That's the safest way to pick them up, where the fins connect to the body.
They're more like paddles
Here we call that a "siri" (not the app), but yall call them swimming crabs. They are a certain family of crabs which are basically just flat and have paddles for their back legs
they are called swimmerettes. the place you pick them up is the peduncle where the swimmerette connects to the body.
I remember being on the bay finding two of these guys. One of them was facing towards the sun on top of the other one while the other one was actively carrying it out to see in a kind of defensive stance, almost like it was protecting it. Ever since I’ve loved crabs.
That is one awesome video! Almost made me jump a little when the crab lunged at the camera! Those things can move as fast as a rocket when they need to! So cool!
It was a fun random video to shoot.

I always forget crabs can do the cool flappy thing with their back legs to swim, and this is a really great example of that!

I saw a red crab in the water nearby in the waves. I wanted to catch it but I was like nope I give up. It was cool though. It was about that size of this crab in the video. It was at Destin, Florida
it’s called a bocourti crab it’s a blue crab but red and i call them twins bcuz one is blue and one is red 😂😂😂

I actually work in the commercial blue crab business I bet you didn't know they actually have a rather weak Venom in the points that stick out of the sides of their bodies if it stabs you in the hand your hand will get really numb
