Welcome to an awesome hobby! Down the rabbit hole we go. Our bottle was such a pleasant surprise that we plan on doing another new riff review very soon!
I love New Riff. Keep an eye out for their Balboa Rye. That stuff is amazing. Their Backsetter stuff is pretty good too, but I think that may have been a one-off release; it was essentially bourbon or rye (they made both) made with a sour mash containing peated, malted barley. It was some good stuff. I picked up a barrel pick of their bourbon not too long ago, and that was also really good. It tasted like apples and cloves. It was a great fall dram. You really can't go wrong with anything from New Riff.
Luckily we see quite a few of their more allocated or special releases in our area. So, we will definitely be picking up some for future reviews. In fact, we actually just picked up a special release from them this week and will be reviewing in the next month or so!
So I have a single barrel from them and it is a very enjoyable pour. My bottle has zero oak influence. It's very soft and easy to drink. I'd call the balance way off in my opinion. Just too sweet and soft with no spice.
Honestly the one I tried was underwhelming. Now it was at a bar and I don’t know how long it had been open or how much was in the bottle. But it really wasn’t that good. Will I give it another try sure for the price is decent and I realize single barrels can vary. And I had the same issue with Green River the regular bourbon was not great. In fact I won’t be buying another and like the New Riff I’ll give the other bottles a shot I’m a wheat and rye fan. Not sure about the full proof I’d like to try before I buy. Enjoy!!🥃🥃🥃
Interesting. Yes could have been an old bottle, but maybe the rye would be more up your alley? We need to pick up a New Riff rye next and review. There are bound to be honey barrels out there, just tough to keep trying until you find one. More liquor stores allow you to sample before you buy. We enjoyed this bottle much more than green river.
Why have we been sleeping on New Riff???
No clue 😅
Just finished my first New Riff Bourbon SIB. SOO approachable and well balanced.
Great balance - you are absolutely right. Can’t wait to explore this brand more.
I am new to the bourbon rabbit hole, however my 4th bottle i bought was New Riff Single Barrel at 114.5 proof and it was sooooo good!!!

New riff SIB store pick that I have is fantastic. I'll pick up many more.
That’s what we need next. Some store picks!
Overall these are great, but the right picks of these are downright delicious.
We need to try out some picks next. Totally worth every penny after this experience

Cool looking bottle I'm sold
We’ll send you a sample, brother!
looks like wine
Their Malted Rye and Balboa Rye are both excellent.
We see them all the time. It’s time we picked some up!

Very interesting. Maybe quite a bit of variation between single barrels then? Ours was pretty potent and aromatic.
I've had three of the New Riff Single Barrels and they've all seemed sweet, soft, and light on spice.
