He was a very nice guy that encouraged me to ski further and farther on the few occasions we got to talk.

Had this guys picture on my wall as a kid. The famous Aspen Extreme scene. Coombs, Plake, Hatrup and Schmidt were the guys I looked to.

Thanks for posting. Very hard for me to watch as I chatted to him at the bottom of the Vallee Blanche a couple of days before he headed back down to La Grave. I was taking my father down for his 70th. I very nearly missed the birth of my daughter who just made Level III PSIA at 21 because I was at a Steep Camp. Cheers!

So crazy that this came into my feed and I read your post. You were in my group at that steep camp that season, and I remember you had to leave early for your daughter’s birth. My daughter is 25 now and became an instructor as well and skied with me in La Grave a couple seasons ago. You may remember my friend Jim as well. So glad you’re doing well. Tom Kennedy.

Bummer. I started skiing in 87’, Doug was one of the guys in powder magazine that I tried to emulate. I’ll pour some out at the mountain this weekend.

Watching over all of us every winter, as we all enjoy a sport, that he not only loved, but helped build!
