    My friction is perfectionism

You are not perfect and never will be. Me too. Everyone else. Its a stupid stupid idea, that i suffer from too. I deal with it by not caring much if its not perfect. "Its not perfect" i dont care, its art, not perfect, just like us all.

Think about this exact same video: theres a typo near the end, but its still a "perfectly" good video. Still works, and is helping me. I hope you overcome the fear of not beeing perfect!

@@brunopereiralima8785 Perfectionism is not about being perfect. Its about never finding satisfaction in the things you create to the level you want them to be.
By comparing your work with other great composers for example.
We all have this issue, the only way out is to ignore all this "I am not sure i like this" by MASS producing / writing.
Its the only way to get to a great level.

Same, gotta stop rewriting the same 8 bars and write 8 more, forward momentum.

Perfect is the enemy of good, and the mortal enemy of done.

One thing that helps me sometimes is starting the DAW right away. Even if I'm not planning to work. Just having the project already open is enough to entice me to work on it. Loading times are unfortunately too long. My current dread are long autosaves. Really takes you out of the flow, and it's easy to alt tab to the internet.

Same, this is the reason why I'm considering Vienna Ensemble Pro. But it adds one more layer of complexity and I don't want to spend a million hours setting it up to regret it after a couple of times of using it

Writing the contrasting secondary theme, the midway point is always the most difficult if you are into ABA form, but the idea of trying anything in terms of chords or key signature rather than being too cerebral about it is very freeing. One thing i tried was taking an existing piece of music i like and then just copy it and replace the melody with my own. It can help show you how pieces can develop and how you might write the accompaniment as a sirt of template.

Biggest friction in my setup right now: having to move and plug in my keyboard every time before creating… The plans for a new desk that can fit my keyboard are already made, so fingers crossed this friction will be removed soon ;)
Thanks for the video and another reminder to take these small obstructions seriously (while not using them as an excuse to overthink)

I would strongly suggest reading the book "The War of Art" by Steven Pressman, which provides an interesting insight into the subject of this post.

I ditto that one! Amazing read, and put The Music Lesson by Victor Wooten on that same list.

Turning pro I would recommend as well it compliments the war of art very well. His take on being a professional should be heard by everyone.

Getting the template file for all the small details adds to minutes. Just setting the markers to measure 1 or before is a huge time saver. This is another great video. Thank you!

Wow! Everyone producing music in one way or other should view this. Mind blowing! Thank you!
I wrote down a personal summary of the video, so I can review it.

Sit down with a (reasonable) goal and get up when the goal is done. Sometimes wanting to get off the rig will make me get to the finish line. lol

Every time I compose it feels like "No this is not what I want" which makes me doubt what i am missing and i can't move forward.

I always chose keys that I subjectively thought fit what I wanted. For example, E major is the brightest key, A major is melancholic, etc.

Extremely disappointed to see you pushing AI slop, Ryan. I've been enjoying your videos immensely, but this kind of abject disregard for artists and art in general ought to be beneath you. For shame.
