It's like he's a completely other person, not as extroverted, smiling, wild and charismatic as he were before when he first joined the band. I listened to this album in full today for the first time and it caught me so off guard I love bssm. I thought the exact same thing too. I was thinking like, half this album is just ratm vibes.
Of course things were quickly going downhill but I wouldn't say that was tense at all. The talking before Higher Ground was them joking around. John being sarcastic that he was excited that it was New Years. This show was pre-recorded on December 15th 1991 and all the people there had to act like it was New Years Eve.

Is there any performance from that era where John is in good shape? I mean also whith good quality of sound and vídeo. I love it anyway, specially the SNL under the bridge, but also i would like to hear the band from that time playing a BSSM song having a blast.
I doubt he actually hated it, considering how thoughtful he was in everything he created. I suspect that he resented the album for skyrocketing them into being the biggest band in the world, which he never wanted, and truly hated, and severely worsened his self-sabotage. John has a similar mind. In his first interview in his house and after the first time he left the band, he said that he didn’t think they would get much bigger than they were when he joined, and that he hadn’t wanted it to happen. Then BSSM blasted them to stardom and he quit the band and is lucky he didn’t die in those following years.
This RHCP were weird. AK spent 1990 NYE show in SF complaining about, "The Cramps bitches left pussy juice on the mic stands" The Hillel RHCP era had a funky brotherhood vibe & less ego.
