Raising back of my Monster WHOLE INCH: new shock, sprockets, tire, chain - Dirty Billy Ducati v1198

- This is NOT a how to video. I know people have asked me to film the work but I really really just wanted to zone in and get it done. Focus on the task, the fix, the repair. The love. The art and zen of motorcycle maintenance. New used shock off a Monster S2R 1000, as well as a new tirerod from 749/999 (part number 87520731A) which raised the back of the bike about 1.5 inches, the old rear sprocket was eaten up and so was the chain - the tire had to go so I threw on a crispy new Bridgestone Battlax T31 - my fave touring tires. A perfect peaceful sunday to just zone out and work on the bike a bit. Dirty Billy is the perfect spot for that.

The Feeling riding the bike with all the new parts is priceless and the satisfaction you get on working on your own bike is something else.
Why did the rear sprocket have such an uneven wear 🤔
Can't wait for the next vlog.
The bike runs like BUTTER. SMOOOOOOOTH. and yea, that wear was nuts.
Might be a misaligned rear wheel.
importantandcorrect spare parts for the legendary monster desmo .....Exellent bro...
Crusial! Gotta do it right!
this makes me wanna quit my job and open a community garage too
Ha! Me too!
Excellent my fellow Ducati bro. Nothing like working on ya machine and the satisfaction when you do it. Great idea having access to a shop like that. Enjoy !
yea the shop is spot on, nice and chill. just wish i had more skills.
I like garages like this, where you can do all your own maintenance.
You really take care of your Monster. She must run perfect.
She runs pretty good but far from perfect and yes, the garage is dope.
Good stuff, it’s satisfying working on your own bike. I’m sure she rides peachy now. Just in time for summer!
Yea she is snappy. Still some work to be done but its getting there. Most def satisfying.
what a cool place. Looking forward to your first vlog on it
She rips. And the place is heaven.
God damn cool to have a place like this to make a maintaince
Yea its a blessing for sure. I do not take it for granted.
Ah, wish i had access to such a garage....:(
Yea, its a straight up blessing.
I just got all my parts for a front end overhaul, springs to match my weight, new oil, new seals, new bushings. Can't tell you how gassed I am to finally have the front end sorted.
Makes a huge difference - i feel that way about my rear - it was sloppy to say the best. Did you do all the work yourself?
Going to attempt it this weekend. I haven't done forks before, but I've done the valve adjustment and belt changes. The stock nonadjustable forks on these bikes are dead simple. Do you feel like the shock swap helped? I'm probably about 30 pounds too heavy for mine, and I saw that you can take shocks off some of the superbikes (999).
The shock swap made a HUGE difference, like, tremendous. I'm pretty sure s2r and 620's have the same shock, so i dont think it was an upgrade - however I do have a 2007 S2R 1000 adjustable fork upfront and that also made a HUGE difference as well.
Killer - love this sort of vlog actually; I'd have loved to see the work (timelapse even?) but totally understand where you are coming from. Really looking forward to your opinion/impression on how the upgrades/maintenance worked out!
Timelapse! Of course. Spaced out on that. Could have easily set that up. I gotta start showing my face and then alot of things will be easier.
Thats a nice community garage u got there!
yea Dirty Billy is THE spot.
Good video. More videos like that...I know you getting close to 50k miles!
49k indeed :)
Hi my friend, your garage 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Hi brother - yep yep - I love that garage :)
That’s gonna be me soon twin! I have that pile of parts which includes tires, chains, sprockets etc. The only thing I’m missing which I’m debating on buying or not is the suspension. Why did you end up changing the suspension? Did it make a huge difference? What about the forks suspension? Did that help?
The front stock suspension on the 620 is PURE TRASH. Its not adjustable and was bouncy and sloppy at best. I replaced it with S2R 1000 fully adjustable suspension, front and back. HUGE difference. Can't even compare the two.
hahahaha when i saw the sprocket i said holy s!#$ and then you said it.
yea man, that sprocket was the worst i've seen - i can never get my sprocket to that level AGAIN.
Question? So by changing the TIE ROD you can raise or lower the seat height of the bike. Am I correct in assuming that if you lower the seat height, the distance to the foot pegs decreases. If you raise the seat height by getting a taller tie rod, the distance from the seat to the foot pegs increases. Is that correct? Thanks
No, the distance to foot pegs does not change because the foot control assembly is connected to the frame - what changes is distance from seat to the swingarm.
That old rear sprocket has some crazy uneven wear. Seems like the chain was too tight or too heavy for it. We only have one place like dirty Billy's out here in LA. It's called Moto Republic. It's pretty awesome. We use to have another shop in downtown LA but they went under last year.
Yea, that sprocket was wild. Going steel next one. I'm surprised there arent a dozen shops like that, there is a bunch in nyc.
The rearsprocket was terrible looking indeed! :D
Ahhhh cmon... minimal showing on the work. And you didn’t do the valves. Now you gotta come back, and take it all apart again. Smh
Ha. Well, this is not a how to and i stated my reasons - besides i'm NOT touching my valves, going to let a pro do it. I dont have enough skills for that, nor do i want my bike down for more than a day.
Ducati NYC Vlog lol.. eventually she’s just gonna stop running and scream at you to do the adjustments. That’ll be when quarantine is over, and everyone, Tom, Dick, and Sally are gonna lineup to have work done. Wait times will be atrocious.
👌
:)
Hey, just got a monstr 620, and i am looking in to this raising the rear end as im little bit tall, what is your feedback on it can you explain how does it feel riding it afterwards, do you know exactly how taller it is?
Its about an inch taller, i've done it for years now. Its a bit more agressive now since you are leaning forward a bit more over the bars but I enjoy the perky rear.
I'm always surprised at how much gunk is under my chain sprocket cover.
Always a fun time scooping out that crevice.
Very dope man! Love the shoes! I’m 5’8 & 170 pounds. do you think I could put two feet down on the Ducati monster? And do you think it’s too big for someone like me?
100% u can put both feet down and its perfext for your size and weight. Spot on
Monster S2R 1000 shocks, and a tirerod from what?! which model model tirerod is that? :) Im going to do same mods! Thank you!
Tierod is off of a 749/999 - part number 87520731A :)
Didn't you notice anything with that kind of rear sprocket? What was the mileage on that sprocket?
Oh I def noticed alot. I've adjusted and cleaned the chain - i should have seen the damage, but i'm an idiot, and it was cold :) Not sure, its from Aug 2018 and I ride a ton.
Hey what was going on that you decided to change shock?
It kept bottoming out and just felt sloppy all around. Plus 50k miles were not kind to its looks, it just looked and felt worn
It's been a few months now. How are you liking the rear suspension from the S2R 1000? Is the higher ride height to your liking? how did it change the bike's geometry for you?
I love the higher height - one of the reasons I did the swap. The ride is a bit more aggressive across the board and some of your weight is shifted forward but thats what I like - as is the bike was a bit too low for my taste. Id say if you're considering this - do it.
@@ducatinyc thanks! I ordered a rear shock and adjustable tie rod from a S2R1000. Let's see. Your front forks are from a S2R1000? Where did you get the work done? What would you recommend? I'm in Brooklyn too
@@ricklin5341 Yep, fork is a S2R1000. I did all the work myself. To get someone else to do it you could hit up BK Moto.
I raised the height, my M620 is a totally different animal. Thanks for the advice. My kickstand is feeling really short now, did you have to replace your kickstand? What did you use?
@@ricklin5341 I use a rock under it - everytime I park i run around and find a rock :)
Have yoiu ever thought about going to a 14T sproket?
Not really, that would bring down the top speed. Thought about it a few times tho.

ha! its missing!
