My dad was in the Coldstream Guards until war broke out and he got shipped out to Egypt/Palestine. He was the treasurer of the local coldstream guards association in Birmingham UK He was stationed in Windsor and Wellington Barack’s across the square from the palace. He always had access to the officers mess at Wellington Barack’s. when I was a child my mother made me a winter coat from his red tunic. The buttons and trip were always in the drawer on my moms singer. I have actually lived in canada for 55 years. My dad and mom visited us frequently

The uniforms and bands are spectacular. But the real treat was the last minute with the Gurka soldiers marching out with the red-coated Winkies. They Gurkhas were considered a fierce fighting regiment and first recruited by the British in 1895.

Many decades ago we were taught in social studies that Bobbies did not carry guns. The Bobby at the gate is carrying an assault weapon 😢. Times have changed.😢
This isn't anything new, there's been armed police since before WW2, it's just a more specialised role, so you don't see as many of them. In fact, there used to be a much higher percentage of armed officers in London decades ago.
