The NBA is BROKEN...and There is NO Going Back

  • As the pace of play and criminal lack of defense continues to get worse with every passing night, this current crop of players will only continue to rewrite the record books. But if you REALLY understand what is happening in today's NBA, it will only serve as an emphatic reminder of how much BETTER the previous generation of players really are.

Kawhi and Jimmy Butler. I'll stop there cause I can't think of anyone else. None of the top offensive players even make the all defense team anymore. I went and looked it up and Paul George made the 1st team in 2018-19. AD made the 1st team in 2017-18 and 2019-20. Klay made 2nd team in 2018-19. And Embiid made a couple. Poor defense plus advances in sports medicine = guys playing into their mid 30s and putting up historic seasons. Twenty years ago both Steph Curry and Kevin Durant would've already been retired considering the injury history they have. Instead, 35 year old Kevin Durant is having arguably the best season of his career and almost 36 year old Steph Curry is having a negligible drop in production.
You don't have to play defense anymore unless you're a shot-blocking big.
Guys come into the league not knowing how to play basketball beyond street ball (words spoken by LeClown himself, by the way.)
You almost don't have to worry about career-ending injuries as long as you take care of your knees (and when you don't hustle nor react on defense it's much easier.)

While I have the UTMOST respect for Michael and he is the EASY GOAT. In terms of scoring, Kobe is MUCH closer to Jordan than the 30 to 25 career averages would indicate. The NBA's massive scoring dip really did start until 1995-96 as I highlighted in this video. You can make a case it started in 93. BUT Jordan was already 30 years old and heading into a year and a half retirement at that point. From Jordan's aged 21-29 seasons he had a 32.3 point per game average in an league where average nightly scoring was 108.9 ppg for that 9 year span. His last 6 year span of playing time--aged 31-39--he only averaged 26.5. Obviously that includes his depreciated Wizards years. BUT even looking at the second three peat seasons, he averaged 29.3. Kobe never got any span of time where scoring was easier like Jordan had in the 80s in enhance his scoring average. Not only that, Kobe didn't get to start until his third season. He had to share shots with Shaq for his first 8 years. All of this say, Kobe is neck and neck as an all time scorer. To me they are the two best scorers ever and no one belongs in their class--aside from Wilt (who is beneath Kobe and Jordan imo).

How awesome would it be seeing Luka cook most of the league despite tough defense (which, he most likely would do), but then you get a few match-ups where opp defender slows him down, locks him up...he has a bad game...has to adjust...
That is the beauty of the game, not uncontested layups...

It makes a great impression on me to see a slow, clumsy and pachydermal player like Luka Doncic score 50 points per game by penetrating the "defenses" with the calm and serenity of an old man taking a walk in a park. In the 90s he would average 10 points per game.
The NBA has become a pathetic and degrading media circus. The new generations of spectators, raised on social media and video games, only want to see spectacular acrobatics and scoreboards go haywire, and lazy players today, instead of fighting hard for a victory, prefer to earn their keep and manage their image like catwalk models.

No defense league doesn't really impresses me as a fan. I love games where teams struggle to score over 100 points let alone 90 plus points. Old school real defenses forced players back then to practice and improve their fundamental skills just in order to thrive in a defense oriented league.
Today's players don't like putting forth the effort on defense because the league itself banned it. No wonder why floppers take advantage of ticky tack fouls to the detriment of general interest in the sport of basketball. No wonder why the NBA players in last year's FIBA Basketball World Cup here in the Philippines played for the United States end up on 4th place because they're not used to physical defense that other countries/leagues allowed.

Maybe because I'm 43 and grew up in the era where defense was just as important as offense, but I don't get it. What is the obsession with scoring so many point above all else? Watching a lockdown defender shutting down the other team's best scorer or an elite rebounder hustling for 25 rebounds is just as beautiful as a 60 point scoring game. There is no balance to the game anymore and that makes it unwatchable for me. You can tell no one on the court cares about anything but scoring. Their new posterboy, Doncic, can't even dribble up the floor without carrying the ball (very slowly, at that). I don't really care anymore but it's sad to see something that was so fun to watch go to shit.

MJ said it best when he said he can't call himself the goat when he's never had the chance to play against the basketball greats that came before him (and in their era). Those players back then had it rough in so many ways. Today's era is littered with modern conveniences - advances in training, sports medicine, gym, clothing, and now relaxed NBA rules. Today's players are pampered by old-school standards and these pampered puppies want to be seen as the best there is because of their accomplishments which by old-school standards, resemble participation trophies.

I grew up a basketball fan in Cleveland and hated the Bulls, especially MJ. But one night I had the benefit of some courtside seats to watch MJ up close and personal. I was staggered and in awe. Not by his tongue-wagging layups/dunks and athleticism. But by his relentless pursuit of the ball on the defensive end. How a player could easily drop forty on my team and hustle back and be the best defender on the floor was inhuman. And he did all this by attacking the rim and getting beat-up on nearly every play. Again in human.
I now sit back and compare that to the LeChosen one and feel silly. His inhuman part of him was his physique and his speed. But, even back in his earliest days he took many, many plays off on defense and the team's defensive intensity lagged at the same team. They followed his lead which resulted in lulls in making defensive stops.
This is what is missing in today's basketball. A player that steps on the court and tenaciously brings it on the defensive end and imploring and yelling at his teammates to do the same. Instead we see a glorified three point shooting contest and coaches that just stand around with their arms folded having no clue how to impact the game other than pray their shots fall. This is garbage basketball. The league had no reason to roll back the hand-check rule because as Lebron's perimeter game is trashier than ever, he can still bulldoze himself into the lane and the league wants/needs their star celebrity player. So I stopped watching Adam Silver's mess.
Thankfully the Denver Nuggets brought me back to the NBA as a fan. Their spacing wasn't used to merely create open perimeter, they were also cutting and being rewarded by a big man who magically delivered the ball perfectly on time for a pure basketball finish. But as I watch my new favorite team in a meaningless mid-week game in January they too 'take the night off' and fall into the trap of high pick-n-roll and rotate the ball to an open 25 foot shot even when there's only 2 minutes to go in the game with a one point lead. I yell at my tv like an old man, "someone take the frigging ball to the hole and get to the line like MIKE!"
