Good evening! Thank you so much for over 7,500 subscribers - to celebrate, we've got a sunny walk from one of England's greatest fishing towns of all: Grimsby, which has a lot of hidden history to offer :)
We talk much about the docks complex of Grimsby in this video, but the docks go far, far further than the Alexandra Dock which we see at the mouth of the River Freshney. As well as the Royal Dock and Fish Dock, there have been more and more docks built in the 20th century to accommodate Grimsby's car imports. As well as docks, the portside area of town is home to its own train station (Grimsby Docks), as well as the famous Freeman Street, host to its own market and formerly the High Street of the bustling industrial town.

hi i come from a fishing family in grimsby my dad was a skipper,as were a couple of my uncles, i no longer live there and really enjoyed your walk, a bit of a tear in my eye as memories came flooding back, and i really started to feel a bit homesick. i would have loved your video to have carried on to where i always thought of as grimsby docks which was off riby square, where the dock tower stands proud.as a child i remember going to meet dads boat as he came home from a fishing trip. and can vividly remember the sounds of the men busy with unloading fish , and the smells of the fish ect and it was always so nice to see your daddy again. i remember we always had to have our best clothes on to meet him lovely memories thanks

The one thousand year old Grimsby Minister and the spacious St. James Square were filmed on a beautiful day.
A calm day on England's legendary east coast ! Your films are leisurely without being ponderous, a delight for me living in Glasgow.
There is much to see on RUclips, and I am a serious reader as well, but I look forward to discovering more Let's Walk videos.

Richly deserved for all the effort you've put in, walking towns and villages that others overlook with excellent background information. Here's to the next 7500, LW !

My brother left home at 16 in about 1955 and joined the fishing fleet in Grimsby. Did that for some 20 years except for national service. Then he worked for CIBA in grimsby until he retired. He lived right next door to the Birdseye factory. Despite doing well the owners moved the work abroad and a few years later the magnificent building burnt down.

A well presented and fairly accurate account of Grimsby's history. Thank you!
However, one glaring error is that the 'Bullring' was in the Old Market Place. This was never the case though they were linked by the two narrow streets shown in your reproduced drawing - Bullring Lane to the left and Butchery Lane/Moody Lane to the right. Just check any town map to verify this.
    Regards,
    Neville

Marvellous presentation . This could well entice visitors to Grimsby ! The town tends to be overlooked with many heading to areas which have received kinder publicity. Perhaps this will help to restore the balance .

Thank you so much! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video - there are certainly some wonderful places near Grimsby (I've got a Cleethorpes video coming in the near future!), but the town really has a fantastic history, and there are great efforts ongoing to revitalise it after a tough few decades - here's hoping that continues :)

That's a nice idea! There does seem to be some great creative talent in Grimsby (the Five Guardians a great example) - and that would be a wonderful way to bring the town centre even more to life :)

Trust me the place is Grim. I live there unfortunately! If you returned to the area again, you'd be surprised at the further decline. There's scaffolding all over, along Victoria Street, more empty shops boarded up and basically let to rot. The sidewalk cafe has closed, the so called regeneration work at the Riverhead (it's where the bus station used to be years ago) is absolutely dire, dull and depressing. No way did the project cost as much as the corrupt council said it did. It also took over 2 years to get the area completed. There's now Corporation Bridge all sectioned off. It's been like that for months and each time you walk around that vicinity there's barely anyone ever working there. I actually saw a couple of work men around there a couple of months ago. I asked them when they thought the bridge would re-open and asked if it was going to be 2030. They laughed and said they had absolutely no idea. While walking around, you will see so many paths/roads being dug up and the council have had the areas sectioned off for months. The work is just being delayed continuously. That in itself speaks volumes with regards to so many councils being bankrupt right across the country. I'm wondering if there is just a little bit of surplus money that is for emergency use only. The town along with Cleethorpes, Immingham has well and truly had it's day. There's no investment even being encouraged this way, no proper employment opportunities for people either. It's so sad to see the decline because Grimsby used to be a thriving, busy little town. It's such a shame and it's so heart breaking to see along with so many homeless people too.

  • @ethanmason0382

Idk how but the town centre doesn't look half bad in this video. It was really bad during lockdown though with so many people high on spice and a drunk screaming in maccies wanting nuggets. Grimsby's not my favourite place on earth but it's definitely not the roughest place in the uk.
