I grew up in Grimsby (born in 1970) and saw first hand what the British Governments negligence did. Even today, their actions were despicable. Add to that, the actions of the Trawler owners... Not just the Grimsby fleet, but all fleets from the British Isles. The British Governments should be held accountable for their TREASON.
They had a Cod war with Iceland in the seventies and because of that Grimsby lost its fishing grounds !!! It was not the Government or any one else !!!! It was ICELAND !!!! The fishing industry became un economic !
Even for 1986, that trawler was pretty ancient. It looks like it was probably 30+ years old then and pretty impressive that it was still going. We had quite a decent sized fleet of (mostly) dutch imported beamers in Brixham around then.
Brought back some great memories and some sad ones, what a disaster from the days when the north wall would be chock a block with trawlers nose ta the wall and ships nudged in between them, the coach and horses and the Humber pubs packed hustle and bustle Freeman street packed with folk,I visited this year 50 yrs last time I was working there,it broke my heart a broken town.
Just bought the Revell trawler model, turns out the decals provided are for the Ross Jackel. So someone at Revell did some research. I will paint it up as it's last days.
Dad was a lorry driver who predominantly ran fish for trawler owners out on New Haven, and Granton. When I was a young lad, I’d spend my summers with him when the fleet would be on the west coast fishing grounds unloading in Ardrossan. We’d run the fish overnight to the markets in Grimsby and Hull. We emigrated to Canada in 65. Dad gave up driving driving and after a few years ended his working days at the local power station. It has always occurred to me that what drew me to a working life around some form of transportation was at its sunset. We got away before the collapse of UK fishing, and the shift to foreign based lorries dominating the haulage to and from the continent. Technology, and changing markets determine what the working man of yesteryears viability is going to be. Shelf life gets shorter, and your age, not your ability is your undoing. The vitality that was around the nations fishing ports will never be duplicated, the sense of community cannot be replaced by gentrification, and an Asda thrown in. It’s progress, but it was paid for by generations who worked hard for it and got little in the end.
Born in Grimsby and had my teen years in the 80s. Thanks to successive govts (Labour and Tory) there literally were next to no jobs for us. YTS was about it. The military was my escape and thank god for that cos otherwise I don't know what the hell I would've done. Absolute criminal what the govts have done to the place (and other similar towns). And yes, entry into the EU paid a massive part in its downfall.
On top of that the British government sacrificed the fishing industry in favour of the agricultural sector. The farmers got everything, including intervention, whereby they got paid not to plant crops - all the while fishermen got screwed. Furthermore in the event of a no-deal Brexit, international maritime rules will come into effect whereby trawlers from EU nations will still have a legal right to fish UK waters until an agreement can be reached. That could take years to sort out.
The Icelandic took back control. A no deal brexit would have meant quotas would make selling the catch even harder, than now post brexit. You listen to the people who are now laughing at you. Farage is happy and will never mention fish again. You are one of life's suckers.
There were a series of films on trawling and allied topics, training etc I think they were commissioned by Ross? Can't seem to find them anymore, if anyone has a link please post it.
@@nickstevenson92 If you can find someone who posts on RUclips you would be a hero. Failing that if you can get a price to convert to DVD then post again I'd consider buying a copy from you.
Hull born with family from the Boulevard,Somerset Street area, some fished others, including me went deep sea.I watched with horror and disbelief as our wonderful fishing industry was sold down the river by government neglect.I couldn`t believe what they did, giving in and allowing Iceland to impose their own rules.
I honestly had no idea that the 'Cod Wars' had actually become a shooting war! I thought that it was all totally political with a few non violent encounters between fishing boats!
big ships came back though and looking back we had NO right to fish there, NONE, Owners, particularly Marr just never maintained the ships, rusting from launching day
Now Iceland has a sustainable fisheries, imagine how they would moan if the Icelandic fisherman had came down and fished 4 miles of the coast of Lincolnshire.
Nothing to do with bad eyesight not getting into the Merchant Navy,he forgot or deliberately left out the fact he and many other Grimbos and Hully gullies were just too THICK.
Us Merchant Navy lads wouldn’t let them anywhere near our ships. The moment they let slip they were fisherman they were sent back down the gangway.Absolutely awful useless Seamen, dangerous un trained incompetent idiots. That’s why their certification is not recognised by the Merchant Navy that’s how bad they were.
The fishing industry was finished by the early eighties. So what excuses have todays youth have for being unemployed?Thick as fuck that’s what Hull and Grimsby have always been.

A whole town, a whole community, sold down the river. Well researched piece of history.

The factories closed down because it was cheaper to manufacture everything in Europe !because Britain would not change to the Euro !

celticlofts it’s very interesting to note that this all happened under a Labour government too ? I thought they supported the working class ?
According to maritime law the foreign flagged vessels will have to be permitted to fish in U.k waters

did it in the 70s and yes it was blooby hard work
I’m angry for them and it was 40 years ago!
Good Documentary, The English Government should have helped the Fishermen More.
The Fisherman's they sued and won the case in the year 2000.

No hope brexit is for the rich elite, the decline had nothing to do with the EU
Very brave men betrayed by owners,I hope they won’t be in2020.
Why it has to be cod ? why not other fish or crab shrimp ?

Yea, how dare they protect their own waters!? Much like how we should be protecting ours now, eh?
I honestly had no idea that the 'Cod Wars' had actually become a shooting war! I thought that it was all totally political with a few non violent encounters between fishing boats!
Thought it came to a head when some ships were rammed and damaged.
Much like the coal miners ?
Who voted for Tory brexit, they never learn
GRIMSBY TOWN

They are not gun boats. They are patrol Vessels.
Why didn’t The navy wipe the gun boats out
All bluff until two ships collided.

I think many were surprised how far trawlers fished, you just assume local seas.
Dispose people Tories and labour brutal wrecked country shocking ongoing
