- Alfa Romeo has always offered petrolheads a little something extra, be it through rorty engines, seductive styling or love-it/hate-it idiosyncrasies.
But the new Milano/Junior - a small-sized SUV - is electric, and shares much with stablemates from the sprawling Stellantis group.
So, will any of Alfa’s romanticised Italian traits shine through on an EV crossover deeply related to the Jeep Avenger and Peugeot e-2008? Top Gear Magazine’s Jason Barlow has been to Milan (Milano, geddit?) to find out…

radioactive accident at the front design...
very ugly. This is not an Alfa. Since the French joined the group everything has gotten worse. Porsche wanted to buy Alfa and FCA, under American pressure, didn't allow it. The French have no sporting culture. Sportsmanship is inextricably linked to Italy, England and then Germany. Everything will get worse.
Who is the real manufacturer of this car? Let’s be honest.
@@wildsic Now I understand why it looks like a Renault Clio on steroids . Is this Italian sports car made by French? 😂
Far from what I want from Alfa. Look half Chinese half American. Ugly and busy front end, boring side view, meh rear end, busy interior. I live in Milano, hate to be represented by this design.
Is anybody getting sick of SUVs?
You're not alone. The Tonale and now Milano make me that much more ecstatic that I got a Giulia in 2018, and it's been an incredible car ever since.
The Milano looks like a mash-up up Hyundai, Mini and Toyota with some Alfa styling cues.
yes and the people who drive them
And EVs?
yes, god yes and its so sad to see what bots these car manufactures and people in general are....can we go back to the station wagons pls? ya know, those things that ACTUALLY added some space?
The general public isnt...that is why it is all we get and all you see when you look up the street. Cars arent built for car guys...they are built for capitalist profit. When will you people realize this is what you CHOOSE by being ok with capitalism in its current form. You need a 5000lb hunk of metal because that is what you are told you need by the capitalists running the show. Humans dont matter...money is the only thing that matters.
Frankly speaking, I don’t like this car at all. But I do wish it’ll be successful so that Alfa can have the money to continue make the car we love, maybe bring back the Spider and GTV?
Nobody with a hint of taste can like it. Which begs me to ask this question...how does Alfa nowadays allow people with no taste to work as car designers for them? I mean this is like a 3 Michelin star restaurant in Paris hiring food designers from Mcdonalds to make up the new food menu. A disgrace.
@@derbigpr500 Fair enough, so what B-segment hatchback is so much better?
It won't be financially successful.
@@michaeln2768 Perhaps, but before making that claim I'd like to know if B-segment cars were on your shopping list. I'd guess not.
its about fitting a design into a shipping container. none of these reviewers realize that the designs are literally confined by the method of shipping. american cars get bigger and imports stay the same size
No one design wheels as nice as Alfa Romeo.
They should stop making cars and focus on wheels.
Bmw
Aston Martin .
My Stelvio is an Alfa Romeo! Milano is a Peugeot with the Alfa badge
Giorgio-based vehicles are special even among Alfas. We need Alfa to make money so that they'll do something foolish and build more brilliant platforms like the Giorgio.
my stelvio rattles, the gear change is awful and the mpg is shocking so yes lets hope its like a peugeot
My Giulietta 1.8 "1984" is Alfa. unfortunately your car is Fiat aka Stellantis...
no, my dear .) you have to study better.
@@isawebb It has ZF transmission, it is one of the best there is. Don't make yourself a fool. The engines are also superb. I have had no rattles in 3 years of owning it, can't say that for wife's Audi.
Those wheels look gorgeous
Oh Yes!! elegant and sporty!
Make one suv and let each company put their own grill and badges on it cause thay is essentially what we have now anyway.
Heavy electric small suv, followed by a heavy electric small suv and another heavy electric small suv. Car enthusiasts are struggling here folks
Enthusiasts don't make car manufacturers money.
They have to appeal to the mass market and these daft "SUV"s are what's popular and electricity is replacing fossil fuels
Enthusiasts are at the bottom of the pile, sadly
I am an "enthusiast" but I love this car. For the price you can get a Golf, or this (1.2 version), which looks much more special and expensive than any golf ever will.
Don’t worry lotus have made a heavy electric big suv!
@@krinos1 ah yes, my favourite motto of them all - complicate and add batteries ! 😂
@@BDMZ404 cry about it. It's cool.
i absolutely love the wheels, but the whole car kinda just looks like a renault, and i found it really hard to understand the front end initially
The front grill is an abomination.
It wil grow on you. You need to see the car
ah yes, can't have any new car without styling complaints from the experts in RUclips comments
@ashkanarabi3785 Don’t need to be an expert to say it’s just not good looking. 💀
The chief designer of this car should have been fired without even giving a reply.😂
@@ashkanarabi3785watch Bembli lmao, he shares the same opinion. The new design is genuinely a downgrade to Alpha Romeo
Am I blind or this car look kinda like the Vinfast Vf8 🤔🤔
I knew I had seen this front end on something!
Had the exact same thought.
So Alfa romeo with +100 year history looks similar to a brand created 5 year ago? English are ....
@@cal7348 the Alfa Design language has drastically changed. The only consistency is the shield shaped grill.
@@corey31 is like people who think Giulia is a copy of 3 series... Cringe. Alfa romeo did that BEFORE bmw
Every famous vw, audi was designed by italian. So 90's Mercedes too
As a struggling brand trying to make a stronger comeback, you have 2 options: 1) Try to compete with everyone else in a successful segment by copying a current trendy formula and apply it to the brand or 2) make something more daring to give yourself an individual profile and identity to disrupt the market and create demand for something with not a lot of competition.
Alfa chose option 1 with this, going for the low hanging fruits. But this segment is already very saturated with many options to choose, so what has Alfa Romeo to offer here that no one else has? I don't know and I suppose many other people don't know as well, I don't expect this to be a major sales success outside of Italy. I wish them the best of luck, but a more unique concept and design might have the possibility of a bigger impact and more brand awareness.
I could imagine something resembling a modern 4-door 145 similar in terms of market positioning to the outgoing Mini Clubman, but very Alfa Romeo in its shape and concept could make a bigger impact - or also be a total failure of course, but I think you need to be a bit more daring these days.
i agree!
the fact of the matter is, they tried making something daring with the Guilia and it was a sucess, but it didn't make any money. This will sell and it will probably make money for the brand.
I think the Tonale is one of the best looking crossovers out there. This though, not so much
well, if you are in the segment of buying an Opel Mokka, Peugeot 2008...etc this one definitely looks better both exterior and interior. i wish alfa all the best.
That front is a Renault lol
and not a good one.....that new R5 actually looks good
The renault looks better MUCH better, this is a insult to renault
Looks like a vinfast with alfa grill
This is a Binvast....bin as in trash can.
Renault Capture PRO Italy Edition ???
😂 no is 2008😂😂😂
@@maxz2552 🤣
Needs a proper engine.
Front looks very fussy. Alfa should stick to understated old style beauty.
Why was the display both inside and out so dark? Do they not want us to actually see their product offering?
Designwise, thats a shame for the city milan
they just changed the name 🫡🫡😝
Imagine having Alfa Romeo's classic design archives to inspire you and then putting out such a tasteless car. If this was a KIA or some unknown chinese brand I wouldn't be so horrified, but it's an Alfa Romeo...and it's called Milano, my hometown, a place famous for fashion, elegance and design.
Mama Mia this is a disaster
Do the following, study automotive design and do better.
In this segment there is a need to grab attention, within seconds. Subtle doesn't work at the moment ( unless it's a 'value' option )
What problem with Kia? Nowadays Korean brand is capable of making excellent designs!! However, this model changed its name for 'Junior' because of politicians's stupidity (they didn't warn about the inconvenience of its name)
Nice enough looking car, grille is horrific though! Can`t help thinking this is the beginning of the end for alfa romeo, stellantis has an absolute gem of a brand with alfa, shame they don't realise it.
Isn't the Stelvio from a couple of years ago Alfa's first SUV?
I think it looks good, better than a LOT of other SUVs.
lol pfp and comment check out 😂
yes in its segment it looks good😉
Looks Shizzzz , american design shizzzz
I wish they offset the numberplate and made the grille stretch lower. Front looks like a Vinfast
The radar Is position ed at the bottom 😉
I see more SZ. But that’s okay.
Is there a reason this was shot like a witness video? Can you turn on some lights? Also - I presume there is a reason why the infotainment system was not on while you were in the car? Is this still under heavy development?
Just after 4:00 when he taps the top cowl, you can see the legendary build quality as it seems to rock about abit
Sadly, this one should have been the Gulietta instead of a subcompact crossover.
Does anyone actually want this before a coupe??? We deserve a two door!
Nah... that's a VinFast, front & rear 😂
lets hope it aint as bad a s a vinfast
rear looks nice
What is the resale value of EVs ?
40% less when you buy new
The Alloy wheel design is one of the Best i have seen on EV.
Brand engineering has gone too far. This is just a generic car lightly styled to maybe look like an Alfa. It shares. Nothing with its true heritage at all. Just an excercise in trying to extract some value from a once proud name. Shame on you Stellantis.
Yeah there are a bunch of versions of this platform. Alfa, Lancia, Jeep, Fiat, Peugeot, Citroen, DS and I may be forgetting one.
I said Stellantis would ruin Alfa and I was right.
Well, let's see what Alfa has done to the chassis to make it a class-leading handler.
Was watching Jack at No.27 review the Alfa Sud Sprint. Now that was a true Alfa. Should have been the car the golf became
You can tell Stellantis had a heavy hand in this vehicle.
The front looks like a Vinfast VF8, is it a re-used Pininfarina design or did they do it in house?
I bet you it is a tweaked Vinfast design 😂😂😂
@@fortheloveofnoise9298 It's gotta be more than a coincidence!
"they're targeting 'best in class handling and performance' " ... shame the 1 thing we didn't get to see was how it handles and performs
It's certainly unique, but I'm looking forward to seeing it live.
I hope it has good commercial success and helps the brand come back strong
Still keeping the Saracen eating serpent on the front to this day, love it
Electric and SUV, how interesting!
How very yesterday
Where have you been? most electric cars are suv's lol
why you made a video in the dark ??
If this is a preview of the brand's future, I'm not looking forward to it.
that "SUV" looks amazing
I'm an Alfa owner and fan, but EV = Meh....
just keep buying combustion then haha ev is here to stay i think it's time to accept it. nothing wrong with being different types of power trains in the road.
@@Teteerck I don't care if EVs are offered, just don't kill the ICE powertrains.
That keystone looking center piece (shield) in the grill looks broken, like the car has been wrecked and something fell off revealing the mount. ick. Will someone with a 3D printer or CNC machine please make one that looks correct?
it's true that it shares the CMP platform with the Stellantis, but the Alfa engineers have done a great job to make it sportier. 14:1 steering ratio, stiffened suspension, redesigned bushings, limited-slip differential on the front. Stiffened structure to increase stability. Too bad about the engine, honestly insufficient for an Alfa Romeo.
Please, call it Alfa Frankenstein, because it's just a random collage of many cars. Not even the engine is Italian: it's an undersized and unreliable French three-cylinder, 1199 cm3/130CV, which is supposed to give a "sporty" boost to this washing machine with an as yet undeclared weight.
Manufactured in Poland, as Mr Tavares explained, to reduce costs, but sold as if it had been built in Maranello.
Update:
Oops.. The newspapers say that Stellantis has just changed the car name to Alfa Romeo "Junior" to avoid problems with the Italian government...
it's gonna be a huge flop
1:47
To bad for the lack of,
The hidden rear wiper
At least you could have offset the number plate
my biggest is that if we need a ventilation grill on an EV?
It's a botch job. Pointless grills and no frunk space because it's not an EV only design, there's also a hybrid version.
@@TheRealAndyR I see
Did they assign this to the Arna designer?
Good looking like it
that front grille looks like its been crashed into a low bollard in a supermarket car park and the plastic has snapped... horrible
Cool design
It's named Alfa Romeo JUNIOR! NOT Milano! Milano is sacred! 😅
i am looking into a 4C right now. The 4C is pretty exciting stuff.
They should keep the mito and compete with the premiums there
Since when could an SUV ever be described as "small"? That is not a small car.
It's a "small" size chubby hatchback.
It is “small” in SUV terms
its small on the inside....
Small Utility Vehicle.
a morbidly obese hatchback for those with no sense of style or sporting pleasure
Only one thing good about it the number plate is better placed .
The wheels looked GOOD! 😁😎🇮🇳
For an suv, it’s good looking
literally looks like the front end of a kia lool
This would've been class as a small sedan or hatch
Actually the 33 Stradale was their first EV.
Top gear keeps on killing it with the high quality 🙌⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I think it is beautiful, and the price is amazing.
Keep the wheels burn the rest.
I’ll take just the wheel thank you
Looking at it and I’m under whelmed. Its lost that beautiful exhaust note and that signature styling that made me desire the car with a raw animal lust.
This is for entry-level buyers more than true enthusiasts.
An electric stellantis car. You’re going to need a tow truck guy, a mechanic, an IT guy and a therapist. 😂
"an..." ? Maybe you mean "another" (sadly).
Unusual design for and Alfa Romeo
I hope it sells well. something SMALL and sporty next please
Finally. Alfa made their beak updated and sleek. I love this versus their current design.
Here in Italy it has generated a hurricane of controversy. I have to say I like it. But I can't say it out loud😂
@francescomarrella9625 you need to get Valentino to do a commercial then everyone will love it
are coure sportivos gonna like this Opel Mokka with Alfa badge? :D
Sure they will....
The grill and the styling in general definitely makes it stand out to all the other small SUVs at least. Hope it works out for them
Saw today that they’ve had to change the name oh dear
looks pretty good ngl
A rebadged e2008 drawn by a blind spanish man. Alfa Romeo has lost its soul running after greed and numbers.
Lets hope it's sell well so we can get a cooler alfa next
@@ukaszdragradny2392 let's hope nobody buys this so maybe stellaris realize they are doing a mistake.
why spanish? lol
Makes me appreciate my Giulia all the more. May go down as the last 'true' Alfa.
@@Teteerck the designer is spanish and comes from seat
A 25 thousand € maximum sold at starting price of 30.000 € for a small suv that's creazy.
Prices of cars are got wild, the cost of living as well 😢
Would be 50k if you were unlucky enough to live in Ireland
The real name of this car is Alfa Romeo Junior and not Milano. Change this tittle. This car does not deserve the name milano. Is not even an Alfa Romeo.
It looks like a damn Renault with the front grill. This only makes business sense to have shet crossover polluting the car scene
Nice renault, is it the new megane ?
For me, it seems that the design of the headlights has similarities with the headlights design of Renault Arkana, Austral, Megane, and Captur. Because of this, I don't feel a strong Alfa Romeo identity in this model (at least in the front design approach).
Only thing I don't like is the front black grill. Looks like The Red Skull's nose from Captain America. Classic one would suit the car better. Like on Tonale or Stelio. And missing 1.2 turbo with an automatic gearbox, which is superb choice! Other than that the car looks really good!
A new winner for longest MDS! (Market Days Supply) haha
Especially the front is terrific!!! Great Milano.. Forza Alfa!!!!!!!!!!!!!
are these small suvs even that much bigger than a nice hatch back..
Finally, we don’t have to talk about “heart” and “soul” when driving an Alfa. 😅😅😅😅😅
because this has neither
They are calling that a compact SUV, but is it all that bigger than a Golf/GTI?
This will make a nice upgrade for CH-R owners who have have done well.
Oh come on now! This is much better looking than that CH-R.
@@rlsedition yes, but it's very similar in shape and size.
@@robbielex All the B-segment SUVS are similar is shape and size.
@@rlsedition yes but the door handles reminded me of the CH-R
@@robbielex Why would you focus on such minutia?
The front looks like Vinfast
Breathtaking!
James May once said, "The Italians invented electricity" .. as his Lambo perched atop an AA flatbed with electrical problems.
is that a renault?
WE NEED A NEW 4C! PLEEEEAAAAASSSSSEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
it looks like captur
AND you get lower suspension... what the point ?
And I'm sitting here wondering what they're doing with the BMW M3 and C63 competitor, because that thing was the bee's knees. I pray they make a follow up new model of that. The rest of you can have the mini SUVs for all I care🚶🏾♂️🚶🏾♂️
