It takes decades of study and training to sing like this. We should all hear it at least once and show it the respect it deserves. I'm a hard-core rock gal but I see and hear the beauty of opera storytelling. Magnificent.
This isn’t a ‘band’, it’s an orchestra!! And this is an incredible aria!! Chokes me up, EVERY time I hear it, and I’m not a fan of opera!!! Great reaction!
He (Calais, the forgotten prince in the opera), has returned to marry the cold princess. She doesn't want to marry, so has come up with three riddles for anyone to get her hand in marriage. Anyone who doesn't is beheaded. Calais does answer the three riddles and was in love with her on first sight. She still won't marry, so he slaps a riddle on her and if she can't answer it by morning, she'll have to marry him. She agrees. The riddle was to know his name and the answer must come by morning. The cold princess (Turandot) orders that none shall sleep ... and she tortures to find the name in time. That is why the principality is chanting in the background "nessun dorma". A woman in his history who had loved him falls on a blade to keep from saying his name and revealing to the cold princess who he was. The point of the song is that she has killed many for these three riddles and no one will speak his name. No one will sleep (Nessun Dorma) until the riddle is completed, but she can't, so she has to marry him. The aria ends with his song ending in "I will win". The woman who fell on the blade said with her dying breath, his name is "love", and the princess took that as truth. The princess answered the riddle incorrectly. She thought his name was "love", but it was "Calais", the forgotten prince who'd been loved so much by another woman that she gave her life for him to be happy.
On the side he was a poor actor and limited in his choice of opera. Glorious voice. Might I suggest non piangere Liu on you tube. Pavarotti sings from a concert .follow it by Domingo singing it. Do look at the green coloured version as I love this Liu. Do hope you enjoy these.
I am Italian and Pavarotti is a national monument for us Italians, like the Colosseum in Rome and Piazza San Marco in Venice. His voice gives us unique and wonderful emotions. Luciano rest in peace.
Luciano has played this role in the opera "Turandot" many times where he has to act and sing at the same time. At the end he is saying "I will win, I will win, I will win". In this solo performance, he is still acting the part, and killing it.
I always think there is hope for humanity when I listen to this..That humans can imagine it, write it, produce and sing it...we are capable of great things
I’m glad you noticed his expression at the end. I’m also glad that you listened to that last part twice. It is unbelievable. I’ve probably watch this video close to 50 times, if not more.
Two things: yes, each and very instrument is essential in an orchestra or band. If one removes any given section, the piece will be truly lacking. Secondly, preforming an opera piece is more than just singing. An opera singer is also acting the role of the character. Look closely as the beginning and end of this piece and you will see Pavarotti go into character before singing and falling out of character when the piece is over.
Luciano Pavarotti did something that no other opera singers had done. He sought out well known artist from other genres of music like rock n roll and the blues, and he cross- bred all these genres together with opera and it created quite a stir for a period of time. And by him doing this, it brought him to a whole different type of fame. Here's another song to give a listen, if interested " Procol Harum - A Whiter Shade Of Pale - Live in Denmark 2006" nice reaction 👍🏻
i would suggest you to check out 'Dimash Kudaibergen', he actually is a trained opera singer who can also sing pop, rock, rap, folk, jazz, R&B and so on, and he has his own way to combine these styles in his own songs and performances
I'm sure you have heard that Pavarotti was the best opera singer ever in the whole world!! But do you know that this conductor is Zubin Mehta, the very best conductor in the entire world? And check out the size of that orchestra, have you ever seen such an orchestra? It's HUGE! See those two screens overhead? Those are not for the audience, they are for the musicians in the back so they can see the conductor's instructions. Behind and above the orchestra is the choir. It's HUGE too, and gorgeous. I do not know which choir that is, I would love to know. Ah, you noticed! The answer is no, a violinist on one side can not hear what musicians on the opposite side are playing, they can't tell how fast or slow other musicians are playing. That is what the conductor is for. That is why they taught you to keep your eye on the conductor. Each musician follows the lead of the conductor. As for why so many musicians, the sound they produce is tremendous. And they are fabulous, they are the best in the world, just as Pavarotti and Mehta are the best in the world. And we get to see and hear it for FREE!
Nessun Dorma - No sleep or no one sleeps. The greatest tenor of all time. RIP Luciano. He passed away in 2007 at the age of 71. His last public appearance was at the 2006 Winter Olympic Games in Turin, Italy. Practice. Constant practice. This is an orchestra, not a band. Listen to his "Ava Maria".
Each one is incomperable surely? Gigli, Bjorling, Caruso, Domingo. Make no mistake i think Pavarotti a joy and could listen to him any time. However, he could sing only a limited range of Italian operas and was a poor actor. He was at his best in Boheme and Butterfly I think. Have you heard Domingo non piagere Liu? The green looking one. Domingo did not sing Nessun well.
You are so cute. Love watching first reactions to this aria. Im a rock and rock heavy metal, rap lover, classic rock, etc. player but i grew up with this.
If you want to go for an opera, I've been to a few. The most impressive for me was a rendition of Nabucco, because the Slave Choir chose to enter the stage through the audience section. It was pure vibration and my tears were just wetting my shirt out of control just like that, minutes into the opera. (Mind you, normally they do not do that, but haunting choir sections are really impressive in opera).
Sam, I definitely feel you! What an experience- I wish I’d been there. As a former dancer, I got to dance in the touring Met production of Turandot- from which this aria comes. It was like living a dream to be in the middle of all this glorious ness.
