You might’ve missed them in 2014 because they were the first group from their small company! They used to busk in the street to promote in their earliest days. And the members did their own hair, makeup, and choreography. (They really bolstered their vocals and performance skills because many people looked down on them for their appearances. Predebut, some people once asked their CEO why he would even debut them.) They gained a lot of domestic attention after appearing on Immortal Songs. (Definitely check them out on that show. Their performances are mind blowing.) Mamamoo became a lot more popular internationally after Hip (and before that, Starry Night), but they have been VERY popular with South Korea for years. They’re quite recognized, actually. Sadly, their company isn’t exactly active in promoting them internationally.
Wow that's amazing! Thanks for the info. We had definitely heard of them years ago but we didn't properly listen to/watch them... big regrets! Knowing their backstory just makes them even more impressive to us, we're so excited to keep watching! 🥰
Piano Man is also absolutely one of my favourite songs from Mamamoo haha, I think what I love most about them are their playful songs, like Taller Than You (1cm) and Sleep in the Car. all based on their own complaints about each other's heights and sequence of members for makeup/hair/show prep respectively 🤣
much of their earlier stuff was pretty retro, with anything from a '20s to a '70s feel, and a lot of that was actually due to esna, who was one of their labelmates and also co-wrote or co-composed many of their songs. in fact, several of these songs were originally created by esna for herself (one of their predebut songs/mvs, "don't be happy" with bumkey was one of those. the other predebut song/mv, "peppermint chocolate" featured k.will). esna is an american singer/songwriter who joined rbw when she moved to korea the moustache thing is one of mamamoo's trademarks, since the korean word for moustache sounds pretty similar to the korean word for ambuguous, which also sounds similar to 'mamamoo'. so they worked that into both their greeting and debut song's choreo and have stuck with it ever since "mr ambiguous" actually started out as a song called 'mamamoo' based off the adlibs used throughout it. it was originally an english song written by kim dohoon, one of mamamoo's company's two ceos, for quincy jones while he was in south korea and performed by the then un-debuted (and unnamed) 5 member girl group training under kdh's agency. mr jones passed on the song, which then got reworked into the group's debut song and one of the staff members suggested using the song's original name as the gorup's name... and thus mamamoo was born (the original 5th member dropped out shortly before the group debuted, though she's still good friends with all the members, esp solar and hwasa. she was originally the eldest and the leader, so both those roles suddenly got dropped into solar's lap unexpectedly) don't have much to say about "piano man" that wasn't already covered just... check the lyrics for the song. it's very, very much full of innuendo and is the first of many subtly racy songs mamamoo has done (even their more directly racy songs tend to go about it without being super blatant) "ahh oop" was originally esna's song, she wrote it for herself and wanted it to be her debut song. the company convinced her to share it with mamamoo, then because of the way knets treated esna ('too old', 'too ugly', all the hate mamamoo has gotten since day one), the agency phased her out of promoting her own song, so people tend to think it's mamamoo featuring esna, despite it being the other way around. after that mistreatment, she left the agency (don't blame her in the slightest for that) and moved back to the states. she doesn't have anything against any of the artists under the agency, but hates the agency itself (understandably so). in fact, any time mamamoo comes to the states, esna tries to ensure she's their translator just so she can see her girls again, and squees over them on instagram whenever it happens
The best way to enjoy any Mamamoo song is not just the MV but the live stages too - their live vocals just elevates the song to another level and cannot be missed. I stanned them from debut era but watching the live music stages sealed the deal for me and I haven't looked back since!
Joined the Raddish Kingdom (not a pun to the fact they were on Queendom) but I became a MOOMOO in 2017 around the Egoristic Era. . Egotistic was my first MMM MV it kept appearing on my recommended which annoyed me, then I got real annoyed at my sister one day and just decided to distract my self with a new song.. . Guess I chose the exact right distraction, I went straight to learning names and faces within mere hrs. Then by the end of the week I was All. Over. There. Discography. It was a great time to be a brand new MOOMOO. Soooo much MMM progress from then to now let me tell ya. MAMAMOO FIGHTING!!!
Piano Man and Wind flower are definitely my favorite Mamamoo title tracks, but there is no bad song in they discography. excited to enjoy your journey 🥰
glad you started a Mamamoo journey here. love your reaction. by the way, since you seem to start in sequence from their debut back in 2014, i thought you should not miss their two stunning pre-debut songs. "Don't be happy" and " Peppermint chocholate". both songs already showing their talent before their debut. please enjoy.
You guys are in it for a treat, that Showtime with GFriend is such a blast. Like GFriend is chaotic, but Mamamoo is on a whole another level and to think that there's only 4 of them 😂 They can be loud AF. Looking forward to your Mamamoo journey
oh man... on the showtime series you're starting... it's crazy how shy gfriend and mamamoo were around each other, especially considering it wasn't even their first time together. about a year prior to the show, gfriend had actually stormed into mamamoo's waiting room at a music show they were both promoting on. this was pre-planned because mmm was waiting on them to show up so they could do a vlive together. they were ridiculously awkward together in that live, which managed to continue into their second time together (the showtime series) and even their third appearance together (an episode of weekly idol) mamamoo has their own show on their channel, btw, 'mamamoo tv'. though not every episode has subtitles on the official channel. there are some real gems in this, though not everything is really reaction-worthy (it's all very much worth watching, though, esp to get a feel of how these women really are). there's a spreadsheet passed around, generally called the moomoo bible, that has links to subtitled uploads of all their shows, interviews, behind the scenes and more, often translated by fans for everyone else, if you guys want a link to that. it's pretty big, but also pretty well organized. several other fanclubs for other groups have started doing similar for their own artists after seeing that spreadsheet for the first time
thank u for reaction! u reminded me how much I love mamamoo cuz recently I've been obsessed with onewe and oneus (just explored these hella talented younger brothers of mamamoo, like it's been a couple of months) and I will be obsessed with them but mamamoo is mamamoo
Yes the girls got "Punk'd" on camera in Mr. Emaemaeho, the actress 'producer' was criticizing harshly before going "ha ha got you!". In addition to meaning "ambiguous" Emaemaeho sounds a lot like Mamamoo AND a word for moustache, hence the finger moustache. The gesture survives as part of their greeting to this day
Ahhh you'll enjoy that show with Gfriends. The innocent Gfriend and the chaotic Mamamoo. 🤣 i binged watched that during the 1st lockdown. Piano Man is always my fave during that era.
Enjoyed your reactions so much! Watching you go on your Mamamoo journey is enough reason to subscribe! Definitely looking forward to more Mamamoo content. As a fan, it's such a joy to watch other fall in love with your group! They are definitely very special and unique from the typical kpop girl groups. Maybe you can also check out Purple Hawke Introducing Mamamoo guide (Part 1 & 2) to really get to know the members more behind the music as you go on this journey. Thanks again for your reaction!
I think as MOOMOOS we can all agree that the Purple Hawke reaction Parts 1&2 MUST be done. Not yet though. I think they should at least surpass Yes I Am before reacting to it. Might be too many spoilers. I am so ready. Moomoos to ensure this actually happens, we have to be sure to mention it here and there. And when the time is right .... we have to litter the comments with PURPLE HAWK REQUESTS HERE WE GO MOOS!!
Thanks for checking out the amazing mamamoo! Your commentary is relatable and fun to listen to, I am so happy you're joining the journey on the mamamoo train !! I hope you have fun and that moomoos are as welcoming as our girls are amazing, please check out the guide by purple hawke!
Read some of the comments but not all, so if this got answered already, sorry. The part where the lady comes in and starts talking to them was a secret cam prank on Mamamoo. The lady is well known in KPop (owns her own company, but don't know is she did at the time of recording). You should watch it with the english subs. She critics them about looking at the floor, lip syncing, and other things. When they find out it's a prank is when the director asks Solar if she thinks Baek Z Young is a good actress. The reaction and stress crying are real as Mz Baek is a well known Sunbae (person in higher position in your job)
You need to react to Mamamoo commercials ads songs that sound like their comoasong not gonna lie it was too good to be a commercial songs like their commercial song charting high in korea. 1. WooHoo 2. Gleam 3. Wanna Be Myself
omg thankyou so much for this reaction! i recommend you to watch killing voice☺ also don't forget to turn on the subs since they're singing and talking too. thankyouu!!
Loved this!! can't wait to follow your journey of discovering mamamoo! Y'all should react to 'Introducing MAMAMOO' by purple hawke! you will not regret it :D
Yep, it was totally a prank on their debut MV. The woman was a famous Korean singer, who came to see them because (she claimed) her friend, Mamamoo's boss, was praising them a lot. Now imagine yourself in their shoes: you're shooting your first MV, and the equivalent of Celine Dion shows up and says "You have no presence, you're staring at the floor, why are you singing to a backing track, I didn't come to see you lipsync, he told me you're really good but it's really disappointing..." The boss then asks "Miss Solar, Ms Baek is quite the actress, isn't she?" and then she breaks into giggles and tries to comfort the girls "I'm so sorry, I'm really not that kind of person..." :D Who else pranks their group on their first MV and _leaves it in in the MV_ :D

🤣🤣🤣 omg based on that alone i just know we're gonna love their shows!
A little fun fact about them when they were rookies: they all made their own choreographies up until GogoBebe era in 2019 😊
much of their earlier stuff was pretty retro, with anything from a '20s to a '70s feel, and a lot of that was actually due to esna, who was one of their labelmates and also co-wrote or co-composed many of their songs. in fact, several of these songs were originally created by esna for herself (one of their predebut songs/mvs, "don't be happy" with bumkey was one of those. the other predebut song/mv, "peppermint chocolate" featured k.will). esna is an american singer/songwriter who joined rbw when she moved to korea
