  • We'll tell you how to check your car's battery using a multimeter, this way you will know in advance when your battery is reaching its last days and you can prepare to buy a new one, the multimeter is very cheap, whether you just want to check the battery occasionally to see what voltage it has and prevent future problems when traveling or have the battery light on your dashboard or cluster and you want to know what it is, here we will tell you.

Why is it important to check the battery with a multimeter from time to time?
Sometimes we forget that cars use batteries and we often forget about them, although there is no rule that tells us how often we should check the battery, doing it often will give us peace of mind knowing that we will not run out of charge while we are out of our house or when we go on vacation with the family.
You will know that it is time to buy a new battery when you notice this:
The car has a weak start and it takes time to start.
Many clicks are heard when trying to start the car.
Sometimes the battery may present some swelling, although it is very rare to happen.
The battery light on your dashboard or cluster has turned on.
The multimeter is one of those things that help us to check many things around the house, and the battery of our car is no exception, we can find out if it is failing or if it is something else.
Although many cars of recent model come equipped with voltage meter inside the cabin, sometimes we do not know what is the correct voltage that the battery should have, which we will tell you in this video, or simply the battery loses all its charge and we do not have another option but to open the hood of our car and check the battery manually, this is where the multimeter comes in handy.
Before doing the charge test it is recommended to turn on the headlights of our car for a couple of minutes.
The capacity of the batteries can vary from one car to another, but selecting 20 DCV in our multimeter works perfectly in most cars.
(The following steps are described graphically in this video)
    Step 1
After about 2 minutes we turn off the headlights of our car
    Step 2
Connect the black wire of the multimeter to the negative pole of the battery and the red wire to the positive pole.
    Step 3
We look at the voltage that the multimeter gives us, a normal reading is 12.6 Volts or a little bit more, if you have less than that the alternator is not charging the battery like it should.
    Step 4
We are going to do the cold-cranking test (CCA) connect the multimeter cables in the same way as in the previous step and start the car, ask someone else to turn it on for you, so that you can see the voltage on the multimeter, when starting the car the voltage should not drop more than 10 volts, if it does, your battery is no longer useful, it is garbage and you must buy a new battery.
If it did not go below 10 volts, it should immediately raise above 14 volts, if it does not go up to 14 volts, you might have a problem with your alternator.
    Step 5
With the car still on and the multimeter connected to the battery, no matter what voltage you are getting, turn on the headlights, your stereo, and your air conditioner to test your alternator, the voltage should not go down more than 13 volts.
With this we finish the test, so you will know if your battery is already trash and you need to replace it or if the problem is your alternator.
What are the factors that shorten the life of batteries in cars?
It all depends on the weather and our driving habits.
Trips of less than 20 minutes do not help extend their life since 20 minutes is not enough to fully charge the battery.

    • @wildcatgarage395
      @wildcatgarage395  2 года назад
