Hello from Kelowna Clive! What would you say is the best way to get into lute playing. I have beginner musical experience and no string instrument experience, but have always loved the sound of the lute and wanted to learn. Is it best to find a teacher (hard with covid) or to try and rent from the lute society because I know the price can be a great barrier to entry. Thanks!

Hi Tyler, and thanks for your interest. THe best way to start if you have no lute is play the guitar with a slight change to tuning, and learn a few lute pieces from tablature, the lute's notation. See more on Wayne's Lute Page. Then, if that leads you on, you can get a lute. Quite a few used lutes around on Reverb, Ebay and social classified sites. But be careful, and get expert advice if necessary, because you will succeed better with a good instrument. A Six or seven course lute is usual to start with music of the Italian and English composers from 1500 and later. For later music, you need more courses, but there is a lifetime of music wealth just with six courses.
