyards and horizons were so huge to me
This is before Parkway decided to change up there style, too! This is one of my favorite pieces by them! Great decomposition, my friend.
When you have a metal video to record but the waves are in.
Would be cool to see you do parkway drive songs “boneyards”, “writings on the wall”, “wishing wells”, “chronos”, “romance is dead”
Chronos is awesome
+ Bottomfeeder, Wild eyes live at wacken, Dark Days
Romance ftw! That fadeout and when it picks up, at towards near the middle.
The ending of Romance is dead is probably still one of my favourite parts ever :)
Horizons would be an interesting one too!
Boneyards, Wreckage, and Sleepwalker. All AMAZING Parkway Drive songs that a Sea Lover like yourself will throughly Enjoy! 🤙
Fun story about this band, they played to a tiny, tiny crowd at my local music venue. To probably 50 people you could say, this was back in 2007 time. To think they now play massive arenas and festivals, shows how far they have come. All bands have to start somewhere and I was supporting them before they ‘made it’.
The bass player never played an instrument before joining the band. The first BP left the band so the brought in their friend instead of doing bass auditions.
No kidding? Wow! Thanks for that tidbit.
And how good has he done! The dude always jams hard too.
You can find his first show on here somewhere. He's falling over leads and basically just bashing the crap outta his bass lol. He got really good really quick!
Yep he was their merch guy when the first BP left the tour to focus on family. If you watch the first documentary they even have their mate sub in for Winston 😂
@@davesteer320 man I must have watched the first docu (back in 2006?) more than 25 times over the years haha ^^
i love how youre breaking down a song that 5 small town Australian surf dudes wrote at 24-25 years old in a 15x20ft room when jamming and yet its still so easily headbanged to and able to be broken down into simple music terms with snchopatted rythyms and really well choreographed music
You gotta do another one of their songs, Wild Eyes. Its a beautiful anthem, full of this huge coarse and melodic atmosphere. It has great contrast throughout with a very energetic arrangement.
This band is pretty insane live. The circle pit for this song is always insane.
I feel old seeing people call this an old song 😅 I remember killing with a smile album launch 😂 still my fave album of theirs by miles!
The lead singer of this Band is like my favorite screaming of all time!
Next time you do PWD, check out 'Sleepwalker', or 'Horizons'. Both sick tunes.
These 2 are definitely a must, especially Horizons!
This is my favorite band of all time.
Hands down.
Take your time and listen to all their work, song, albums, documentaries, interviews, live songs,.
It’s a wonderful time. 10/10 no bullshit
😂
Agree mate. They’re my favorite along with Architects.
Some other songs could be "Wishing Wells", "Bottom Feeder", "Dark Days"
Erra- Shadow Autonomous, or another song off their upcoming album is sure to slay.
Second this
There is nothing better than being in a pit when they play this live
Look up coheed and cambria, welcome home. Please trust me, you will absolutely enjoy rift changes in this one
Agreed
Yes! And watch the live session from Guitar Center, much better than the studio version!
Great work bringing Parkway Drive up - they’re Aussie legends! I first heard them back in 2005-2006 on late night radio, when the host goes “if this is hardcore, more please, these guys aren’t hardcore, that’s metal!”
There’s a yearly compilation on Triple J (national FM radio station) in Australia called the Hottest 100 where listeners vote on their favourite songs for the last year. Whenever these guys do a single, they’re often one of very few heavy metal bands who make the 100 along with The Amity Affliction, they’ve been fantastic for over fifteen years now. Glad you enjoyed it!
I have been waiting for a Parkway Drive song so thank you.
I tend to be long winded and have a ton of music for you. Maybe I should send you an email instead of posting on youtube but I digress.
(all older to newer)
Parkway Drive evolution of songs for you to check out :
2004 Hollow Man (not worth a video but listen to this and then listen to their flushed out version on a later album
2006 Picture Perfect, Pathetic (feels like the most mature song on that album, cool drum intro, a lot of switch ups)
2009 Horizons from the album Horizons (Song feels like a story, intro is soft into buildup, middle grows until peaks and then a nice let down from the high of the album) Idols and Anchors is also a hit and is a collision between their older and newer styles.
2010 (Deep Blue) Might be one of my favorite metalcore albums ever. Samsara (life is suffering) intro was what I used to listen to while doing planks. Alone has a similar pattern of guitar in it as you were talking about in Karma here. Home is for the Heartless and Hollow I hold near and dear to my heart. Set to Destroy is a throwback to their old style of thrashing into breakdowns.
2012 (Atlas) One of their most mature albums. Everything is refined and they branch out into songs like The River, Atlas and Blue and the Grey. The song Atlas has Winston pulling out some insanely heartfelt lines with acoustic guitar along with an orchestra in the background.
I'll let someone else talk about Ire/Reverence Albums since I didn't listen to them religiously like the first 4 or 5.
I think the coolest park of this youtube channel is seeing you dig out the nuggets of composer information while allowing us viewers to share our deep emotional ties to these bands as we grew up. You are elegant with your thoughts and are able to always find amazing ways to reframe and flush out the essence of what we love.
Anyway, it is late and the gummies are kicking in. I'd love to recommend more, but your backlist is probably insane at this point and we don't want to burn you out. Love ya Geebz. (Dave from the LOU St. Louis)
I think you should try out The Dillinger Escape Plan, i believe you’d find them interesting. Maybe try Paranoia Shields or Hero of the Soviet Union. They’re an aggressive metal (mathcore?) band with weird time signatures.
Saw them live. Was absolute chaos and insanity, but an amazing night!
@tyler Black Bubblegum or Milk Lizard ALSO he should try The Mars Volta or Protest The Hero :-)
@@josephberg1586 He reacted to Protest The Hero not too long ago! Hoping he does more soon.
Adam D from killswitch engage produced them early on , they were amazing.
Hey Geebz and everyone, hope everyone is having a great day/night :) stay hydrated, keep your body and mind healthy and sharp and keep on rockin' in the free world.
Great pick! Protest the hero second reaction coming soon?
Definitely either Heretics or Clarity !
Hoping for "C'est La Vie"
ABSOLUTLY ANY PARKWAY DRIVE IS MINDBLOWING!! These dudes from down unda rock. Been listening to them since they came out. So do you and your channel. Tripped up on your stuff one day and was hooked. Keep up the awesome work. Aloha from Idaho. 45 year old school metal head. You're doing amazing.
Fun fact, the lead singer used to be a professional boogie boarder before the band took off. Two of the surfers were semi-pro as well in Australia. Good times.
thanks for the share. very good song IMO. Never hear of this band before today, now I have to check these guys out.
So the town they're from Byron Bay, is known in Australia as central stoner/surfer headquarters, so most Australian interviews lead with "So, you guys are from Byron but you don't play reggae" "no, ah, we do not" "Right so, like why not?" "Well that never really interested us I guess haha, we play this"
Awesome band!! I used to crank Killing with a Smile. That was a whole life ago it seems now
Really would love to see some Every Time I Die on here. Wanderlust, Kill the Music, InRihab, It Remembers! All great intro songs.
I saw Parkway Drive live at Sonisphere Festival here in the U.K in 2011, and not only were they amazing live, and not only was the guitarist in a wheelchair with a broken leg and still shredding, but I also bumped into the bassist of one of my favourite bands, he was in the crowd waiting for Parkway to come on, and I grabbed a beer with him and we watched Parkway tear the place apart, and me and him started the biggest fucking pit, it was INCREDIBLE.
The bassist was Davyd from Bury Tomorrow and we wrecked shit together, so much fun.
And yeah the guitarist of Parkway was in a wheelchair the entire set with his foot in a cast, wheeling around just shredding the shit out of his guitar.
Parkway has been my favorite band for almost 15 years now. Seen them live 13 times and met them a few times. One of the best out there in my opinion. Recommend checking out the song Sleepwalker. One of my favorites from Deep Blue. Would be a good song to decompose I think 🤘🏼
Parkway Drive are a metal core band (although have changed their sound throughout their career) from Byron Bay, Australia! They are actually named after a real street not far from where they live, some of they living next door to each other growing up! They are big surfers and openly admitted that "board shorts and barefoot" is there style! Hope this helps in giving you a bit of background AWWIGHT" 🤘🏻🤘🏻
The Parkway house is Ben Gordons family house where they jammed, hence the street. So would practice there while playing local shows before IKTPQ and what would became the band Confession who would get them on board for their split EP Dont Close Your Eyes.
Ur great, i like that you react to many different genres and you have something interesting to say about the more technical aspects
If you do "Wishing Wells" I highly recommend following it up with "The Colour of Leaving." They're the bookends to the album Reverence.
Wishing Wells, yeees, this would also be a nice one! Cheers!
Hell yeah, Parkway Drive is one my favorite bands and Karma is my favorite song! Great day for me. They're from Australia and are badass surfbros! Some more amazing songs they have are Horizons, Leviathan I, Blue and The Grey, The River, Wishing Wells, and way too many more to list.
Okay, I saved this video for Friday because I was so excited-thank you to whoever suggested this! PWD is so near and dear to me. If you would continue down their path, I think you should check out something from Atlas (personally, love that record the most, but I really think you can't miss outside of IRE...personally lol).
Would love your take on maybe some less 'commonly' reviewed tracks such as: The Slow Surrender, Blue & The Gray, Sleepwalker, Anasasis (Xenophonitis), Idols and Anchors, Home is for the Heartless, Shadow Boxing, Five Months, Slight of Hand, Guns for Show Knives for a Pro, Cemetery Bloom, Writings on the Wall
Parkway Drive has really changed up their sound over the years, "Shadowboxing" or "Prey" from their latest album would be a great songs to compare against their older stuff.
Was going to recommend this song, especially seeing your connection to surfing haha
Cool tid bit: the vocalist used to be a pro kneeboarder
Review / Parkway Drive - "Guns For Show, Knives For A Pro" crazy song
Before a show I was walking to the venue saw Winston, had a good chat with him for like 30mins, then Jeff came out had a good 45min chat with him also he signed the back of my phone, was the best show Ive ever seen, there was a dude with a walking stick up at the front and Winston loved it, they have much time for the fans, I recommend checking out Horizons, Boneyards, Dying to believe, Carrion, Dont close your eyes if you want to go old school
Outliers(Retrospect) By Aviations or Lifeisgood By Bilmuri
Also would love more Twelve foot Ninja , it would be great.
+1 on Twelve Foot Ninja. "Coming for You" is such a wild ride around random genres. Musically, the acoustic version of "Manufacture of Consent" is top-notch, even without Kin's vocals.
Totally agree - 'Without rests music would be boring' - no clue who i'm quoting but it always stuck out to me when I was teaching music
always delighted by your ear! great band and deep blue is a great album! next up : august burns red - thirty and seven
Parkway Drive story, they got their name from the street name of the house they would practice at in Byron Bay.
They also created a tour of Australian surf spots, playing in regional towns along the way.
They also once camped out in a rusty boat on the shore of a lake in Europe, because for that tour they relied on staying on the couch, or in the van.
My personal recommendations are the songs:
Home is for the heartless
Carrion
Sleepwalker
Wild eyes (inspired by a crowd who didn't know the words to their songs so they just sang the riffs, leading to this songs intro)
Hope you see this, hope you read this, they are a band near and dear to my heart, I'd love to see more from them, Australia has a great depth to its alternative metal and "core" scenes, and would be more than happy to throw out some bands to investigate for future videos.
Love the content, keep it up
@keyofgeebz
Parkway Drive is a really cool band. They have a pretty diverse discography nowadays, so it would be cool to see other songs from them on this channel :)
Wishing Wells is a cool song, Crushed, Absolute Power, Pressures as well
Love watching your videos, Geebz! I’m a lyricist, drummer and co-producer of my own band, so I find these videos of yours quite helpful and instructive. Incidentally, I was just about to ask you to react to Parkway Drive! Absolutely love the band! Was actually meant to see them live last month, but their gig was cancelled due to lockdown. May I recommend to you their songs: Absolute Power, The Void, Chronos and Vice Grip. Awesome songs! Take care, dude👍🏽
Maybe can you try Misery Signals: The Year Summer Ended In June
Or anything from them really.
More people need to know Misery Signals for sure. Love that song and album so much
Amazing band! Try anything from them really.
Supported them twice when they where coming up. Just super down to earth surfers dude's from Australia
Thank you for doing Parkway Drive. Really awesome review to hear about my fav band. I find the more I listen to these guys over the years it's like with whisky or something they just get better and better and I love em.
It was destiny you reacted to this song first from them with the surfing lol!
You should try decomposing one of their other tracks "breaking point" or "Five months" I think you'd enjoy either one.
You should definitely check out Wild Eyes and Dark Days from Parkway Drive, very environmentally focused lyrics with the usual metalcore style. This band are so great and all really cool, fun guys. I've seen them live a couple of times and they're always happy to chat and laugh with fans!
Really appreciate you talking us through the nuances of arrangement, but also the emotional impact of sounds and music. Thanks for doing it your way.
One of the reasons I got into this bands they always had some clear so cal punk influences (I always think of Pennywise with the fast pace skate punk beats), cool producers like Adam D and Joe Barresi and they were one the most technical imo, I remember a time when ppl argued whether they hardcore, metalcore, etc the shit they put together blends seamlessly.
I've been binging your videos ever since I found your channel a few weeks ago and I gotta drop into the comments to show some love real quick before I head over to get you a cup of coffee. Your analysis is incredibly insightful and enjoyable. Keep the awesome stuff coming! I'm sure you're not short on requests and that these may have already ended up in your comments, but if you're ever in need, it's tough to go wrong with "Flying Whales" by Gojira, "Gently" by Slipknot, or "A Little Piece of Heaven" by Avenged Sevenfold. 🤙
August Burns Red drummer has great cymbal sounds. Different and noticeable. Also, you gotta do:
“Break those bones whose sinews gave it motion,” by Messhuga.
About to start this video. fun fact about parkway drive, they planned there early tours around surfing locations they wanted to visit
The song by Parkway Drive that I cannot recommend enough is Leviathan I (the letter "i"). It has such a sway in pace and tonal range and I think they did a really good job of giving it a "tidal" kind of feel in how it ebbs the way it does.
Also! My daily nuisance to try and convince you to check out the UK band Sylosis especially if you're going to continue on a path of the more "heavy/hardcore" style bands like this.
there we go, some good old PWD in the afternoon makes me happy
I thought before I even clicked on the video, oh he's going to love the surfing!
Aw yes! Great to see some Aussie music represented. Hardest working band, their albums do well in our charts despite limited radio play. From their earlier days they toured hard, not just capital cities but small towns all over the country and amassed a huge following. They play a tight live show!
'super cool riff hook bomb' i love it
Dude. Your reactions are the BEST! New favourite reaction channel 🤙🏻
How's it and welcome back! New bands and songs to blow the mind, prog metal. Soen: Opal (Swedish prog metal), Borknager: Winter Thrice (Norwegian prog metal), DImmu Borgir: Progenies Of The Great Apocalypse (Norwegian symphonic black metal), Eluveitie: Omnos (swiss folk) Recycle: Katatonia: Heart Set To Divide, Draconian: Sleepwalkers, Opeth: Burden...
Parkway drive, have a movie of how they started and what they went through, a very good watch :D
Parkway was a big one for me back in the day, Romance is Dead is definitely a good song to check out
I highly recommend looking up the lyrics to this song. They are phenomenal.
Aussie boys🤘🇦🇺
Two of my favourite older PD songs I recommend are ‘Carrion’ and/or ‘Five Months’. One of my favourite newer PD songs I recommend are ‘The Void’.
I’d love if you checked out a band called Story of the Year. Have some simple but great songs, reminds me my teenage days and all the friends I haven’t spoken to in like 10 years. Very nostalgic band for me.
Keep up the good work and content Geebz, we love you, man 🤙🏻
Story of the year - And the hero will drown!
Really reminds me of my youth, great band I almost forgot about :D
I’m loving your channel mate you break songs down so well so loving it right now
If you're considering more Parkway Drive, "Leviathan I" is probably my favourite, it's a tad underrated.
If you're after some completely left field Aussie stuff, try Testeagles and Sunk Loto.
Keep up the great work!
Parkway Drive is a favorite. Amazing band. Great live. Seen them multiple times. Got to open for them once.
If you do more from them you definitely need to check out “the river” or “blue and the grey” both are incredibly underrated songs. Even amongst their own fans.
"Wishing Wells" way my gateway into Parkway Drive.
It is such a brutal song, and from what I've seen of their earlier stuff like this (which is decent!), everything in the album Reverance is so much more mature and evolved, the whole album is incredible. I'm sure many fans prefer the early stuff as with a lot of bands, but Wishing Wells was one hell of an intro to them for me.
I would be one of those people. First four albums are the best for sure.
Parkway Drive - "Bottom Feeder" and "Wishing Wells". G'Day from The Land Down Under.
About time we got some good ol metalcore on the channel!
To somehow mesh the two artists this day (Parkway drive and Deftones) I would recommend Poison the Well, especially the album You come before you. This band is not active anymore but I still listen to this album.
My home band! I grew up 4 hours from where they are, travelled down with friends and acquired a Parkway Drive sign back in the day hahaha. They are brilliant. As noted by others, they have a documentary on them travelling, surfing and touring. Highly recommend it.
Another two songs I'd like to recommend to you;
The Blue and The Grey - criminally underrated
Wishing Wells - from their latest album. Very aggressive/rage inspired song.
That into is so bad a$$!
Love the vids today Geebz! I’ve heard these guys’ name before but never gave them a chance until today. They sound pretty good! Thanks for this bring on some Byzantine awwright!! 🤘🏼
I love the little surfing intro :) I am seeing you are getting a lot of metal request. thought I would throw my recommendation in there... An instrumental song called Vice Wave by a band called Night Verses. Very technical, very cool!
I think for someone like you, you would enjoy either Horizons or Chronus. More melodic and technical I spose. Not to mention the depth to the songs and the musical journey they both take you on. I'm really enjoying your videos especially the technical musical side you bring that many other channels lack. Thank you and keep it up dude.
OMG you're onto Parkway Drive, I'm so happy, would love to see you do some of their live stuff, winstons voice is a fucking machine.
Humanitys Last Breath please, seriously heavy, evil and impressive cinematic way to compose musically! it will blow your mind, I promise!!
Parkway drive HORIZONS, is a song you need to check out. An amazing journey of sound🤘🤘
Cool thing about parkway is that they are all diehard surfers from the most chilled out surf town in Australia- Byron bay
That is them riding the waves!!
"Cemetary Gates" by Pantera. Another band, besides Candiria's recommendation i left, that will change your life. The guitarist dimebag darrell was and still is considered one of the best on this planet. Lots of raw emotion and feel to his playing!
Insane how even to this day Dime’s influence can still be heard in countless players
Please do more PARKWAY DRIVE!!!
I'll request it on this video as well, please add Dark Tranquillity - Iridium to your list :) I promise zero regrets - and if you decide to listen to more of the band, every single album shows the band's development and is unique in it's own way, so it's a great journey to go through :)
So excited to see you react to Parkway Drive. I've seen PWD live and they seem to speed up their songs even faster a bit when playing live. Super excited to see you continue to branch out into different genres and bands. Keep up the amazing work! Another metalcore song/band you can check out is Beauty in Tragedy by August Burns Red. I think you'd enjoy reacting to that song and band.
Either 5 months or Wild Eyes are their most stand out songs to me. Absolute masterpieces of melody.
this is basically the definition of metalcore, during its peak. the newer stuff you were referring to as metalcore previously wasn't really it, it might have just had elements of it or be an evolution of it.
Nice reaction as always Geebz! For some of this nostalgic heavy stuff, I recommend and vote for Underoath-Too Bright To See Too Loud To Hear.
One of my top three easily!! Boneyards is a personal favorite song of mine.
Please do RUSSIAN CIRCLES - HARPER LEWIS
They have 2 documentaries on youtube. One of them discusses how they found their guitarist. He used to surf and play guitar at their surf spot, so they asked him to join their band and the rest is history. They have a cool history.
Sleep walker you gotta do it man...deep meaning and great song
I think "crushed" would be also a good pick for a decomposition :)
