    My mom is almost 90. She's been a beefsteak fan for years. As you get older, you can slice a beefsteak slice and very carefully, cut away a lot of the seeds for those who love tomatoes but aren't supposed to have seeds. We save half gallon milk jugs. we cut it off by the bottom of the handle and fill it with plant mixture and use those. That way a tomato plant can grow huge in the house and then when we transfer them to patio pots they slide right out and are ready instantly. I bet 50% of the people now plant something because of rising prices and foot shortages. Tomatoes were about $2.00 a lb. You can buy a pack of seeds for that and get 50 tomatoes at least off the vines. Neighbors also share which is awesome. Your entire family is inspiring to others to get planting. I loved how you all waited on Daniel to come to the table before you started eating. That's almost unheard of anymore.

      I have been unsuccessful in my lifetime I'm 71 it growing anything from a seed. So I buy plants from Home Depot. It's just me but last year I had 11 tomato plants some of them double plants and everybody in the neighborhood got to enjoy because I got carried away LOL it was fun

    • @thekingtroll2

      @@miriambertram2448 My neighbors love my veggies. I don't use chemicals and I plant in pots, easier and water saving. One single red bell pepper is $1.25 on sale here. My neighbor stuffed one dozen of them and put them in her freezer. She was thrilled she got them for free. People need to go back to helping each other. Your neighbor are lucky to have you. I love this channel.

      I’m interested in doing that! What do patio pots look like? What type of soil do you use? Thank you 😊

    • @thekingtroll2
      @thekingtroll2 2 года назад +2

      @@jesselliott604 First, any "container" that is plastic or food grade I use. I talk alot, sorry. I bought a 55 gallon food grade plastic drum for $5.00. I put a string around it and marked it and cut it in half. I cleaned any cooking oil residue out of it. I filled it with my own mixture of dirt, sand and leaves. I planted potatoes in both of them. The plants grew big and died. Then I tipped them over and picked up the potatoes. No digging required.
      I was at a Dollar store once and saw plastic small trash cans. I say they were about 3 gallons. They were green. I bought 10 of them. I also use food grade 5 gallon buckets. I won't use one that had plaster or hydraulic fluid, etc. in it. Food grade containers.
      Those trash cans, I filled with dirt , sand and leaves. It makes a really loose soil and the sand help the moisture stay in. I put tomato plants in 4 of them. They grew and I had the four together and put a stick in each one and tied the sticks together by the top. The tomatoes got tied as they grew higher. Perfect tomatoes, no splitting at all. Because ever few days you can go out and dump some water on those pots and they are good to go.
      I use pots because if I planted those four tomato plants in the ground with other stuff, then you take your garden hose out to water the ground, 80% of the ground is watered and wasted compared to having them in some patio pot. You don't get bugs, veggie splitting or rot.
      In one can I put 3 red bell pepper plants in it. They grow nicely and when they get really tall, I take a small piece of old cloth and put a loop around the three , not tight. Just to keep them together growing. It's funny because you see all that greenery as a plant and then see all those delicious peppers growing on them. Again, only twice a week going outside to dump some water in the pots, saving your water bill.
      Each year I empty out all my containers and hose them out for the following year with fresh soil. So, for under let us say $20 you can gain 4 times that just in veggies.
      Containers. You could use a gallon empty milk jug and cut off the top and fill it with soil to plant something Anything free is always good. You could always spray paint it if you wanted or wrap some cheap dollar store foil around it to make it shine up.
      I've had friends use scrap wood to make an above ground garden area to plant in or make small square "pots" that they can place anywhere they want and again, just go out and water what they planted inside.

    Have you ever considered assisting a local fire company hosting a Tomato Festival similar to the Lancaster County, Pa Washington the 2nd and 3rd Saturdays in July? They sell over 3,000 Jet Star tomato sandwiches each Saturday, also have other foods available. I only wish they would have green tomato pie, after 2 tomato w/onion sandwiches, a bowl of chicken corn soup and a slice of watermelon or shoe fly pie, I am satisfied. This 60+ year event supports the Blue Rock Rescue Fire Company.

    Andrew, you are 100% right about Mariana tomatoes. When my produce business was open in northern NY, we grew about 20,000 tomatoes in our fields plus about 500 806 trays to sell. Mariana was the best plum type. I would highly recommend trying Sunbrite for a round red. Excellent size, taste, quality and disease resistance. We used to do about 5000 of them yearly.

    As a home gardener my favorite varieties of tomatoes are Juliette, a small plum type, Amish Paste, a large paste type, Roma, and San Marzano. Cherries are Black Cherry,, Slicers are Cherokee Purple, Black Krim, Yellow Boy, Brandywine, Abe Lincoln. I prefer indeterminate heirlooms that I stake or cage 5 feet tall for a long harvest period. We can and freeze a lot of tomatoes and enjoy them all winter long.

    We grow many varieties of tomatoes in our garden and greenhouse here in Shropshire, England. My oldest seed packet is Burpees Beefsteak from 2007. Still producing and of course drying each new years seed for the next. Also grow, Cossack, Red Zebra,Sun Gold, Gardeners Delight. We have raised beds besides 2 greenhouses. We compost everything and have 7 water butt's to collect rain water. We also have 4 apple trees, one which my husband grew from seed 25 yrs old now(Gala). Pear, soft fruit(raspberries, red currant, strawberry, red gooseberry). Our list of other vegetables is long. All frozen for our winter months. Lots tomatoe sauce as well. With food prices going through the roof everything helps. Take care and Best wishes to you and your family. Our favourite RUclips channel to watch. I'm originally from Rhode Island

It's like how we just bought three more pink lemonade blue berry bushes for our home the family has a sweet tooth and no one can eat small. I find having a very happy color is exiting to the grandkids who run to plants and not grandma. It's ok I know my home is there home when there always upset to leave. So plant every color and learn colors mixed are yummy. Like grape's on a salad good with apple did you think all veggies no we like sweet and mouth fun. That's why this farm makes me so happy look at the colors and see how happy they are.
