    I miss this car, this was my family car growing up, and we went on road trips everywhere on this thing. My cousins and I used to always sleep in the cargo area during trips (yeah not safe nowadays lol). One time, we were crossing the border of Canada, I was sleeping in the back of the cargo area with my sister. That resulted in us getting detained because my parents looked like they were smuggling us, haha. Many good memories.

      Good Luck on your search for a Trooper. I originally wanted The Trooper II because of its rugged off-road shape. My experience with the first generation Isuzu Trooper was in Ecuador. They beat the heck out of these vehicles and the Trooper kept running. But by the time I decided to buy, Isuzu came out with more modern redesign in 1993.

    I've owned 3, having just bought my 3rd at 200K miles as a winter car for our son. These cars, when cared for, age remarkably well. This one was bought new by a friend of mine and he really liked it, only replacing it when it was well over 150k, even then he couldn't part with and has kept it until I asked him about it. My 2nd, an '02 Trooper went to my father-in-law and it outlived him, still pulling docks and launching boat up on the Canadian border. They were clearly killed by a powerful entity, clearly powerful enough to corrupt Consumer Reports. GM bought the corpus of Isuzu, ostensibly for the rights to the DuraMax diesel. I intend to keep this one for quite a while.

      Thank you for your comments on the Trooper. This year my 1993 will turn 28 years. It is like my family member and I actually prefer it over my 2016 Wrangler. Time and again I have made a deal with it (yes, I talk to my Trooper) that if it has any major breakdown, it is off to the junk yard. It must have worked, because it is still going strong as my daily driver. Just think, an SUV that is 28 years old and (knock on wood) has the same transmission and drive train. Electronics still work, and each year it passes the state smog check. After so many years I know every sound it makes, and every blind spot. So I feel safer using the Trooper. The exterior is a bit worn, but that deters thieves, who assume that there would be nothing of value inside.

    Have a 1998 that I bought new. Has 308,000 miles, the original clutch, original brake shoes, and just changed the original muffler last year. Do my own oil changes, spark plugs, grease jobs, and filters/belts. AC works, radio works, and put in the CD player myself a long time ago. Bought tires at Costco so they do the rotations. Live in Reno, NV do light off road travel. I'm keeping mine. Did not believe the CR articles at the time. Got a good deal because demand for these were quite low back then. Luckily, no accidents, just windshield replacements. So that's 22 years of garage parking too.

    • @H.pylori
      @H.pylori  4 года назад +1

      I am not as resourceful as you, and have to depend on the capabilities of Mom and Pop repair shops. I was about to donate mine to charity and get a used 4Runner, but found a good shop that only does Japanese cars and they fixed, lubed, plugs, belts...many things were repaired that the other shops neglected. Now I plan to keep the Trooper. It has so much cargo space with the rear seats folded forward. Great for camping. I just fold the back of the passenger seat down and place a 5/8 inch plywood board over the seat back and extend it to the folded front passenger seat. The end of the board at the rear door has two legs cut to the height of the folded seat and have a sleeping platform that is long enough to stretch out flat on my back with inches to spare. I am 5'9". Then I can stow gear under the platform and still have plenty of space on the driver side for the rest of the camping gear. Everything still works except the windshield washer fluid reservoir, the plastic became brittle and cracked a few years ago in this Nevada heat, and it was not worth the cost to undo the belts and hoses to get to it. Motor pumps still work. Just carry RAIN-X and paper towels.
      I just learned on another youtuve video that the Trooper is pre-drilled for a roof cargo basket. Three sets of holes on each side under the black strips that run along the sides of the roof. For 26 years I thought the black strips were joint sealants to keep water out. Again, a really well done SUV that got a bad rap. Thanks for sharing.

But I love it so much I just can't get myself to sell it. It now has about 179k miles on it and it runs ok. The only thing I have replaced is the alternator, tires and some miscellaneous pollution control parts.

      Do not hold your breath in the U.S. Mine is still running well at 28 years (1993) and embarrassingly I must admit that I have only done minimal maintenance. It is my "get around town" car. Exterior looks bad, bunch of dirty horse equipment in the rear with seats folded up. Trash on front seat. No worry about theft or break in, since who would want to do that when there is a Mercedes or Lexus nearby. My mechanic says I have at least another 100,000 mile to go, which would put me close to 280,000 miles. Have been on rough BLM roads without problems.

      Hi, I have not noticed any burning of oil in mine (as far as I can tell). I have not had to add any oil between servicing, which is about every 6-8 months. I do not abuse my Trooper as you can tell with only 125,000 miles over 28 years. If yours is a 1990, it must have been a Trooper II, so things might have been improved by 1993. As stated in my videos, my vehicle has metal skid plates covering transmission, engine, and gas tank. And it is the low end Trooper S. The only leaks that I have had and were repaired was the radiator, power steering reservoir, and one that I can't find near the engine. Every time I look at "Old Faithful" I see a 4Runner in my future as a replacement. But as long as the Trooper runs, I will keep it.

    It is just staggering to see that what Isuzu does now is manufacturing pick-up lorries (the D-MAX) and SUVs based on the D-MAX platform (called 'MU X'). Sad to see what they have become what they are today. They used to be so great and interesting.

Has pre-drilled holes for a roof rack/rails. 30 years...same transmission and almost all original parts. This with 127,000 miles.

    I have a '99 trooper that has needed more work to keep going then yours, and I've noticed other Troopers around '93 being more reliable and simpler built. I still like mine however, and have put it through a lot of off-roading.
