  • In "Inferno Part 2", Team R.O.T.T. travel to the birthplace of backcountry skiing in America and the site of the original American Inferno: The infamous Tuckerman Ravine on New Hampshire's Mount Washington. They meet up with some local heroes and New Hampshire native Caite Zeliff to take on The Rockpile, nailing some all-time New England conditions while they're at it.

    I skied Tuckermans when I was a teenager, went down halfway down the Headwall and finished the run sliding on my back head first, trying to dig in my skis and poles. 🙄 All I could think of is all the hiking I did going to waste. 🤣 One good thing I can say about growing up skiing in NH, wherever you go afterwords seems like Heaven. While everyone else is whining and crying, you're like, this is fantastic, super fast ice.

      Another NH skier here. I was in Jackson Hole 15 years ago. Worst conditions they had ever seen. Third day there they closed the place until they got snow. To me it was way better than a typical day at Stowe or Waterville or Loon (way better than Loon … haha). I’m sure it’s financial decision. People don’t ski those conditions out there so they close it down because they’re losing money. Crazy.
      Skiing NE makes you a better skier. Sorry.
      I write that as I’m on a plane heading to Vail. Don’t judge. First time in 10 years.

    Cool to learn more about Tuckerman Ravine. Did it once. I’ve done lots of dumb stuff on skis, but Tucks was the dumbest. A warm, ‘cold mashed potatoes snow’ spring day- I think I got 4 turns in. Big jump turns, cause those mashed tators weren’t budging. Felt like my heart was busting out of my ears. Crazy adrenaline rush!

    Grew up racing at Fryeburg academy and Mt Washington Valley ski team. One of the best places on the east coast. Have not been there in decades but after surviving cancer this year will make the trip late in the late spring! Awesome in the winter and if the wind is right will use power kites as the ski lift, more runs, less work!

    • @topherdean1024
      @topherdean1024 7 месяцев назад +1

      🤔Fryeburg Academy, that's in Maine right? I raced for Oyster River High School. Good times. I was thinking about using kites as lifts just the other day. I haven't heard about that for decades. With all the advancements in Kite surfing, you would think Kite skiing would be more popular. It's funny, because I always thought it looked like a great idea, but then decided it must not be so great, since I haven't seen or heard anything about it in decades, until you mentioned it. Maybe I should look into it some more. I live in Hawaii now and ski Mauna Kea, which is kinda rough, going from sea level to almost 14,000 feet in a few hours and then hiking in ski boots. A kite to get back up would open up a lot of backcountry terrain. mahalo.

    • @ChrisDavis-sx3nq
      @ChrisDavis-sx3nq 7 месяцев назад

      @@topherdean1024 The kites make awesome ski lifts. Just look at what they are doing in Europe. 4000 vertical feet in 15-20 minutes uphill then they either ski or fly back down. The issue with Mt Washington is the unpredictability of the weather. I have seen it go from 84 and sunny to 33 and blizzard in August over 5 minutes. You have a 6-8 m kite up and the wind goes from 20-30 knots to 70 knots in 5 minutes and you would be lucky to land on Wildcat ski area. I have not done it, a few friends have but they only do it when conditions are perfect and expected to stay that way. Hawaii, the wind is probably much more consistent. Tear it up and send pictures!!
      I live near Ocean city MD so kite all the time spring to fall. Winters I head back up to Fryeburg when I can and we kite the lakes. If no wind go ski! Win-win either way.
      But before I die I will have a kite on mt Washington above tree line pulling me all over the presidentials on skis : ) I bet I could kite ski 100+ miles there in the course of about 4-6 hours.......

    In my sorted youth (1970s) I spent hours climbing Tucks, a brutal effort. I took a break at the top to recharge. Gathered my courage and pushed over the edge of the easiest trail. Made it about 50 feet, fell and slid almost all the way to the bottom. I went home

      Next time tell them that the White Mts used to be taller than the Himalayas and now they're old and beautiful with lots of character. NH is so beautiful. My Mom used to live in Lincoln and my Niece lives in her house now. I went up there to sell it after our Mom passed away, but when I took the exit off 93, there was a fresh dusting of spring snow covering the notch, it was so moving, I couldn't do it. And I live in North Kohala Hawaii, which is spectacular. It's truly a special place on this planet. I'm glad people out west don't get it. I take it back, next time just tell them, yup, it's horrible in NH, so lame, don't go there.

      I still haven't tried fat skis. Last March I was in Tahoe and skied on my all mountain boards and it was incredible. The powder was so deep that my head never came above grade, even on my up weight in between turns. Burrowing. I can see that fat skis would be great in the crud though.

      Great in the Summer too. I remember standing on the rim, totally naked and there was a puddle of water on the edge. I scooped it up and watched as the dropps fell to the bottom, sparkling like diamonds. It's amazing to look at in the summer, because it's nothing but cliffs all the way around, I couldn't believe believe anyone could ski that thing. It gives you the idea of how much snow piles up in that bowl, must be hundreds of feet deep.

    • @topherdean1024
      @topherdean1024 7 месяцев назад

      Ya, I agree. Out west gnarly ravines like that are everywhere. The back country out west is as steep as it gets. There's an unlimited amount of terrain that's so gnarly that nobody has ever skied it. No comparison really. But that doesn't mean I don't love Tuckermans or NH, one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Oh, and Mount Washington has killed more people than any other mountain in the United States. Part of the reason for that is that it's so accessible to the ignorant masses, but another part is it has the most dangerous weather patterns. It can go from a gorgeous summer day to a freezing blizzard in a matter of hours. It has some of the highest wind speeds ever recorded, over 200 MPH. Worst avalanche danger too.
