  • One of the most shocking moments in American History saw President Abraham Lincoln assassinated inside of Fords Theatre by John Wilkes Booth. But the plot was bigger to bring down the government, and one man involved was George Atzerodt. He was tasked with taking out the Vice President Andrew Johnson, but instead of doing this he bottled it and could not go through with the plot. But he was still executed for his crimes alongside Mary Surratt, David Herold and Lewis Powell.

      You are 100% Correct! I believe Freed Slaves would have fared MUCH better and ultimately our nation would not have suffered from so much racial division!

      I don't think anyone can really answer that. As a European with Belgian roots, I always thought: "what if Napoleon had won Waterloo and could establish himself as ruler all over again"? Well, then history would indeed have been different from 1815 onwards. Something that is now called Belgium would not exist and probably be part of France. Also many other things would have been completely different. However, you never know how things would have turned out and the question remains whether it would have been better or worse. Nobody knows ...

      @@E-s.thoughts If you read American history you will see what I'm talking about. Lincoln's plans for reconstruction post war were completely different from VP Andrew Johnson's. This created issues that radically affected the nation and caused much upheaval that would not have happened under Lincoln's guidance.

      @@E-s.thoughts Oh..things WOULD have been better in the US! Lincoln was assassinated AFTER the US Civil Was ended and the question was WHYY KILL HIM NOW?? THE WAR WAS OVER! The victors of the war was the NORTH..and they Northern leaders were ENRAGED that Lincoln was assassinated AFTER Hostilities ended. Lincoln was going to treat the South with Benevolence to help heal the wounds the war created, but after his MURDER the North, which held ALL the POWER PUNISHED the South in ways that left the South in relative poverty compared to the North. That created MANY DECADES of animosity in the South that the Southerners took out on the Freed Slaves. The creation of the KKK was the result of that. All that lead to atrocities and racial divisions that exist to this day. You are WRONG saying "Nobody Knows" if things would be much better in the US had Lincoln lived. The US would have "healed" from that war MUCH FASTER had Lincoln lived..NO doubt about it!

      @@marcomalo02Actually I was just replying to your statement; "then we would live in a better country today" ... well, no one knows because there are so many circumstances that can push the whole thing in a different direction and even make it worse.

    Calling him a coward because he didn’t participate in the plot sounds plain wrong.

    • @E-s.thoughts
      @E-s.thoughts 3 месяца назад +3

      Well, he did participate in the plot, but he ended up getting drunk because he was too afraid to kill Johnson. If he had openly said that he did not want to participate in those murders, you could even call him a hero, but in this case there are not many words left to describe him.

    George Atzerodt was ultimately buried in an unmarked grave at Glenwood Cemetery in Washington D.C. His brother John claimed his body and took his brother remains to Prospect Hill. A German American cemetery next door (if you will) but he was denied being interred there. Glenwood would take the body under the terms of George being buried in an unmarked grave to deter visitors.

    English civil war?!

  • @epierotti
    @epierotti 3 месяца назад +5

    The text for this video is very carelessly written.
    First: As the previous commenter observed, the "English" Civil War took place between 1642 and 1651 in, of all places, ENGLAND.
    Second: The large gallows was not built so that the conspirators could all be "condemned" at once. The conspirators were all condemned to die on the gallows. This occurred in the courtroom and was ordered by the judge.
    Third: The man who shot Lincoln was named John Wilkes Booth. First name - John. Middle name: Wilkes, after distant relative, John Wilkes, a radical ENGLISH politician. Last name: Booth. Just like the rest of his family.
    To refer to him as if his last name was a hyphenated "Wilkes-Booth" is just plain ignorant.
    Fourth: "The noose was placed around their necks."
    Just one noose?
    Fifth: "The trapdoors then crashed open, with them having been shuffled over them." What does this even mean? The scaffold was constructed so that the front portion was hinged and could swing down freely upon the release of the triggering mechanism. There was only ONE trapdoor The rear part of the platform was stationary and an integral part of the scaffold. The ALREADY CONDEMNED were made to climb the steps which led to the fixed portion of the platform, upon which also stood the executioners, various officials and the minister, who administered the last rites.
    The ALREADY CONDEMNED were made to stand on the front, free-swinging part of the platform, where INDIVIDUAL NOOSES were placed around their necks.
    I guarantee you that once the trap door was released, George Atzerodt didn't "scream" anything at that point. His final words, spoken before the big drop, were, "May we ALL meet in the other world."
    Sixth: "Uninterred" is not a word. If you are trying to say that his body was dug up, the word is "disinterred."
    Seventh: All your videos end with, "Thanks for watching... And once again, thank you so much for watching." That sounds so lame and needy.
    You can do better.

      At any point from being sentenced to death a prisoner can be referred to as condemned - the act of execution is the condemnation referred to in the sentencing, and the gallows were built for this, so you they’re not wrong.

      Sorry. But I am not wrong. You and the video poster are. You need to do some linguistic research. Start by searching for synonyms for "condemn" and execute. There is absolutely no overlap. Then study every definition of "condemn" and "execute " you can find. Educate yourself before you call out someone whose English usage on his worst day is better than your own on your best day.
      "Judge not, lest ye be judged," you semiliterate know-it-all.
