I am 19 work in security I am from the uk I bought my dream car Honda CR-V 2016 this year for £13250 it had 17775 miles it is newer and I have no debt in anything I got the car in full cash and I am really happy and now saving up for house to buy in full around £250k

I personally wouldn't drive a $3K car either, it's extremely difficult to find one that is reliable at that price. For $10K, you can get a good reliable Civic or Accord. A $3K car could end up being $6K+ once major repairs are factored in.
I have a $900 car so a $3.000 would be a big improvement.
I put Close to 40,000 miles on it and it's still worth $900, so....
My Acura is worth about $3k now. I’ll drive it until it splits in half.

I of course would avoid Benz, Jaguar , or any other luxury car to expensive to maintain and repair.

I got rid of all my car dedt about 18 years ago, I was driving a 500 dollar Honda for over 5 years. I went to pick a girl up for a date once she said she didn't ride in things like that. I look back and realize I did the right and life is great today.

Roger Evans: I can relate, sort of. I went on an internet date with a guy who had the dirtiest smelliest car I had ever been in. I didn't know where to sit. I was afraid to lean back on the dirty passenger seat, without staining my clothes. The radio had been taken out and greasy oily tools were in that space; screwdrivers, wrenches etc....The passenger side floor was almost completely covered in greasy rags that had been tossed there. I had to rest my feet on them. The window didn't go up all the way, and I smelled burning oil from the tail pipe. The noise of this machine was like a WWII single engine bomber cruising over the Atlantic.
Needless to say I was not comfortable. I was hoping we didn't go too far to dinner since I was afraid I was going to have to walk home. We did not have a second date. But that was mostly because he talked about his X wife ALL NIGHT LONG. LOL

Maybe some people get a car because they like it. Not necessarily to impress somebody. Some people do it for that reason, but to say everybody that has a nice car gets it to impress people or someone is stupid.
It's not about impressing others. I wouldn't buy a $3,000 car, because I worry about reliability. I don't mind driving my cars until they stop being reliable (and are worth far less than $3,000), but I wouldn't buy a car that old.

My “Dave car” is a 2006 Mini Cooper I bought for $6k. I am still driving it although I became debt free at the end of 2015. It’s a great car, cheap to maintain and I get tons of compliments on it. No plans to trade up. Why regular working people want to buy or lease expensive cars is beyond me. It feels SO good to save and invest and watch those account balances go up!
In 2015 I bought a preowned vehicle for $16,000. They gave me 60 months at 4.49%. I put $9,700 down, and payed-it-off in-full within 21 months. I could’ve paid cash, yet I wanted the term just long enough to join the 800 FICO club. At that time my salary had been only a mere 62K. Current day, I’m just at 90K, and I am not interested in an upgrade of more car. I just don’t understand why some folks continue to blunder in financial missteps.
Husband and I bought a used 2009 Mazda 3 with 89,000 miles on it with all of its maintenance records for $6k cash about 3-4 years ago and it was a great decision. It's a stick so I think that's why we got a good deal from the dealer. We have maybe paid $1000 total for its regular maintenance during that time- including new shocks. It runs great. Its a semi stylish car. The insurance is cheap. Gas is cheap. We have no plans to get rid of ot anytime soon. *knocks on wood* that nothing will happen to it.
I'm happy... I drive a paid for 2003 Volkswagen Jetta (TDI) Turbo Diesel. It has 54,000 on it and gets 34 mpg around town. I'm the original owner and love not having a car payment. My diesel mechanic has changed the timing belt, filters, and maintained everything else perfectly. Feels great....

i love my 2009 Acura TL SH-AWD with 157,657 miles. every time i get a itch to upgrade to a newer car i just watch Dave Ramsey talk about car's and car payment's and that newer car itch just goes away, they said 7 million people are 90 day's behind in their car payment's and i don't want to be number 7 million and one, so because of Dave i have a lot of car salesman upset at me.

Bought a 2011 Tacoma when I was 25. Paid $500/mo for it when I had a job that reimbursed mileage (so most of it was paid for by my company)

I'm a champ at that. bought a an Toyota echo 4 years ago, it was hit 3 times and got totaled all of those accidents. everytime it got totaled the other driver's insurance paid me 3 grand lol and I bought it for $1300. ended up selling it for 300 when it had 350k miles. Money making machine quite literally

Lol...just bought a brand new john deere zero turn two weeks ago. PAID CASH....thank you Dave. 5 years ago income $85k per year with $350,000 debt, including 17 random credit cards, car debt, motorcycle debt....everything debt. Today, no debt except the house. 6 months expenses in emergency fund, additional savings for car replacement when we decide to do so. 5 years ago we literally got sick and tired of being sick and tired. We literally got crazy and sold everything....house, rentals, cars, harley, dirt bikes, furniture, big screen tvs. Today we make well into the six figures and none of the debt to drag along behind us.
We listened to dave for so many years....but just kept living like we always had. People need to wake up. Get rid of your STUPID CAR....and STUPID CREDIT CARDS. Dump it all. You will start living life again...you will strengthen your marriage...improve your health. Seriously....its that big of a deal. Absolutely life changing

My first car was $1,300 ford contour with 60,000 miles when I was 18. That is still my favorite car I ever had .my sister crashed it but I bet it would still be running today. You can find decent cars for cheap.
I'm surprised these people bother calling at this point, there is a pattern of people with asinine debts, with (in my opinion) pretty straight forward answers... however they continue calling expecting to get some magic solution, or quick short cut etc etc... increase income(more jobs, more hours), decrease spending, spend only the bare minimum that you have to, rinse and repeat until debt is gone.

I did finance a new car when I had my house paid off. Maybe not smart but at least I only paid $19,600 for a little Honda Fit (2017). 38 mpg average and I''ll be driving it another 10 years at least.
As I have said before, you CAN buy a nice car for a good price. I bought a 2015 dodge charger v6 with 36k miles for $17k and it's MSRP is around $30-$32k. When I ask people what they think I paid for it, they guess $30k or $40k, but in reality it's a lot cheaper than the new honda civics you see driving around. So far I have had around $1,600 in maintenance because I ended up taking it to a dealership for breaks, but other than that it runs great with 75k miles and I currently have positive equity on the car. Don't be stupid with your money people!

Nate Hailey a lot of it is guessing, but looking for a slightly used car with a lot of depreciation. The Dodge Charger is one of the heaviest depreciating cars out there because they use them for company fleets and rentals. That means that when I buy it for $17k and pay $7k off of it, I am betting on it being worth $12k which leaves me with positive equity. What happens with these people buying crazy expensive cars (probably a tesla model x in their case) is that they depreciate massively once driven off the lot and you lose $40-$50k in only two years of owning it. A lot of special cars will leave you sometimes with massive positive equity (Honda civic type r or dodge demon) because people collect these cars or they have a high demand with low production. If you would have bought a Porsche 997 GT3 a few years ago, you would have made $10-$30k just for it sitting in your garage. That’s how the car economics works lol
Nate Mazda 6 will be reliable for you. Those Skyactiv engines are reliable, no major issues from them. Just gotta change oil, rotate tires, and replace brakes.

I’m about ready to pay mine off 16 months after I bought it. Then I’m putting money in the bank to buy my next one cash in about a decade. When I got the car, I decided it was time to make a career change and double my income or I’d sell it. So glad to have a 2018 model paid in full.
We just bought the most expensive car we have ever owned. Got a deal, paying a friend the dealer trade-in value. But what we paid is roughly 1/12 of our annual income. Thinking back, most of the cars we bought were not more than 1/10 of our income. We always paid cash. Now we have a 4-year-old car that has more bells and whistles than I’ve ever had (first car with Bluetooth phone/music-on-my-phone capabilities). I don’t think we’ll ever buy a new car. It’s just a waste of money!
I bought one car brand new when I was 21. It took everything from me. I still have that car and will ride till wheels fall off. Never will I ever going to buy new car till I become a billionaire. I been broke real broke but I had a nice car.
Paid off 90k in 18 months. Sold whatever I could, went thermonuclear on debt, ate rice n beans, and beans n rice. Thank you Dave Ramsey!
My 19 year old walk behind mower fell apart. Bought a $3K zero turn OMG what a life changer. Reduces mowing time from 90 minutes to 30 minutes and I'm no longer in pain afterwards. If you have a substantial yard I highly recommend.
Living in Toronto, you can get get by just fine with transit and one car to share on weekend.

A big-city resident can rent a car for the occasional trip. No need to pay for parking, insurance, etc.
Kirby Bing i agree - born and raised in Toronto - never had a car.
Go talk to a local mechanic and ask them which older cars are reliable. I like larger older American cars like the Buicks and Olds with the 3.8 liter. I also like to find cars that are slightly overpowered for regular use because the engine tends not to have to work as hard. I also would trust Hondas and Toyotas but where I live in rural areas they are harder to get mechanical work done.
Also if buying from private sale try to find ones that are lightly used like cars from older people. If the interior is well taken care of, then the engine and drive train are also likely taken care of as well.
I own 3 cars all 14 years or older with a net worth of less than $10k total, and I would trust any of them to drive me across the country right now.
Dave makes a good point about the money from a spiritual perspective. In this country (USA), there seems to be a strange stigma attached to spending money on material things, even while everyone is running around getting neck deep in debt doing exactly that. That's a main part of the problem. People need to realize that money is just a unit of exchange and there is nothing good or evil about it. Being attached to material things can hamper your spirituality, but MONEY itself is not the evil. The evil is inside your mind, not contained in a dollar bill. Your desire for things you don't need to survive and worrying excessively about what other people think about you--these are the things that get in the way of spirituality. Making hundreds of millions of dollars a year does not mean you're evil. It probably just means you're really talented, perceptive, skilled, or lucky (or some combination thereof).
Every kid in high school should be forced to watch this show. It's mind-boggling to me that we fail to teach our kids money management when it is one of the most important skills in our lives.
We have a 2008 Caliber We bought it new and bought the extended lifetime warranty because we heard of some problem they had. Every time we have a problem it is only 100 dollar's. We've had the engine replaced 100 dollar's the transmission replaced. The dealership is probably wishing we would get a new car. We also drive 60 miles a day to and from work.
My newest vehicle is a 2006 and oldest is 1994 both drive perfectly fine and I will trust driving them across the country no problem.. the 94 is a manual Honda Civic so much fun to drive and super cheap on gas..
My friend bought a $800 thousand house, have two new cars, renovated the house !! he got laid off and she fell at work and can't work now. both over 50 yr...should have listened to Dave.

My brother totaled my car but then insurance paid for the rest of it for like 8,000. We fixed it and it still runs well without any car payment
I've never had a car that cost more than $8K. that is nuts. my $8K car lasted me 8 years.
I just payed off my 16 Colorado and I plan to keep it for a long while. It was a 72 month loan and I payed it off in 50 months. My stimulus check was $3900 and I sent all of it to the loan. My other vehicle is still outstanding but we are working to pay it off sooner than 60 months.
So here is the biggest question I have- and I work in car industry, I actually see things from the inside. 3-4 k car is gonna have a TON of miles on it, and gonna require a TON of repairs. That’s just a fact. What’s gonna happen is it’s gonna cost you a pretty penny to repair , put u out of car for days- into a rental or u gonna be missing ur job since there are a lot of areas a bus won’t go. Dave talks about cars only from the point of view of a status. No, it’s also reliability. I’m not talking fancy foreign cars, I’m talking reasonable cars with reasonable miles (especially if that’s ur dads and u know it was maintained well). Please explain

Dave's unwillingness to factor in taxes drives me absolutely insane. In Toronto, 95K is like 55K after taxes. That would take them 7 8 years to clean up. Toronto is very expensive to live in so you figure at least 40K to live. 7-8 is conservative, probably more like 10-12 years

Vehicles are the bane of the middle class. My step-father was a (broke) mechanic when my mom married him. He was obsessed with buying trash cars and wanting to sink $15-20k into them as “investments” so he would have something worth some money after he was done. But he didn’t really work a legit job and spent most of my mother’s income on tools and junk parts. They got divorced 10 years later and all he has to show for that time is a garbage ‘96 Ranger and an ‘01 mustang with a torn up front end. Still broke.
Best part of this show is knowing that I have no debt, have appreciating properties (no mortgages) and live comfortably within my means. Makes one appreciate that even being middle class things aren't so bad.
One of them is the least though? Won’t they have to keep that one? I could see them pay off the truck, be stuck with the lease, andPay off the credit debt. Then when the lease is up perhaps all of the other debts will be cleared and they can purchase two cars Cash, assuming they have their six month emergency set up

Where is the public transportation when you need it. Those purchases would not happen if they were using electric trains, buses, other kind of public transportation, taxis, and ubers. For cars: Gas car max $20,000 any car over $20,000 and less than $30,000 must be hybrid. Any car over $30,000 must be electric.
not everywhere has public transportation. rural areas have everything way too spread out and sparse for it to even be feasible.

100% percent agree except on lawnmowers they are an investment and are worth it to finance and buy new and they make you more money unless u are a homeowner and using it for personal use

Based on the comments, I reckon you must get a lot less used car for the money in the US compared with the UK. You can pick up a fairly decent runaround from between £700 and £1500 which should last a few years, or something really good for about £3000

Yes, we all know that cars go down in value on a new car. However, it makes more sense to keep the car for 15-20 years! I would not buy used! Been down that road and always have issues. I have a Toyota Avalon for 15 years and still runs like new.
I’m guessing being Canadian those cars are probably higher end Toyota’s which would generally cost about 30K or less USD versus 36k USD in Canada
I do not understand why a bank would lend someone 90% of their annual income for automobiles. How many times does that actually work out in favor for the bank, much less the borrower?
