I drove this thing, Soviet build Uaz, over 10000 km during my military service back in 80's. Very simple piece of equipment. To service it you only needed a hammer and a sickle. On the road it was hideous but it was magnificen off roader. It almost climbed on a tree and run well in 1m deep snow. I hated it every second.

This is UAZ 469. It is still very popular in Russia and ex Soviet republics. Just because it can pass EVERYWHERE. This car do not require roads, but only directions. Also easy to fix, even in the middle of tundra. Parts are indeed cheap.
It's also true that you still see a lot of people still driving Ladas in places like Ukraine, Russia & the other ex Soviet Republics as well. They're still a very common sight in Russia. The GAZ 24 is still a fairly common sight in Russia as well too. Also, is the UAZ 469 the best lightweight 4x4? Why (not)?

From what I've read the UAZ-469 was an absolute monster offroad and when it came to climbing. We have a lot of these in Africa and I have travelled in them on some of the toughest roads imaginable. In fact I struggle to make sense of some of the terrains this little 4x4 has conquered. It's not comfortable or speedy but when it starts it doesn't stop. Nothing stands on its way.
When youre in the military and being shot at or in danger of getting shredded by a guided missile from a ground attack plane you value getting to safety more than comfort .
I rented the civilian version, the UAZ Hunter, last year for a one week roadtrip in Kyrgyzstan. I've got to say, that this car is extremely basic and did not even have a heater for the cabin! But, it was such a joy driving it, the steering gear has a bit of slack and it makes a bit more noise compared to other cars, but it still handled pretty well and it took me whereever I pointed it. :D
It not only has a horn, it has also 4 wheel drive, terrain reduction and a differential lock and you can damage your lawn with it. There is a reason why it is so popular in the German off road scene besides the Lada Niva.
Don't forget the glorious spare fuel tank feature! If you ever overestimate your offroad capabilities and slam one side of the car into a tree cracking one of the fuel tanks or confuse the green monster with a moose when hunting and shoot through one then you can always just toggle a switch on the dashboard to engage the pump in the tank on the opposite side of the vehicle and just keep going. And did I mention the main battery disconnect switch? Even if your electric system is corroded and full of mud and dirty water you will still never drain the battery through current leakage as you just physically disconnect it from 99.9% of the circuits when parked. It will always be ready to start and go even in the most difficult conditions.
To be fair, I've driven a few UAZ, and it will get you just about anywhere. It's far from being the most reliable car in the world but the off-road performance is truly remarkable!!

No. He is a very common man pretending to be posh, as they all did back then. Now he has gone back to being just common, which one can more easily do when one has many millions in the bank.
This thing is a legend. Its a 70's military SUV. Keyword - military. It was never meant for civilian use. Its about as well equipped as its counterparts of the same period yet with far superior off-road capability.
Top gear tried to kill a Toyota land cruiser over a couple of series and couldn't. If you want a proper challenge, try kill one of those WD50 jeeps.. like a Nokia 3310, its impossible. These things can last forever! Its basically a AK-47 with wheels.
+Raul Bajmatara its nothing to do with features, more mechanical. Its why the Land Rover Defender goes forever while a BMW X5 breaks as soon as it goes offroad.
I like how Clarkson takes a military jeep made years ago and complains about it not having modern road car features... like the Willys Jeep or the Land Rover would be much different
This car entered production in 1972 (about same time GM started to make CUCV for US army). It is still made to this day without substantial changes and sold to public as UAZ Hunter.
I don't think this car has syncros, and you have to rev match it yourself, that's why it won't go into gear. And by the looks of it, these types of cars could outlast humanity so calling it the worst car in the world is very wrong.
@@alanmalan3819 He don't double clutch press and do not adopt revs to gear. I have opinion what Clarkson never drove same like military jeeps and old trucks, they no have synchros. It is not a car, it is tool to drive when road is a direction or road is tanks gauge.
Met one of these in the army a few years back and it was quite something. It's a true military vehicle - after all, the driver had to wage a constant, losing war against one of the most stubborn gear sticks ever invented. Other features were the canvas roof that was always filled with tiny icicles and the mysterious second fuel tank that no one knew whether it worked and/or did anything. Coupled with other fun misadventures with it such as trying to decipher what the hell all the dials and other gubbins that were either written in Cyrillic (which nobody understood) or post-it note translations said in the middle of the night I could say that this car was certainly an experience.
I have traveled in this 🚗 in almost no road conditions... it was a wonderful experience... the car was almost 40 years old but still it was a Stallion....💪
It's easy to compare a car to the vehicles of Europe - faster, more comfortable, more gadgets. But if you are in a country where all you need is something that is easy to repair and can be made to run with whatever you have to hand, then this Russian Jeep is ideal.
As far as I know this yoke doesn't have a synchronized gearbox. That's why it rattles like that when changing the gear and Clarkson simply doesn't know how to change the gears properly on such a thing. It's a military car and simplicity and reliability (which it used to have) go first, driving comfort second. In the time of war you need a car that won't break and if it does you repair it with minimal means of field conditions. So, Clarkson, learn to double-clutch and try again.
jardabc i have one aswell,if u wanna geat up u have to double clutch and if u want to gear down then rev match and then there no rattle sound and the gear goes easily in,these people dont know anything about uaz
@@LeoMkII you do realize your talking to a 2 year old comment? Chances of him seeing that is pretty damn alim Plus your comment sounds just so hateful /biased against UAZ
He knew all these things but it is well known that Top Gear is completely scripted ahead of time, they purposefully exaggerate and straight make things up to be comedic
My Uncle has one for 20 years in Poland now. For its age its a perl yet the only modification is its gear barrel its a wooden stick from the toilet plunge as the other one warn off and cracked xD He didn't complain about the car he just says for todays standards its a bit slow but still does good
I had one of those as well, from the former east German army. Yes, terrible on the street, but it's exactly what you need offroad. It'll take you anywhere and you can repair it with scotch tape and a paper clip. Nobody ever said this was a Land Rover. And it most certainly isn't the worst car in the world. It does what it says on the tin and it does so exceptionally well for the price.
its simple but a very heavy duty car, relatively reliable and cheap, its great off-road and its at least 50 years old, so the irony is inappropriate here
Frankey2310 UAZ's were and still are great offroaders. I have owned one for 5 years, and i wouldnt wwitch it for anything.Sure its "ugly", doesnt have AC, or enything else, but its workhorse, much better than most SUV's novadays.
+RPDBY well its got an engine and transmission that work. i would be happy with it. .hell i ride a bike everywhere cause I'm only 15 and i would jump at the chance to have my own russian rattle wagon!
Does this man not realize the UAZ-469 is a military vehicle originally designed for both the law enforcement and military forces of the Soviet Union? It is not a civilian town car by initial design, so unless some firm modifies it extensively and in view of civilian desires, it won't have any frills.

+Revolutionary Socialist Media russian military vehicles at the time when this was made were not comfortable, was not needed, you not riding to the store, your storming enemy troops apcs back then were so cramped people called them coffins
+Revolutionary Socialist Media Even by military car this thing was horrible, exept by the fact it could run on the worst fuel possible, it was verry good in off road and i think it was pretty realible. If you are wondering why it was not good for military use, check out the space in the car, puting 4 or 5 guys there holding they assault rifles would be a nightmare, not to mention if you needed to take extra equipement, or maybe carry a RPK or a SVD. It was pretty good to take soldiers from A to B or for a patrol car in peace times or small conflict zones. It would need a bigger transport vehicle if you want to carry a proper squad fully equiped for combat. However, this is my opinion based on what i know about the vehicle, it does not mean what i'm saying is completly true.
+brunoraoni this car was made roughly 50 years ago back then during the vietnam war road is not a common thing, to travel from one place to another usually off-road or even climbing mountain this car was design for such and it do a good job, swam and mud as well also a major factor how many time the complicate M16 gun fail because of it. also the standard now and then were much different, the US and GB had rapidly raise the standard over the course of the year but back then this is what they think it need, also the standard equipment for solider change as well, the carry load is much more than before. US and UK pushing the envelop of weapon innovation during the cold war and had been involve in other for the last 50 years in middle east also had something to do with it (though instead of using a portion of it to pushing the envelop of infrastructure is much better in my opinion)
+brunoraoni Reliable it was not. The few good thing about this car were its exceptional off road capabilities (for the time), mechanical simplicity, and abundance of spare parts (in the ex-Soviet countries, plus many parts were shared with other Soviet cars and trucks). The soviet military once calculated, than such a vehicle won't survive more than a few minutes on the battlefield, so they were considered an expendable item, and built as cheaply as possible, so anything that could go wrong, went wrong. For example, it was completely normal for their engines and gearboxes to leak oil, and every driver knew that if there's no oil leak, there is simply no oil left in the engine.
+Revolutionary Socialist Media Gelendvagen is also military car - can you compare them? No. Civil UAZ sold much more then military, so its not military any more.
It's actually not uncommon that Soviet t-34 drivers would carry a hammer beside them to whack (literally) the gear lever into place. Just watch any video of someone driving it and you'll see it is extremely hard to shift. This is smooth as butter in comparison!
No the person driving it doesn't have any idea how to operate it This car doesn't have a synchronized gearbox just like an original jeep or the ford model T. You need to double clutch or sync the gear properly
@@phantomcorsair8476 yes I meant the model A As for the Willys jeep, i guess my grandpa's one is really worn out. It's really hard to go in gear unless you rev match.
Isn't it a UAZ469? It is a military transport akin to a Jeep. Whether it is more or less sophisticated is anyone's guess. On the original Jeep the driver's arse was perched about 4 inches over the petrol tank. It works and you can fix any breakdowns with a hammer, a sickle and baling wire.
Where this UAZ can go, the USA HMMWV would shit it's pants. And yes, it has no synchro-mesh (that's where the gearchange "issues" come from), so you have to double-clutch and play with the throttle. You see - i'm from eastern europe, and we have hundreds of those 50+ years old machines still climbing hills up and down like goats! And i've yet to see other cars live to the age of even 30, and still work with little to none maintenacnce... So stop spitting on russian cars! I know a lot of americans start complaining when they get a car with no hydraulics, auto transmission and air conditioning... but that's because they're so used to luxury, that they've gotten lazy and stupid! :) Plain and simple! U want to go offroad - you have to try this old grandpa! Low gears, differential lock, tough suspension, high clearance - it's got it all and more!
the best way to park it in the snow was simply to pick up speed and crash into a parking space which has a pile of snow on it, only problem is getting out and if there may be a small ZAZ 894 under the pile of snow. Otherwise it should be fine. I did that all the time! Although if there is a car under the snow..... you are much likely not notice it. Whoops. ^-^
I drove a 1986 Toyota Corolla with the same "redeeming" features. - Doors won't open (I had to enter and exit through the window) - Windows go down, and when they do, they won't go up anymore - No spare tire - the car jack is simply a block of solid wood - Handbrake doesn't work - It won't go into 5th gear - Air Conditioner broken - No power steering - Suspension is busted - Chassis is fractured - The key fell off the socket while driving. I then realized that you can shove any key and it'll start the ignition. - Car seats wont adjust - If the engine revs high enough, the exhaust will enter the car - brakes need to be pumped to work - The horn is your only luxury - Tachometer doesn't work - Fuel gauge amazingly still works! - Distributor needs to be sandpapered before starting it - Side mirrors and rear view mirrors are duct taped and shake as the car is moving. I can't believe I survived taking that thing to the scrap yard.
Im not sure how the hell anyone managed to ruin an 86 toyota corolla so badly, i have one which i was given, in 100,000km i changed the oil once, radiator once and replaced rear brake shoes and two tyres thats it, car has 470,000km total now.
This guy is just trying to mock everything. I've rode in the same model. It can go through everywhere, even through water. I can say it is better than most modern jeeps.
It's a bit biased as it's been in vietnam and probably hasn't had a decent service since it was made. Also these vehicles are military vehicles, not intended for civilian use. They are cheap to produce and easy to fix. Basically the ak-47 of cars.
In the war in the former Yugoslavia the UN had one of these that wouldn't run. It was in territory controlled by the Montenegrins. The UN soldiers asked me if I could take a look at it. When I got to the former army base where it sat I opened the hood. 1942 Dodge! I couldn't believe it. Lend Lease was alive and kicking. The two UN officers made a quick check to be sure it hadn't been booby trapped while I tried to find the problem. Turned out it was your basic high school parking lot prank….coil wire unplugged, plug wires scrambled. I straightened it out and it fired right up. When the Montenegrins at the checkpoint saw me coming they cheered wildly. "It takes an American to fix a Russian car!" shouted one. Although this is not a great jeep it's not hopeless. There are worse cars out there.
so, why dont you do your job and find out that ALL RUSSIAN CARS ARE MADE BY LICENCING AGREEMENT WITH US COMPANIES? Kamaz is FORD, UAZ is GM - where is the problem? Problem is propaganda and people falling for it. Read the facts. Complete CCCP industrial complex was made in 1930's by AMERICAN ENGINEEERS AND COMPANIES - they even made special "US STYLE" neigbourhoods for the americans to live and not feel homesick. Keep repeating propaganda it sure makes world better - keeping the ignorance as majority influence on everyday life.

But comeoooon I drove one of these indestructable cars for ages and I have never been disappointed in it! Seriously, it survives everything! Please TopGear, give another try for it! Because it deserves! (Don't kill it, like the Toyota, just test it, please!)
Anyway, you could test other cars from the east (East-Europe and further countries' cars, or cars of the ex-soviet countries etc...) I mean cars like Yugo, Skoda, Lada, IFA, the famous Trabant...
Cody Crouse I spent most my childhood around these cars. They're incredibly rugged. It can go through any obstacle or anywhere at all. Mud, water you name it. This car is unkillable. Incredibly practical for countryside life. As for comfort... well, you shouldn't look for that in it
Think a couple of times before calling USSR auto-industry 'low tech'. The car market was quite modest, but not Stone-age like in any way. By the way, has Jeremy any experience in driving a Willis or a HMMWV?
their auto indsutry is in fact in the stone ages. You're mixing with their millitary vehicles (which are good), but for civilians, their cars are absolutely scrap.
In the army I have driven quite a few military Volvos of about the same era - and guess what? Everything he said about UAZ can be said about those Volvos - you cannot adjust the seat, 4 gears etc - because it's a fkng military vehicle - it must be reliable, easy to maintain and be able to go anywhere.
Wait a minute, since when UAZ469 has 5th gear? From what i am aware its 4 speed gearbox and it has two position transfer case, 5 speed gearbox on UAZ Hunter is in use since like few years ago basically... This is UAZ469B probably built in mid or late 70s.
Indeed, Soviet cars were not too comfortable for common citizen and driver, but in general, these cars are still alive and run over and over millions km even after 30 years of the ending of Soviet Union I apologize, i've just drank my Vodka and have some stupid thoughts...
I always had a deep dislike for westerners hating on cars from the eastern block. It seems like you can't get it through your head what they are made to do. They are made to be driveable in a Siberian forest in -30 degrees celsius through mud and water, to cross rivers and marshes, while being simple enough to fix with a basic toolkit in the middle of the forest. They are made to function on used vegetable oil. Durability, simplicity, easy maintenance.
The one showed in the video must be a worn out one that doesn’t represent the UAZ 469. My dad had one. I learned to drive with UAZ 469 in 70’s and then drove it for years. Loved every bit of it. Even still these days I’m looking for buying one of those old one to restore. It’s a “REAL” muscle car. The video guy simply used a worn out one with the calculated intent to undermine its reputation.
nevermind the UAZ, there are multiple IFA trucks in the backrgound, the black car they show is a GAZ24 Volga and im fairly certain the van passing by at 0:55 is a Barkas B1000. UAZ jeeps were built to last but how anyone had a Barkas running in 2008 is a mystery to me.
Well, no "luxury" equipment since its a military vehicle, commonly known as the "Kommandirski", or commandersS vehicle. It's the equivalent of a Willys Jeep, and I want to point out this one has doors.
I can imagine the designers wowed gosplan's mandarins by pointing out they had 4 doors while the imperialist M38 had only cut outs, and thus was an empirical demonstration of the superiority of the soviet system.
>worse car in the world >40 year old car that still runs with minimal maintenance. Not as good for a minimalist car like the old land rover from the 50s, but still pretty darn good.
You need to push clutch pedal twice to change the gear (if you don't want to hear that strange sound from transmission :) ). The first time - from current gear to Neutral, and the second time - from Neutral to next gear.
Dont get me wrong - the UAZ is a fine car but driving that more than 2 hours in offroad conditions or dirt roads kill you... no comfort at all especially the old "military" seats... u always hit ur head on the roof or the doors of the car. so i'd prefer any modern offroad cars if i have to go long distance (like traveling in mongolia) but then the UAZ esp. with a military driver is getting you everywhere you want. Its indeed a horrible car for touring arcoss country - but the worst car in the world? HELL NO! Its the best car in the world in terms of getting you to rough terrain at all costs - a military utility car as it was intended. so stop beeing butthurt my dear russians.
***** btw im speaking with my own experiences in Mongolia, driving Hummers, Land Cruisers,Nissan Patrols Y61 (my favourite), Land Rovers, Merc. G and ofc the almighty undestroyable UAZ 469 called beloved "69er" by the mongolians
Of course, England guy need seatbelts, adjustable seats and other shits. No bro, this is car for Russians, mostly for their army. It is made to crawl rock, make paths and going through mud and water. Not for luxury, not for elegancy and not for speed. If you want car like that from that time, try Chaika, Volga or other legends, that were better than most of Western cars at that age.
Actually you can adjust your seat in three positions, but you need a nut wrench. Also the UAZ 469 don't has a fifth gear he tried to put the car in reverse He is killing a perfect car. shame on you Clarkson !
Clarkson is making fun of it, most likely because that the script he has been given, but this vehicle was built for military purposes in the 70s. It is far from perfect or comfortable, but it achieves the idea of driving through rough terrains. I guess when you are at war, the last thing you need is comfort.
The classic model sort of does, for nostalgia value. Although it's revamped inside and of course has basic safety and comfort features (as you could expect in a military-geek vehicle like a civilian humvee). Most models are styled (quite poorly) as modern SUVs, and basically are. The original was a good military jeep, I can't say anything about the modern ones, but they are reasonably popular. www.uaz.ru/

@@alanmalan3819 He don't double clutch press and do not adopt revs to gear. I have opinion what Clarkson never drove same like military jeeps and old trucks, they no have synchros. It is not a car, it is tool to drive when road is a direction or road is tanks gauge.
@@alanmalan3819 well the brits car not the good
This version of the car does not have a 5th gear.
I can't believe that, Clarkson was so young...

I mean, it is literally a Soviet equivalent to a jeep. I don't know what Clarkson was expecting. It's a military vehicle.

Well, no "luxury" equipment since its a military vehicle, commonly known as the "Kommandirski", or commandersS vehicle. It's the equivalent of a Willys Jeep, and I want to point out this one has doors.

You need to push clutch pedal twice to change the gear (if you don't want to hear that strange sound from transmission :) ). The first time - from current gear to Neutral, and the second time - from Neutral to next gear.

Uaz is rather reliable and good in conditions where it is planned to be, very rough indeed, but it works. AND it is cheap ! Clarkson just dont't know how to use that clutch ;)
Geez I thought he was kidding when he said “that’s all it’s equipped with”
This is a military car from 1970 UAZ - 469, so no wonder you don’t have any luxuries in there. It was simple as a brick, and a rather good off-roader.
Burzum and Varg vikerness brought me here! At least his opinions were honest.........
is this uaz?
Andy Hea Jin An it's
quite rare in Vietnam road nowadays, now there are full of Korean cars on Vietnam road
Yes this is a UAZ but a civilian version but the presenter apparently does not know how to handle equipment
A UAZ 469
Да.
Its petrol because you cant use diesel in -20'C in Russia winter. No comfortable because its was made for army and never sold for civilans in USSR.
No evil gubberint regulations,no statist seatbelts. This car is the libertarian's car of choice.
The King, that's such an awesome point. This is the #Libertards ' wet dream. #WeDontNeedNoStinkinGubbermentRegulations is the perfect # to describe Libertarians. We need regulations & we need seatbelts. They save lives & they prevent you from possibly killing yourself & others against their will.
The King, Russian Cars are rather cool & I rather like them Just my opinion. But Still, I think that they should be regulated if Russia wants to sell their cars elsewhere
The King As a Libertarian I will never buy such a car.
Frenchfrys17 neither would I....
well being liberal is better than any other crap in the US....
