You're right about the Darlene and Elliot connection being the most interesting. It really highlights the duality of two people suffering from trauma, in polar opposite ways. Darlene is the victim that internalizes the anger/hate instead of creating illusions, she is a whole other force of reckoning, but because of this is also more chaotic. Elliot create psychological illusions that keep him in a sort of equilibirum with his trauma, "protecting" him from internal pain. The show illuminates how in both respects, the trauma will seep out and without realizations and change, the seep will gradually become a tidal wave.

    • @kimeraevent
      @kimeraevent 10 месяцев назад +16

Elliot's trauma was a little more intense. Darlene had survivor's guilt and PTSD. Elliot had full on DID/MPD going on. You're right in that the way it has been expressed is due to how different they are in how they deal. Darlene drinks, drugs, and acts out as the lonely extrovert she is. Elliot bottles up his pain and releases it in these blackout sessions.. The show was just so well written, directed, and filmed. It will be an all time favorite for a very very long time.

I loved Fight Club as a teenager, but there were a lot of themes in that movie that didn't really resonate with me on a personal level. Not surprising considering that it was a film about the struggles of masculinity in the economic prosperity of the late 1990s, and I was a young woman growing up in the economic shithole of the early 2000s. Mr. Robot hit different because it feels like it was made for my generation and it doesn't feel like it's targeted at any specific gender. I also think Mr. Robot does a better job of critiquing capitalism and corporate American greed, as well as handling topics of mental illness and abuse with more nuance than Fight Club.

You should probably read the book Fight Club, but it's basically commentary about "how to be masculine in a de-masculine world, especially if you are gay". This is primarly because the author himself is gay, has an awful relationship with his father, and has been affected by violence. Which explains a lot of his themes in the book. Being a family man makes you less of man. Being a worker bee makes you less of man. Being gay makes you less of man. Loving mom makes you less of man. Basically the whole point of Fight Club is this idea that the only way to legitmatize your gender as a man is to crave it out of something, let it be through your fists into someone else's skull, or schisming yourself to do it. DID, while present in Fight Club, it's more about how far men go to control their manhood rather than control as an illness.
Controlling manhood in the logical extreme sense is quite flawed, as seen in Fight Club with MC and Tyler(I think the main character real name is Sebastion). But I do think all men go through this inner conflict of what is masculine and what is not. And sometimes this negotion is internal and sometimes its not.
The reason the book doesn't speak to women directly is because in a way women as a culture are the antagonist to the characters. Im guessing for women, reading/watching Fight Club is like a peak into masculintiy. Idk. But I do think that Fight Club without masclunity as a cental theme really isn't Fight Club.
Whereas Mr. Robot is basically using DID as a way to talk about control and what kinds of lengths you can mentally go to be establish control. Control is a major theme of masculity, but can be used to discuss mental illiness specifcally as a male, or a person living in modern world.
So while sure, Tyler and Mr. Robot are simular in inseption(ie characters created thorugh DID), Tyler is Control Created Through Manhood whereas Mr. Robot is Control Created By Mental Illness. Both characters are more or less relatable through what identities you are ascribed to.

I was obsessed with this show for months. Like literally OBSESSED. It’s all I thought about 24/7. I think I watched it in its entirety 4 times. The way Elliot connects with the audience did crazy things to my mind. Like the show is such a mind fuck I literally could just keep peeling back the layers more and more and more and find more context and meaning and relevancy to our actual reality. It’s pretty funny how my obsession ended actually haha I increased my dose of anti-depressants and suddenly I found myself not so obsessed with tyrell wellick and the rest of the f society crew. Before that happened I went on a deep dive about the business psychopath and needless to say tyrell is scary accurate. Anyway, I still love this show. It’s amazing to see someone come out with a three hour long video essay on it. I wrote an essay about the dichotomy of masculinity in fight club and mentioned mr robot plenty of times in that haha. But I think we all have small parts of Elliot within us and that’s what makes us keep watching. We all sorta hate society, hate people, withdraw. It happened to be that this show found me in a time of my life where I was incredibly similar to Elliot in that sense. Anyway, on a lighter note, the way this show portrays hacking is amazing. Although my obsession with mr robot isn’t as strong my interest in hacking because of this show still persists and I am so captivated by the computer science world and the accuracy of it portrayed by this show. Little known fact is that Sam esmail actually had an academic strike against him because he hacked his college haha. I guess it paid off for him in the end.

Dude, same. I started watching this show around a year ago, and it took me a while, maybe three months in total, but because I took my time with each season, I was able to see all the differences in them. When I watched the first season, it inspired me into going more into IT and hacking, but the show also gave me this cozy feeling and I wanted to know more about Elliot and Tyrell, but while watching season 2 I was going through the death of someone important for me, so the show was pretty much the only thing that kept me going, it was like an escape from reality into the weird world inside Elliot's head, then it was the same with seasons 3 and 4... but it's been so much months and a lot has happened in life, I closeted myself in my mind for months, not knowing if I would ever recover, I thought about escaping home multiple times, had anxiety and heart problems, and had a serious case of drug abuse, so now whenever I see Darlene going through a breakdown, or her not being able to cope with death so easily, when I see Elliot talking about how great it feels to be in an aderall overdose until the moment the drugs come off and you can't sleep, or when I see him tricking himself into staying into his solitude life, it's like I get it more and more as time goes on, and as time puts stones in my way, but seeing him surpass all of that, and knowing that the script writers and the director probably went through similar shit and did this show to get to people in similar situations, it helps a damn lot. It truly is a show about mental growth and healing, isn't it?

Noooo, at the car park, in Tyrell’s car, Elliot isn’t screaming for Tyrell to come out, but rather Mr Robot. He finally uses the phone in the coffee shop to call 911 to lure him out of hiding. Great vid though, really like the shot composition breakdown ❤

This seems like a new channel and it’s cool to see somebody stretch like this and it’s way better than it is at all bad. I opted this instead of rewatching the show and as I’m at the end of it I think he did great.

The scene with Angela during Elliot’s withdrawal is almost exactly the same as in the last episode when she says “you’re not Elliot, you’re the Mastermind” and the monster they kept talking about is his dad, the “do you even know what it is?” Line IMO makes that very apparent and maybe facing his trauma and accepting it is necessary for Elliot to regain total control. It seems to me that Mr Robot’s goal from the beginning was to get Mastermind to free Elliot but for some reason they couldn’t just tell him what was happening because the shock might just make everything worse so he figured his best bet was to help Mastermind accomplish the goal that he was created for, which is why Mr Robot is so insistent on continuing with the plan in the first few seasons but by season 4 he’s realizing that it’s a never ending cycle.

this was honestly a really nice deep-dive/summary of season 1, it's nice finding more recent videos on "mr. robot", it's easily my favorite show of all time. though, for the sake of anyone reading the comments, all of the flashbacks we see in the show (circa '95) are all real moments concerning elliot's father. elliot even makes a reference to 'pulp fiction', the movie he saw with his father as a child, when speaking with angela ("i think i'm pretty fucking far from okay") interestingly enough, something i've noticed upon rewatch is mr. robot is seen smoking, edward alderson is not (he's usually heard having a dry cough, as a result of his leukemia). i think it's one of the few things to help differentiate the two. i really hope this video, despite its spoilers, helps people discover this series because it's amazing.

This is the benefit of story boarding everything out before filming. It creates inherent rewatchability, right after finishing the show I started it over again because I wanted to see how well they stuck to the ending throughout the show and hardly an episode goes by that doesn’t reference the truth of what is actually happening. Even the whole thing in season 2 with him being in prison, once you know what’s happening you can see the nature of the prison environment bleeding through into his delusion and honesty makes a lot more sense, I was really confused about the whole thing where he got kidnapped and held in the basement but it makes so much more sense when they reveal that the dude is a warden and that whole episode Elliot was in solitary confinement.

No, I'm almost certain he's calling for Mr.Robot, not Tyrell. who has been absent and only working outside of Elliot's knowledge. Making Elliot desperate for answers that only Mr.Robot can currently provide. This is made more clear later on when he resorts to self-sabotage in order to further force a conversation with Mr.Robot

If you want to watch a medical show but not interested in the corny rom coms like greys anatomy i would suggest House M.D, great show with characters you become invested in, and even after many seasons it doesnt get stale, also it has a great ending. All the shows I mentioned have great plots and characters that will have you invested, and have great endings. I hope this helped

I’m so happy that this show finally has coverage. I’ve tuned in on it way back in 2015, and while season 1 was definitely like fight club, the other seasons really show how reality would’ve responded to such a disaster. It went into the consequences of economic collapse. It also focuses a lot on Elliot’s trauma and his experiences. It’s not a masterpiece, but it’s a beautifully shot show that isn’t afraid to change styles.
Each season felt different in color and pacing.

I love Mr. Robot, but tbh this is the worst part of the show. Esmail is a milquetoast liberal IRL, so it's not very surprising--though he didn't really shoehorn in some super anti-radical narrative as I often feared be was about to do. I'm ultimately pretty okay with the fact that he made the show more personal, and you can very much read Elliot's opposition to unjust power as moving and legitimate given his family experience with it, but the anti-capitalist veneer and the generational relatability are a big part of what drew me to the show, and it's kind of a disappointment and a pity that Esmail chose to conclude with the implication that, "like, those aren't the things that actually really matter, right?", despite all the evidence to the contrary--evidence he seems to be very well aware of.

Upon watching it at first it just seems like a show about a hacker living in a complex distopya where it seems identical to our world yet eerily strange where the whole world seems depressed and dull. However after progressing with the show hacking becomes a component of it and not the actual focus.
It’s centered around the human mind. Not only about Elliot but about other characters in the show. It shows an array of diffrent people and their dark sides they seems to hide despite portraying diffrent personas to the general public.
Overall a great show 10/10 no doubt it may seem a little boring as first but as the show advances it gets so much better.
