  • As the U.K. gets ready to celebrate the coronation of King Charles III, at least one Commonwealth nation is preparing to sever ties with the monarchy - Jamaica. CBC’s Ellen Mauro went to Jamaica and explains why the Caribbean nation is moving to become a republic by 2025.

Jamaica has been free to create its own head of state for sixty years and there are no obstacles in the way beyond getting the consent of the Jamaican people..

Yes compensation for Jamaica so it should be invested in medical coverage, investments, Building Infrastructure, and social programs and especially an ambulance system and job creation for the people of Jamaica.🙏🏽🙏🏽❤💛💚🖤💜💜💜💜

The British monarchy does not determine membership in the Commonwealth. Being a sovereign and/or head of a state is entirely different from the Commonwealth. There are countries that were never colonized by the UK that are part of the Commonwealth, for example, Mozambique and Rwanda. There are countries that were British colonies now turned republics but they are still part of the Commonwealth. If any countries leave the Commonwealth it would have negative effects on trade for the UK. I would also like to add the option to fully sever ties with the British monarchy has never been made available, especially, during the "boiler plate" era of British decolonization (1940-1980). In many of these nations, the monarchy remained as their head of state even after some countries drafted their own constitutions. The reason for this is because whenever you mention the word "decolonization", part of it suggests you're acknowledging a wrong that was perpetrated on a community, country or environmental setting. The Royals and the British government during those times were not able to come to grips with this notion. This is part of the reason why the Royalas well as the UK government installed themselves as head of state in these countries.

So then what history do you want to keep. Even the apology can’t erase history. What is the strength in your country that will change the people.

Jamaicans r more upset about the waste of public funds for the upkeep of the monarchy’s rep., the GG, who does nothing tangible…the waste of money on the Island while so much needs to b done…no real job creation save for the modern day plantation system of service in hotels n BPOs….low wages having to somehow meet inflated prices due to our worthless currency, which has to meet prices etc based on US$… .we seem to b on the same winepress, generation after generation…the same cycle of prosperity being measured by aesthetics ….the few at the expense of the many…political tribalism diverting our focus …. Bob’s lyric, “Old pirates, yes, they rob I / Sold I to the merchant ship’ , translates to this modern day slavery …we have to stop being pawns to the parties that ironically emerged from our trade movement bk in the day, fighting for job security, better wages n the growth that these improved factors would bring to our people, especially the rank n file….we have to regain our sovereignty in all aspects….we have to stop the infighting ….it is a truism, that TOGETHER WE STAND, DIVIDED WE FALL…
