I installed my Rheem “12” seer in January “2000” My outdoor unit sits on a concrete pad. No dog pissing on it Every January I ask myself should I replace my equipment this winter ??? I’m an HVAC/R mechanic so I would be replacing it. I just replaced the service valves beginning of May the original valves were the type with the snap rings. Cut out the factory drier from the inside of the condensing unit put it on the outside 2 new service valves pressurized with nitrogen let it sit for 3 days cleaned condenser with Nubrite changed the contactor and capacitor evacuated dialed in a precision charge with R-22. This is now the “25th” cooling season🧐🤔 Do I gamble for another season ?? Do I go for “30” years ??? When will the Fornication corrosion kill my unit ??? A lot of the information on the Fornication corrosion points to the eventual leaks being on the Evaporator 😵‍💫😵‍💫

In certain types of houses, you can put in a large down-facing ceiling-mounted exhaust fan, that transfers outside air through the lower floor windows, and forces exhaust air out the upper story attic vents. Or: would a swamp cooler work in that area of summer climate? Seems like maybe a pair of mini-split systems would be less expensive. Maybe the home owner could handle a DIY install, if the mini-split comes factory charged with Freon.

Mikey you keep it real so i will. Im not sure if its just the way i grew up or my fiancial situation, but ive always dealt with a/c window units
Figure $350 a pce every 5 to 10 years and ya my lightbill is like $30 per month per unit as opposed to say 20k for a unit at what like $500 a yr for maintenance service😅
Keep in mind your pricing and fees for your market seem to be comparable and just what they are your service seems though dose make value of cost a worthy investment 👌

I also grew up with window, AC units and a whole house attic exhaust fan that once the sun went down, my parents would open all the windows in the house because they were closed all day and then let all of that cooler air outside gets sucked into the house and up to the attic and out

30 lb cans of R-22 are $800. That's $27/lb. You have the gauges hooked up, and the system wasn't empty.... juice it up for them. My friend filled his R-22 with 6 lbs last year and it's still working today... BTW, his guy added NU-22 (dark blue can) which was like $150 for the whole can and charged like $120/lb. Stupid markup and shouldn't be mixed.

The closest i made it was making package units for trane in lynn haven fl. Ive done about every part of assembly and even troubleshooting units in the factory that were not passing internal run testing. I just never got into the trade where theres money to be made. Prices are much higher in NY. Union contractors. Also, his work and quality of installation are well worth it. You get what you pay for. Want a shitty unit that’s going to have issues in 6-7 years. Go with the cheap bid. His units will be running trouble free for 10-15 years or more.

I, also pay $800 for a 30lb tank of R22. I charge $175 a pound plus the Easyseal. A $2000 dollar repair and leak search, but it very likely could be in the shraeder cores and caps. If it is the coil, just replace the coil and and move on. Odds are that you did them a solid, they will give you the change-out when they can afford it or get financed. Either way, it probably gets them through the summer and they can save some money for the replacement unit. I own my company here in Colorado and get that people can't drop 12k-15k. No reason to get into the name calling. Two pretty good pay days to get it running and possible replacing the coil on the second trip. Both of you win. Down the road, you get the full change-out because you got them through the hot season. Just a thought.
