I cobbled together a pull-through for keeping our drainage channels clear, which worked pretty well. Inevitably a lot of rust forms inside them too, which can clog things up when it starts to flake off. I used to spray lubricant into them to prevent this, but in one of those sod's law situations, the oily coating, being sticky, used to cause more leaves, hairs, dead insects, stardust who knows? to build up in there, so it was not really a useful tactic.
I can't imagine anything scarier on a houseboat then waking up to standing water or fire, of course. Glad you were able to sort it! That 34 years of experience helps, I'm sure. Hope the flooding subsides soon. Here in the northeastern part of the US we'll be getting a foot or more of snow in a couple of hours and my little river town is in a flood zone, so I know how serious the rising waters can be. Stay safe out there!
Glad you figured it out and it wasn't worse. Noticed your "water sprite" photo on your Redbubble merch...may need to get a notebook with that on the cover.
That’s a bit worrying, so glad you were able to sort it out. Thought how cosy your boat looked with the plants and interesting lights. Trust Bushka and Midge are okay 👍🏻😊
Hi Phil a chilling story as you say you can never be too complacent living on a boat. We are the same you've always got to keep one eye open. With a cruiser stern rain always runs along the gunwale to the engine bay. We affected change on our cruiser stern boat by having welded rods placed before the engine bay to deflect rain water into the canal it worked dry engine bay happened. We are both very pleased that you solved the issue and you're okay. Keep safe warm dry and virus free. Safe journey travels Phil. Hope to meet you one day on the cut.
Glad you and your boat are both well and afloat. In the future I would love to hear about the the cats. History and and how they are getting along. I also see you have plants aboard?
Bless ya! That was an only on a boat can happen thing eh? Glad you were ok! Our rental Canal boat in 1974 had a similar tightening of the ropes. We were falling out of beds! Someone had left the lock gates open and our bit of canal was almost dry! Adventures or what?😊
Hi Phil, drips are always a worry on a boat and I’m glad that it wasn’t serious. Here’s my drip story.Back in my narrowboat days I was a bit fanatical about leaks etc so had an automatic bilge pump in the engine bay and also a tin can under the stern gland (which always drips a bit) but the can is easily emptied and all stays dry. However after about 3 years I checked under the bedroom floor at the rear of the boat and found about 1 gallon of water which I pumped out.I couldn’t find any leaks so all a bit odd.About a year later I refurbished the bathroom and replaced all the pipes feeding it from the calorifier. There was a joint in one plastic pipe under the bed.It was a grey plastic compression type but I noticed that someone had muddled parts from two different manufacturers resulting in the most minuscule leak that had taken years to accumulate. It was a hot water pipe so I think the drip evaporated in the day but at night when it cooled down it dripped Thanks Phil and roll on spring.
Hi Phill yes when I bought my boat in 2021 after a few days I saw my boat wasn't lying level it was down on the port side I didn't like that , so tried moving items to the starboard side the trouble was the cooker , &:fridge & battery's are port side so wasn't easy to get it level !! So I moved the generator & a full jerry can of diesel and at last it looked much better level !! Anyway like you had a lot of rain in the night and kept awake by the sound of water anyway my carpet up the front end were soaking wet as water in the well deck had come over the sill under the front doors !! So luckily I was near a boat yard in Tamworth !! Brilliant guy there said oh have you checked your bow drain as it may be blocked up !! And he was right also he said it's on the port side so the boat was designed to list towards it so I now look at that regularly especially in autumn after leef Fall but how strange to need to keep the boat with a slight list to the port side all the best from Dave leaning to the right 😃👍
I haven't seen the plasma ball for a long time Phil, I used to have one. Glad nothing serious about the boat. Stay dry my friend 🙂
I've had that thing for years, rarely use it.
Gave me a bit of a fright😲 Happy you know your stuff..😊. Take care...😊
It's got worse now! We're still ok.
You listened to your instincts there Phil and made you react. With that you put something right that could have been a nasty situation!
It could have been very bad if for example I had gone away for a few days.
Happy to hear it was a minor inconvience for you!
It's a good job I was there at the time.
Bit scary Phil. Glad all is well now. Hope the Puss cats ok.?
We're fine but the flooding is much worse today!
34 years on your boat - wow! Your plants seem to be looking good - especially being winter time - maybe a closer look at them some time.
Thank you. It will be 34 years next August.

I use a sink unblocker spring thingy to unblock the deck drainage channels.

Be careful out there, it's a dangerous world.
Glad you figured it out and it wasn't worse. Noticed your "water sprite" photo on your Redbubble merch...may need to get a notebook with that on the cover.
Thank you. The water sprite is very small so won't be seen easily. A 12" x 8" print is about the smallest size to see it. 😉
I'll put that image on Patreon as a free download. ;-)
Hello Phil luckily you could fix the problem without expense. hope your ok take care. 👍👍
Thanks 👍

My boat needs a good Spring clean!
Good job you were aware of it.
Thanks hopefully one day you can get the boat lifted out and have a good look at the bottom. Get some blacking on it
Thank you very much. 😃
Oh bless you! Glad it all turned out ok in the end 🥰
Thank you. We were ok this time. The water has risen considerably since then and is flooding the towpath in places.
@@NarrowboatJourneys oh gawd! Stay safe and hope you and the boys are ok
your story is cool bro. subscribed.
Thanks and welcome aboard!

I don't have that problem but the deck channels sometimes get blocked and overflow.
Once you hear a drip on a boat you can never unhear it !
Not something you can ignore!
@@NarrowboatJourneys I got one while on hard standing blacking the boat that was confusing! Blocked rain channels again.
Hey Phil! Very glad you thought to go ahead and get up and check. Glad everything turned out okay.
Glad you and your boat are both well and afloat. In the future I would love to hear about the the cats. History and and how they are getting along. I also see you have plants aboard?

You'd be amazed at how much water can seep in through a leaky window as well.

My boat is ballasted slightly off level to allow the kitchen sink draining board to work.
Very interesting Phil, I'll remember your advice when i go on my narrowboat holiday 👍
Never underestimate water, no matter how experienced you are, a lesson to all boaters...hmmm leaves, mud, better check.
good vid on cut thank goot see you on after tbhne water thing thanks lee
Thanks 👍
