You pretty much got it - simple hype song. There are a couple wrinkles though. First, the lyrics are mostly various wordplays on the number 4, which is supersitiously associated with death in Japan (and I think China?) due to its pronunciation; this song is all about how '4' is actually good and not unlucky at all. Second, this is the only song with any actual BM members credited for any part of the songwriting - 'BLACK BABYMETAL', for lyrics and music. The story goes that Su was challenging Yui and Moa to come up with songs on various topics in the tour bus during their first time abroad (Singapore 2012 I think), and this one was so infectious that it got stuck in everyone's heads and Koba eventually agreed to include it on the album (after a little arranging) when they wouldn't stop singing it.
A song , for me , that is not open for analysis. It's just pure fun and entertainment. The band , the girls , the dancers and the crowd all enjoyed themselves. I've never seen children have such control over a crowd. And that's what many reactors tend to forget sometimes. They're just kids. Great reaction. Subscribed. 🦊🦊💥🦊🦊
_Yon Yon!_ MoiMoi coming back with their own exclusive song and kawaii explosion 🤗 4 No Uta (or "Song 4") is another Black Babymetal song and is a challenge to our girls and giving another social reform message, this time trying to stop with the superstition around the number 4. "4" got two ways of pronounce in Japanese, _shi_ is the right way, but that word is also similar to "die", that's why they use _yon,_ the other way, 4 or "shi" is associated with bad luck, similar to number 13 for some westerners. Our girls here are trying to teaching us in a funny song and choreo that the _shi_ isn't always related to bad things. Always love that reggae breakdown reaction, unexpected, especially over that Metallica - Master Of Puppets riffs, so cool. Oh btw this song got the credits over YuiMetal and MoaMetal, so this is the only song with them on the credits, the funny story is while traveling on the bus at live tour in Singapore, SuMetal challenge the girls to do a song with this theme, they were singing this all the time that even the stuff members got stuck with that in their head, the rest is story, is a super engaging song with great crowd participation and who don't wanna do that with our lovely girls back then? This also got a MoaMetal solo version live at Legend S 2017, you already know why, right? I'm not gonna give so much spoilers on this live at Budokan 2014 since you're gonna watch this soon apparently, so get ready for a wonderful experience. Finally, you're very much welcome to celebrate unofficially Yon Yon Day (April 4) every year after official Fox Day (April 1). Yon Yon! See you next time and kitsune up 🦊🤘🔥
Great reaction. Yui and Moa have full writing credits (lyrics and music - not the arrangement) for this song. They wrote it on the tour bus in Singapore - Su gave them the subject 4. She also gave them subjects of wood and banana to write songs about - we have never heard those songs. It seems they annoyed the staff so much running round singing their new song that the staff complained to Kobametal ... he then had the arrangement written and the first Black BABYMETAL song was born. Considering they wrote this when they were 12 there is a lot of clever word play in the song. There are two counting systems in Japan, in one 4 is yon, in the other 4 is shi. Shi also means death or to die, so the number 4 is considered unlucky and is avoided and shunned (probably even more so than 13 in the west). So apart from the bits getting everybody to shout "Yon Yon" with them, what they were doing was listing lots of other words that also have 'shi' in them (eg bitaminshi = vitamin C) and saying, they don't mean 'to die' so neither does shi as 4, it is all silly superstition. As you noticed, the choreo is clever too - not only were they holding up 4 fingers, a lot of their poses (eg standing with one leg crossed over the other) signify 4 and even the bits holding their finger to their lips like they would be saying "shhh" - in Japan that would also be "shi". So glad you noticed the "boing" as well, most people seem not to hear that at all. The extra dancers on stage are known as Sister Bones.
Written by Yui and Moa after a challenge by Su-. Two number systems in Japan and four can be ”yon” or "shi" but the word shi is also associated with death. Thus, 4 in Japan is much like 13 in the West. I'm sure others will provide more detail.
When they're running from corner to corner, it hits me that these two adorable little girls are doing this in Budokan, the most prestigious arena in Japan and a venue I grew up hearing about as legendary. I couldn't be happier for Su, Moa, and Yui for all they've experienced, and even if we don't see Yui again professionally (seriously, did she get sent to Mars!?) she's still had an incredible career. I decided that one of my gifts to my wife this year for her birthday is going to be Babymetal's show from the Tokyo Dome. My favorite of the Japanese bands typically depends on which one I listened to last - LOVEBITES, BAND-MAID, Babymetal, or Wagakki Band - but for her, it's definitely Babymetal. I can't wait for you to hear "Tales of the Destinies" from that show . . . which is your only option since that's the only time that it's been performed.
It is crazy that those young girls got to perform there at such a young age, and PACKED the place! That's awesome with the Tokyo Dome show! I have that on my radar as well. Like you, I can't wait to get to Tales and The One. Getting ready to move into that phase of my journey!
Nice reaction, thanks! They even do the number 4 with their legs 😁 According to the girls, Black BABYMETAL's purpose is to build a better society. And this time they do it by taking down superstition. As the number 4 is notoriously considered a bad number in Asia. They cleverly associate it with positive words which contains the same "shi" sound like happiness, delicious, joy, vitamin C or social reform. Another way to say the number 4 is "yon" so the tittle of the song (Yon no uta") and the "Yon Yon!" chant all over the place. 🤣 This is the only song written by the girls. They have full credits on this one for the lyrics and music as Black BABYMETAL while the arrangements are by Tatsuo and Kobametal himself. Imagine you are 14 and you are performing your own song at the Budokan (one of the most important venues in Japan) in front of 10K of your fans all chanting "Yon Yon!". It's crazy! This is why this crowd interaction is so important.
You know I heard that when they wrote this song while on tour ,Moa and Yui sang it repeatedly to the point that hotel staff complained to management .. How funny
The number '4' is considered unlucky in Japan. 'Yon-Yon'! (Yon=4). The girls came up with the lyrics themselves while riding in the back of the tourbus. The band liked it so much they turned it into a song.
Not many notice that Yui has a wardrobe malfunction just before the first reggae breakdown: her left boot strap comes undone and, during the series of bows just before the reggae break, she takes that opportunity to secure the strap and, not missing a beat, gets back to the performance. Talk about thinking on the run! 🦊🤘
Wow! That'd be 2 wardrobe malfunctions I've seen her deal with w/o anyone hardly noticing. It's overall a good thing if she managed take care of the issue w/o it being noticed too much! Thanks!
The girls said that when they were young they had a lot of trouble finding boots that fit since they were so little (I almost said small, but they definitely were not small) they quite often used to fly off
You can check the Wembley version of song 4. At Wembley they call and respond in English. And you'll find when the girls jump up and the music changes and then sing yon yon yon yon yon yon.. the drummer is singing yon yon yon yon yon yon as the crowd waving along. 😀😁😂♥️🦊
💀 💕 / 4⃣ Official song credits: Lyrics: BLACK BABYMETAL (Yui and Moa!!!) / Music: BLACK BABYMETAL / Arr.: tatsuo, KxBxMETAL I don't know how the Japanese music industry is set up, but I like the idea that Yui and Moa get royalties whenever this song is broadcast, etc. Once again, the meaning is in the song title. It is pronounced like death (shi, like when in anime they say, shine!), so it is a bit like a tabu, even some hotels do not have floor 4. So Yui and Moa made this song with the cursed number telling us that in fact 4 is a good thing, and they enumerate all the good things that have number 4 (like bitamin no shi; literally vitamin C) 😁 It is the only song in the Babymetal catalogue where the girls are credited, Yon no Uta was written by Black Babymetal while traveling with the tour bus.
Awesome! I guess I kind of knew that the #4 was a bad number in those cultures, but it totally slipped my mind and didn't make the connection. Thanks so much!
🤣🤣🤣 Nobody expects the Reggae in the middle of a metal breakdown, but its written in so well, that it doesn't seem completely out of place....And watchign them running around the stage working the crowd.... Seriously, grown ass bands can't pull it off as well these two girls can. Black Babymetal is just fun. 🤘🦊🤘
So the word for the number four can be expressed in two different ways, as "yon" and as "shi"; the shi version is commonly associated with death, as it is contained in words such as "shinu" "死ぬ" which means "to die" So the number four has this negative connotation. So this song is all about them saying four is actually a good number, with all the positive associations "yon" has. There's actually a funny part in the song where they are running through the word associations and accidentally say "shi" for one of them, and they make a cute "oops" face. Word association games are a HUGE pasttime of kids in Japan.
Jake and Grington have already explained all the details, so no need to repeat all that. I agree that this is a fun one especially with the choreography incorporating all sorts of number four. Props to Yui and Moa for coming up with the song themselves when they were just 12. Kitsune up!

By far one of their most playful videos... Is it possible to die from cuteness overload?
If it is, they'd be the cause for sure!
