I must read a compare and contrast between Dumas and Hoffman. I can imagine the Hoffman is darker, I loved 'The Sandman'.

Oh my gosh, I *just* finished The Santa Klaus Murder and loved it! I have Mystery in White on my shelf and I plan on getting to it this month. Also, I'm slightly obsessed with the British Crime Library editions! 🤓 Thanks for sharing!

Golden Age crime novels are my favourites and ordered a bunch on my kindle. I just read Mystery in White over the weekend and found it unusual and entertaining. I couldn’t imagine where it was going. I’m reading Death Comes at Christmas by Gladys Mitchell now and enjoying it. I have The Wintringham Mystery by Anthony Berkeley up next.

This was great. I really need to read The Nutcracker-just one of those stories I’ve never read. Love your tree!

Thanks for some wonderful recommendations Jennifer. I might try some of the murder mysteries and the Dumas version of The Nutcracker, not to mention seeing if I can track down the Gogol book. I always watch the Nutcracker ballet. I do tend to read A Christmas Carol every year (started it yesterday in fact), and watch The Muppet Christmas Carol.

I have to admit I did not see Ottessa Moshfegh coming as a Christmas recommendation. 😂 Love it. I have been debating if I want to watch the Eileen film adaptation or read the book first. I’ll be reading Kingdom of Sweets soon. A dark Nutcracker retelling sounds perfect.

I decided to read it before the film and I'm interested to see how it turns out--the novel feels so internal!

The tree is so pretty, and the other decor too.
I just read , at last-- and finally i might add--A Christmas Carol, just finished it before seeing your video ,a near DNF 😮. So i was relieved to hear your comment as i felt such a bah humbug outcast!! 😂 i liked the ending. Thanks for recs. Im very into the BL crime series ( & women writers), need to read the 2 besides Mystery in White which was fun, different.

How about my find this year, though I've always known about it through the Welsh Christmas classic film: A Child's Christmas in Wales ( w/Denholm Elliot as Grandpa and wonderful boy actor)- the sift- cover illustrated, of Course! By the great delight Edward Ardizzone whose memoir of childhood and how he became an illustrator I recently found at great new bookshop in Oakland! Hooray for Dylan Thomas and Edward Ardizzone!

Was thinking about Gogol today. He can be really dark. There are some folk horror stories that I love by him, and of course the novel Dead Souls. That novel is really dark. Love also ETA Hoffman and he can be scary. Love German Romantics, he was one of most famous. Recommend most of them.

Hiddensee by Gregory Maguire is a wonderful retelling of the Nutcracker. It is from Drosselmeyer's point of view.

I am reading A Christmas Party by Georgette Heyer-can't figure it out after reading 192 pages out of 398! It really is a good locked room mystery! Like Inspector Hemingway. I do love The British Library Crime Classics-even own that Mystery in White-might read that next!

Please read The Sandman by ETA Hoffmann. It’s 19th century Gothic and absolutely fantastic !!
