    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Detective Len Fenerman (Michael Imperioli) questions Mr. Harvey (Stanley Tucci) about the recent murder.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
Fourteen-year-old Susie Salmon (Saoirse Ronan) is just experiencing the pangs of first love when she's viciously murdered by her neighbor Mr. Harvey (Stanley Tucci), a predatory wolf in J.C. Penney clothing. As her family slowly begins drifting apart while struggling to make sense of their loss, Susie bravely attempts to find her footing in the hereafter. Meanwhile, down on earth, Mr. Harvey is feeling confident that he's covered his tracks well enough to get away with the crime, and begins honing in on his next victim -- Susie's younger sister, Lindsey (Rose McIver), who's beginning to suspect that he's not the harmless suburbanite he portrays himself to be. Director Peter Jackson reteams with King Kong and Lord of the Rings trilogy co-screenwriters Philippa Boyens and Fran Walsh to adapt Alice Sebold's bestselling novel for the big screen.

I like the symbolism of the cop being blocked from seeing the truth by Harvey at every window. He lets the cop see what he wants him to.

What I love about this movie is they show the ignorance of the FBI and detectives back in the 70's. They didn't have a lot of experience with serial killers and there hadn't been any moves made yet to try and profile a killer or try to understand their mind. In reality a man like George Harvey WOULD be very suspicious. An unmarried, private and slightly 'off' loner who is known for A) making doll houses for kids he doesn't have and building hunting structures. Serial killers often operate within their own race and tend to be the quiet, seemingly harmless type (jeffery dahmer, ted bundy, co-ed killer). They would have a lot of reason to interview him.

Well he struggled for awhile after he was expelled from East Side High by Joe Clark and then afterwards joined the mob where he would eventually fake his own death. He then became a cop and was promoted to detective. Having messed up this case, even though he says he did-dent, he was forced to resign and find work as a personal driver where he was sadly killed trying to help a young girl who was kidnapped. Tragic.

You're right, my gut saved me. There was this friendly old guy who studied psychology with me. Two years later I called him to catch up, and he invited me for lunch. I found it strange that he was never nervous, somehow it wasn't reassuring that he was great at conversation. At the end, he asked me if I wanted to go to a natural park behind my campus, and I accepted. The more I walked into the jungle, the more intense the bad gut feeling got. Turning around, I said "I have to go", and walked away as fast as possible. He sat on a tree trunk and with a creepy smile, said "Here, come sit with me". I said "No", and kept walking. He drove me back to my campus, and I blocked his ass.

      @DaytonaHkk 2 года назад +7

I interpreted it in another way. there is a saying in my part that goes like this: there is no worse deaf than those who do not want to hear. the detective had everything in front of him, the house, the clues and the guilty. the director shows us how despite the change of shot the only thing that was in the house was him (guilty) but the policeman continued to look and not to see.

I believe this scene clearly depicts the idea of a sort of 'game' that Mr. Harvey plays with the cops and everyone else throughout the entire movie. To him it appears to be some sort of a game. Its like Mr. Harvey knows what moves the cops/detectives are going to make. Notice when the detective looks through one window, Mr. Harvey quickly looks back at him through the window on the opposite side. There's some sort of synchrony between their movements. It's like watching two chess players, only thing is in this case, the villian is sadly always one step ahead.

That actually reminds me of a chess move where the rook chases the king to the corner of the board. The king takes one step, then the rook quickly matches it. You can’t outmaneuver the rook so you’re forced to lose once there’s no where to go

A lot of serial killers collect mementos from their victims, thus Mr Harvey taking Susie's charm bracelet. I think it was left out in the movie to illustrate his arrogance; he really believed that he would not get caught, so it's like he's taunting the police, playing a game, similarly to the dollhouse moment.

The dollhouse was the biggest clue he murdered her. Not just because it’s creepy for a middle age man, divorced, with no children in his life to build a dollhouse but when the officer asked “what’s that underneath the stairs” and he replied “oh, that would be the basement.” - idk I’ve taken forensic anthropology and community relations courses and that’s what stuck out to me. That’s off.

The book, the film; they're both agonising. We've been conditioned to get catharsis in these movies, the moment when the killer gets what's coming to him. Yet both the book and the film delight in not just denying it to us, but dangling it in our faces before snatching it away. The Lovely Bones is one long, heartbreaking tease.
In truth this is how it goes a lot of the time though: no catharsis for the families of the victims, just anguish and pain, and victims left unavenged. It's at least true to life in that sense.

I find it fascinating how this movie shows the ignorance and lack of knowledge of serial killings amongst detectives and investigators.
All the signs he showed sweating, staring blankly at stuff, his story filled with "probably-s", and general nervousness would've instantly got him caught within 5 minutes in today's world.
It's just kinda sad that people like this could exist amongst and avoid the law so easily.

I think a lot of people have experiences dealing with weirdos like this guy. I remember I was walking to karate camp when I was a kid. My mom was with me but far behind as I walked faster down the road. I turned the corner and a car pulls up. Grey BMW. The guy in it asked if I needed a ride. I said no I think I’ll be ok. Then he asked again saying my son goes there all the time I’ll give you a ride etc. I then told him I’m ok and my mom is around the corner. As soon as I said that he sped off.
Some people are deranged. An unfortunate part human life and they should jump off the nearest cliff asap.
Be careful. And keep your kids safe and well aware of these types and avoiding them.
