Though I understand the nuance, it's not necessarily because of the how they presume living conditions would be. It could be considered an exile because of the distance from China. Since they are from rich families, sending them to Africa actually means they will not provide support and he has lost all chance of control.

It's annoying & frustrating how the writers wrote the FL as gullible. This to the point where she keeps allowing herself to be setup just because she was attempting to get back her mother's possessions. The family is not going to give it back to you willingly 😊.
