The National Anthem of South Africa Looking back at te 1995 win of the Rugby World Cup. Revisited during this 2010 World Cup of Football. my photos www.flickr.com...
I was at this game. One of the most amazing experiences in my lifetime that I will never forget. As a Kiwi I was absolutely gutted with the result, but the atmosphere, the event, the haka we did in the pub under the stands before the game, everything was unreal. Something I will remeber till the day I die. Thanks for the great hospitality SA.
Say whatever you want. This is liberation: healing for the whole nation: Africans singing the Afrikaans National anthem, at a Springboks Rugby game; and the Afrikaans singing the Black South Africans' National Anthem. It's a miracle, a"human miracle". We Burundians have a lot to learn from this unique experience. My prayer is that ALL BURUNDIANS WILL ONE DAY LIVE TOGETHER IN THE UNITY OF BROTHERHOOD. I recommend you read Mandela and many other freedom revolutionaries and learn. I have been listening to an audio recording of "Playing the Enemy", a book which traces steps taken by Nelson Mandela from his slavey in the Robin Island jail to the Palace as First Black African President of the Non-Racial Democratic South Africa. The wisdom, the ingenuity, the leadership,...of Madiba. He is truly one of a kind. N'Kosi Sikelel iAfrica!
FYI: in 2017 -- Nkosi Sikelel iAfrica was voted as the world's best anthem by a poll in "the Economist" in its current iZulu, iXhosa, Soweto, English, and Afrikaans rendition. Way to go Rainbow nation! Your anthem has brought me to tears of joy at times. When I saw the unity after apartheid having barely just ended at the Rugby World Championship in 1995 I cried so much! It was so inspirational to see a nation healing! The singers sung in each language they sung with equal skill and respect. It was incredible to see a black choir especially when they got to the bit that features Die Stem van Suid Afrika: they sang that part just as triumphantly -- in language previously shunned a the repressor's tongue. Love from Canada!
We use to sing the same tune in church, here in Fiji. What a nation that i look up to, Thank you Mr. Nelson Mandela for a great vision and for proving others wrong that Rugby is not only a White men sport but A black country can also have a say to it. A volcano eruption was the example reporters used to describe the moment when their first Democratic President got hold of the Cup... What a memorable and an unforgettable moment for those Africans watching this Final.
Found one I hadn't watched yet.................................. Wow, I have never heard the South African anthem!!! Wow, they must have been very emotional... I remember how I felt when Portugal, my tiny country, won the Euro 2016. I was very ill with the flu but looked on Facebook and a friend told me that we were winning. I thought that she was joking... I don't even like football but I felt completely elated and a short while later Portugal won the Eurovision Song Contest too... biggest win ever! In the Euro Portugal beat Wales in the semi-final, as I was living there I walked around with the t-shirt of the win.... hahahaha...
Anyways is a beautiful song, meant for the moment. Considering the chaos that struck Africa during the time, it was hungry for greatness. Also the last lines Sound the call to come together And united we shall stand Let us live and strive for freedom in South Africa our land Holds legendary in musical history.
Het grappige is dat ik als Nederlander het nog net kan lezen wat je schrijft en bedoeld... Maar... De hele wereld kan Mandela bedanken omdat hij liet zien hoe het ook kan nadat hij aan de macht kwam.
Ja bokke I have become an adopted South African fan they are my second favourite team after my beloved Scotland.May madiba and joost and Chester all rest in peace and congratulations to the current springboks we did it four times world champions
The angel that heaven sent us is now returning to his rightful place with our Lord God. I hope everything that the great Mandela has taught us will remain with us and I pray we will never forget these lessons.
Unfortunately the match will always be clouded in suspicion, but the final result was the best thing for a rebuilding South Africa. The All Blacks were apart of something bigger then rugby that day. The 2011 All Blacks may have won the world cup, but 1995 All Blacks were far superior, even though they losted they played rugby I have never seen before not even today. From 1 to 15 they were virtually unmatched. Congratulation Boks, you were better then us on the day
Friend, that is the point of the song. It unites, it does not hold one group above the rest. This song is Pan-African. It is for all, not one demographic. The beauty is in the envelopment of all that Africa is- multi-cultural, multi-racial, multi-ethinic.
im british and believe all people should be equal and the right to oppertunity. mr mandela after all his time in prison said the new south africa would be a country forall races and colours. he is an insperation and a very hard act to follow, its a pity the anc have not got another man anywhere close to him.
@imagineaboringlife they are very proud to play for their country. only very few people get that opportunity and especially to be part of such a momentous occasion. don't comment if you have no idea what you are talking about
It's so american, the hand on the heart, the looking all sad and patriotic like you've personally won a whole war for your country. It's so ungenuine to my opinion.
i was 6 when this happened! ... but i was we had a better goverment - black or white , the ANC is not what it was when Madiba was in charge - we should make a clone of him and keep him in charge! then shit will become better, we going down fast
what a pity mr mandela was not 20 years younger, i think he could have made something of south africa. its not healthy for one party to be so powerful sadly the dream for most black citizans has not come true and the politicians have let the people down badly.
@MrSydneyKing I imagine that he didn't know the new anthem. Even now, when you listen to the crowd singing the South African anthem, they sing much louder once the Afrikaans and English bits start. I'm sure there is nothing 'political' in it - it seems logical that you won't sing as loudly in a language you don't speak/understand.

So according to you white South Africans aren’t African?
I have read and seen the film A long walk to Freedom and Invictus was and still is a favourite of mine
The world, not just South Africa, lost a great figure of peace & unity today. May he R.I.P.

Cet hymne est magnifique. Quelle fierté d'appartenir à l'humanité dans ses moments là. Bayete, Madiba!
J'aime cet Hymne qui représente l'afrique entiére
merci Madiba !!!
Non cet hymne représente l’Humanité tout entière.

It was definitely a good idea (~2 years after this tournament) to make a more "united" anthem with essences of both songs
Anyways is a beautiful song, meant for the moment. Considering the chaos that struck Africa during the time, it was hungry for greatness.
Also the last lines
Sound the call to come together
And united we shall stand
Let us live and strive for freedom

WOW, I remember watching this game as a kid with the whole family back in 95 in nz, but I didnt remember the anthem part. Great anthem!
The harmony of the choir’s base singers is incredible. Even makes Die Stem sound good 👍
It is a smaller world, indeed, without you, Madiba!!
the match that changed a nation
niks kon sonder Madiba gebeur het nie. nog baie dankie vir alles wat jy vir hierdie land gedoen het.

It was just a media stunt to make the all blacks look like a second grade team the best team won the 1995 World Cup and that was the Springboks
Here from the footnote on p. 579 of Robert Sapolsky's book "Behave: The Biology of Humans at Our Best and Worst"
Glad I am not the only one :)
A challenging monumental book, but well crafted, though.
Who else find it from Sapolski book?
BTW it’s sounds adorable and have many sense after reading about that in a book
👍
