It sucks to be the only family member that is rssponsible and has to keep an eye on freeloading parents/siblings.
Worst position to have in the family.
I wouldn't be quick to judge the mom. She has dementia and automatically requires assistance.
The mother doesn't sound like a freeloader to me. She sounds like a person who needs help.
Gabster sounds like ne
I’m in that position. Both my siblings except me to take of our parents. Both married with kids and I’m the only one single. They all expect me to give up my life 100% so I can take care of the parents.
Wow Dave is almost a financial god. The lady called in with $150k debt and hung up with $0 liabilities for the debt!
😂😂😂😂😂
😂😂😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Boringname amazing 😍
What a relief.
Right! He sees through the bs and cares about people. Love it!
I feel sorry for this woman. That is a lot of responsibility and pressure. She has got to be so stressed out.
Nikkole stressed for what? At the end of the call Dave basically said you pay nothing else. And your mom has no debt. Tell mom she’s not allowed to drive, sell the car.
I can do that all in 2 hours.
Even if the money stuff is settled, she still has to take care of her mom in other ways.
This is the reason we have to get out of debt young to avoid situations like this in old age.
ConcertJunkie27 debt free now and forevermore ( barring medical emergencies)
I agree.
Absolutely right!
100% agree, I’m doing the DR plan, second job and all and I get told all the time to not forget to have a life, it’s more important to me to work hard for 3 years with little to no life and have a life after that stress and debt free
mandykiwi same here. I’m working 2 jobs and all I hear is.. “don’t forget to play/have fun/relax” etc. I’d rather be debt free that go out and stay broke!🙄
Parents need to be financially responsible so they aren't a BURDEN on their kids in the future. My goal as a parent is to make my kid's lives easier, not harder. Be responsible people.
WhiteBoard Finance I totally agree as a mother of a toddler I’m working towards paying off all my debts and staying debt free for my child.
Unfortunately if you live in a city like I do, Atlanta, image is everything. It's not easy counting Cars older than 5 years unless you go to heavy immigrant part of the city, like fresh arrivals. Anything that isn't prep or metro is instantly labeled as white trash. Unless you are fine with social isolation, living lean is hard. I see ppl taking taking walks after work in dress shoes. That's how bad it is
Whiteboard Finance I’ve noticed you’ve been the first to comment on a few of Dave Ramsey’s vídeos as of lately. Are you trying to build your channel on Dave Ramsey’s back? There are easier ways to build your business/channel like paying for your advertisements. Shamelessly plugging your channel under Ramsey’s videos won’t get you far. Good Luck
Daniel B "Unless you are fine with social isolation, living lean is hard" Why would you ever in a million years want socialize with folks who look down on you for such things? While I believe you that the 'main' culture is like that, surely there are plenty of like-minded folks such as yourself there as well. See if you can find any DR facebook groups in your area, or a church that offers FPU (where others would be interested in living in a financially responsible manner). Also check your local library for events/groups that may interest you and see what type of folk you might meet there.
Daniel B I’d be moving out of that town pretty quick! I love sweatpants 🤣🤣🤣
This is so sad. 63 is very young for dementia and has most likely contributed to some of her issues. I really feel for her daughter.
It seems young for that. My wife’s grandpa got diagnosed at 90-91 and almost made it to 94.
@@austinselleck9484 early onset dementia can start in your early sixties. I have several friends who's moms were diagnosed with it--very hard for the family.
Sounds like some real metal health issues going on here
My step dad was in this spot by 62. It’s brutal, but it happens.
Early onset is pretty aggressive and fatal
"Are you on the deed?" We know who is the favorite spoiled one.
This girl’s sister needs to deal with her own problems. She has a child and she needs to grow up and be a responsible adult.
Couldn’t have said it better myself !!
Isn't it funny how the child who gets taken care of by getting the house has nothing to offer when when the parent needs help? My question is why doesn't the mother live in the house with the other daughter? That would eliminate the rent payment. I so feel sorry for this woman! I would love a follow-up on this story.
this is why you need to take good care of your health...it's your most valuable asset....it's priceless.
Taking the car away is BRUTAL. MAN it’s hard, but you have to do it. And you have to do it now. I am so sorry.
I’m so happy Dave mentioned the driving because she he put herself in a dangerous situation. 😱
You are so right. In case of accident, I think that she can be hold responsible as she is aware of her mum's dementia.
Shannon Johnson You are right Shannon. I’m happy Dave mentioned that also. I know a friend of a friend that have dementia, got into an accident and totaled his own car. It is some serious issue.
Take away the car keys. I had to do that with my dad.
@@Dancing77Kat me too. Otherwise I’d be liable.
Phew, so glad to hear him address the situation of someone with dementia driving. Folks with dementia should not be driving!
Dave Ramsay has never met this women's mother but shows genuine love and compassion for her.
This woman needs to understand that she is not to pay anything out of her own income.
LOL. “I just got rid of $58K of the debt...good”. Dave needs to become a comedian. This call was hilarious.
This is exactly why you get out of debt and stay out of debt. Retire with money and never look back!!
Great advice on this one. Even just stopping payments on Mom's student loans will solve most of the caller's problems. As Dave says, when Mom passes on, her debt will die with her. Worst case scenario, Mom will lose the worthless house she only "owns" on paper, which has no equity in it anyway. The caller sounded doubtful at the end, but I hope she did take his advice.
Debt dies with mom if daughter does not get suckered somehow in signing something that has her take on any debt.
Hope this woman stands up against her sister. Help mom. And you just gave her so much relief with that judgement proof news.
$28,000 a year is a lot better than a lot of people her age.
And it is far better than a full-time minimum wage job.
$100k student loans and she is 63 years old. God help us all. A government that allows that to happen isn't sustainable.
NOT THE GOV, PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY
The best call yet. 100% correct!
She sounds like a loving person. I hope she does well.
My dad got stuck with dementia it’s a very heart breaking experience to see you dad go that way
despite not being put by her own mother into the house's deed, she continues to support and take responsibility of her mom and sister.... very sad situation..
So sorry for all of this on your shoulder please stay strong
She going to take care of her mom and the sister will get everything
@brandon nah student loan passes away when mom dies.
Sadly, situations like this is pretty common in America.
"Yeah in America." I bet it's so much better in Europe and around the world...
That’s just not true! It’s not “common”. Where are your statistics?
This is why Dave is the GOAT of financial gurus
She's the power of attorney. If her mother killed or maimed someone while driving, the victims lawyer is coming for HER.
DeathRowToDisneyWorld that’s not how it works
DeathRowToDisneyWorld ......Lolol
@@doublezeroisourhero well in terms of her representing the estate yes, personal liability no
No
I really am afraid of this happening to my parents. Both in their upper 60's and almost no retirement funds to rely on besides Social Security. Like Dave has said in the past, I have tried to change my family tree when it comes to finances, but the parents not so much.
Matt Simon I feel you. My mother lives in a 40 year old trailer and I had nothing at all saved for retirement. I know it’s going to actually COST me money to have it torn down when she passes away.
@Chris Ev if you don't mind me asking, "What advice did your dad give you"?
Have them retire in Mexico or Peru or Argentina or Nicaragua or Thailand. They can live well in any of those countries on their Social Security. All of them also have excellent health care systems.
"Could end up in Tennessee and we might have one of those silver alerts!" OMFG.. I'm laughing so hard....
6:48 Dave you missed another one. When the people Mom owes calls let them know she has a home with 10,000 in equity that will be foreclosed on soon because Mom is no longer able to care for herself or that home. Give them the address and wish them luck. The other daughter is on the deed but not the mortgage so let the collector's take care of that problem for her by securing a lien on the property.
Thank you. I’m trying to take care of my mother and I needed to hear this.
When your parents are broke, then you know that you know what you are going to inherit when they die.
David Reynolds 😂😂😂🤣
David Reynolds their funeral bills
That;s not so important. I would rather have my parents then money.
sad
It cost money just to die. It cost over 6 grand just to have my dad cremated and have a wake for him. What a rip off. Save your money and get your life insurance.
Why the heck does a 63-year old woman have student loans?
Can't believe Dave didn't ask that question
maybe went to school after loosing husband, divorece or death
Or just never paid them off.
Her kid(s) schooling? (Parent loan)
Not really an important part of the story... we can't change it now
Anybody else furious with the sister living and trashing the house...man what a piece of work
One wonders whether she cosigned on a student loan for one of those kids.
Probably multiple
Then if she passes would the kids still have to pay?
@@DarkStarAZ yep, this is why you don't cosign. You're just as responsible as the main borrower
I️ bet that is an interesting Thanksgiving dinner conversation.
I’m pretty sure thanksgiving hence forth will be a trip to 7-11
Your sister is upset. Your mother is upset. I DON’T CARE! 😂😂😂
I love this guy. His kids better be thankful to have him as a dad.
Dave literally just cleared her 150k debt in 1 phone call. You can hear the poor woman stressing.
She had better prepare herself for a foreclosure on that house. Sis is NEVER going to pay that.
Prepare for what, exactly? It's not like a foreclosure on mom's credit is going to matter at this point.
Yep. Come and take it folks. She wasn't using the house anyhow.
I've been divorced for about 16 years now. I've spent that time raising a daughter, paying off a home, saving for retirement, etc. Now that I'm in a position to date again, it is amazing how many boomers are broke, sliding into retirement, living in houses with big mortgages, car loans, eating at restaurants often, etc., etc. Crazy..
Chas A : And they are looking for someone better off than them to mooch off of, be careful. Suggest you protect your assets for your daughter’s future.
Still has student loans at 63?
michiganre haha this IS America after all...it gets worse lol fortunately my parents shut down any chance of racking up debt for school
Maybe she never paid on them, and most of the balance is accumulated interest.
michiganre student loans go with you to the grave.
michiganre I have no idea I ditched my Student Loans @31 years old. I have no idea how she left Sallie Mae move into her life permanently.
Brianna CC Supposedly they are forgiven after like 15 years or something. The student loan people told me that. It could change at any time but that’s what they told me. Also, if you’re a public servant or teacher they are forgiven after 10 years.
This poor young woman. She just has people who do nothing for themselves. A freeloading sister who destroyed a valuable house and a dependent mother.
She's an enabler!!
Did I just hear Dave say that he loves this lady’s elderly mom? Actually he probably does he is a very compassionate, caring and loving individual. His walk with the Lord has inspired my finances to the point where I became debt-free years ago and now live within my means and very comfortable
“They’re bottom feeders”.😂🤣🤪
WOW!!! Dave you rock!!!
Silver alert 😂😂😂 Dave is such a senior citizen
This story is outrageous
Get guardianship and take her car. And see an attorney about selling the house.
Dave is a Savage!😂
Dave is great
My heart goes out to this woman. She will have a lot to deal with. Her sister has to be responsible and do what is right. Her sister could buy the house.
I love this call! Haha so good
The older I get, the more thankful I am that my parents are financially responsible who taught me well. They introduced me to Dave as a kid, from that I introduced my wife to it and we’ve been able to kill it as a couple using Dave’s plan. Thank God for great parents and Dave Ramsey.
In the end Dave mentions having 500 K in your 401(k), I think he made a better case for being judgment proof and broke so you can’t be sued.
Horrible story and situation. I feel bad for this poor person.
You can turn the utilities off, I heard he say something about tenant bs. She's not a tenant, SHE'S A PART OWNER. She's on the deed.
When Dave mentions the 4 essentials food, clothing, shelter & transportation shouldn’t there be a 5th category for medicine/health? This probably wouldn’t apply to a healthy 20-something but for the mother with possibly early stage dementia I would think this should be a critical need.
BigBoiler508 Probably medical replaces transportation. Trouble is, if she has Medicare or Medicaid, that pays for it. But if she doesn’t, it will take all she has to cover medical.
Last time I looked we take care of people with medical conditions regardless of their ability to pay.
They don't toss people out of the hospital and onto the street.
Dave Ramsey is a financial Ninja....
I have a feeling this is going to be more and more common as some people age with big student loans ..although I believe Dave is incorrect and they CAN take social security for federal loans owed (which most are)
Krassimir Petrov You are right. They can garnish her social security for the student loans.
But the student loans go away permanently if she is declared disabled which is what this daughter needs to get done.
Well said !!!!!!
Dave, you’re rock!
This is Dave Ramsey at his best. Cuts through the nonsense, gets to core issues, lays out a concrete plan. All driven by compassion for an aging woman who can’t take care of herself.
Dave cleared that up real quick now didn’t he?!?
I love how Mr. Ramsey nails it so quickly.
Take care of mom!
Up the flagpole with the freeloading sister and the bottom feeder!
The problem with the freeloading sister, is there seems to be some sort of special needs daughter involved. If you cut her sister loose, then you also cut loose the innocent victim who is the daughter. That might be hard for the caller to do.
Dave is wrong on the student loans. He says student loans get nothing. The government can garnish Social Security and her pension over student loan debt.
Up to 15% yes. But the garnishment would literally be extremely cheaper than her making regular payments.
I wouldnt pay the medical bills either at that point
Great advice!
What a mess. If you were looking for a reason or sign that you don’t have enough saved this was it. Unfortunately, the mother has left the daughter with a tough situation that won’t be cleaned up easy. The sister on the deed will be mad at her sister for years one payments stop on the mortgage.
Dave "so all debt is gone when she dies" just wait a bit and you will be debt free :D
Your awesome Dave.
Dave is a boss! Wow
The sister seems to be total and complete weight of human space. My goodness I feel sorry for the child.
$65,000 for a house is cheap. You are going to need a place to live.
I heard Chris Hogan saying, "That's not okay!"
So if the mother passes away will the caller (daughter) be responsible for any remaining bills?
How do you still have student loans at 63?
That’s a really good question.
Could that student loan been when she was in her 20’s ??
She co-signed for a grand child maybe.
Retirement age with 100k in student loans. How many bad decisions does it take to get to that point?
Why does a 63 year old woman have $100k In student loan debt?
Probably it started off as $10K or 15K and she never paid it.
Good daughter. 👍
I thought that they can attach your Social Security for student loans ...
Regarding the student loans she'd be classified as "disabled" so hey loans should be wiped out, inquire about the paperwork
My future sadly, my mother in law is awful with money and has no retirement at all.
Hi Dave! You were quick to label the bill collector as a bottom feeder. What about the lady who doesn't pay her bils?
The lady with dementia?
and businesses can collect their own money... That's why he's a bottom feeder.
I do not understand why Dave refers to the debt collectors as bottom feeders. Don't the collectors work for the businesses to whom these people owe money to?
They buy the debt from the businesses.
Personally I think I would do something more useful with a law degree.
We really need to have some kind of mandatory testing for driving after a certain age. I know so many people over 70 who have no business being behind the wheel of a car and they act like children when you mention it to them. They are selfish and stubborn and threaten the lives of everyone on the road.
I feel so sad for this lady. What is sad case 😌
I love you Dave Ramsey, thank you for caring. You're true blue, brother! ❤️❤️❤️✨🙏🏽
Here a big hug
She should not be driving! Oh my gosh!
HARD PASS.
Won’t the student loan lender put a lien on the house? I realize the other daughter is living there, but it’s still in the mother’s name. Also, can’t SS garnish your social security when you still have student loan debt - assuming it’s a government back student loan??
Mom is paying the mortgage. Get mom out of the apartment when the lease expires. Then move mom in to her house with the sister.
Brian CC That sounds like a good idea, but there must be some reason why they’re not already living together.
Maybe mom lives in a community with senior care
I have a feeling the sister is a low- life
Well done Dave you gave her caring advice.
Convincing your mom with dementia to stop driving? Lol come on just get the car key and sell the car ..fake the signature done! I know its sad but she won't remember a thing..
That's fraud.
She doesn't have to fake the signature she has power of attorney and has legal right to;)
Jessica Evens Just what I was going to say. She can sign her own name and put POA or something at the end. Nothing illegal about that. I did it for my mom when I bought out my brother’s interest in the car she owned.
She can sign her own name followed by POA. A notary may be needed, but will accept the POA.
She has POA so it's well within her rights. @@chrisgast
Mom doesn't need to be driving at all.
Also, don't tell any of the creditors that she owns a house! If they get a judgement they'll put a lien on it. Let that house go to foreclosure first or convince deadbeat sister to sell it.
Her name is still on the mortgage even if she took it off the house......very bad judgement on her part.
