Westlake police: Newborn baby found still attached to unconscious mother, who gave birth in hotel

- The parents of a newborn baby are facing child endangerment charges after Westlake police say the mother was found unconscious while still attached to the infant's umbilical cord.
According to a release, members of the Westlake Police Department and Westlake Fire Department were dispatched to the WestSpring Inn on Sperry Road at approximately 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday.
Officers learned that a woman was walking her dog in the parking lot of the hotel when she noticed another woman lying in the grass unconscious. The woman turned out to be a nurse who works in the NICU unit at MetroHealth, according to a Westlake police report.
"Most alarming was that this unconscious woman still had a newly born infant attached to her via the baby's umbilical cord. The baby was crying laying face down in the grass," Westlake police noted in the release.
The nurse walking the dog attempted several times to wake up the new mother before "she revived." Then, the nurse told police she asked the hotel staff to call 911, then cut the umbilical cord and cared for the baby until Westlake EMS arrived.
As EMS took care of the mother and baby, police began its investigation of the scene.
Officers say the mother of the baby is 42-year-old Chanel Catherine Mueller, a Cleveland resident who was staying at the hotel with 35-year-old John D. Bratsch from Westlake.

If she collapsed, it's a medical emergency.
She was high, you can't just be pregnant and do drugs lol it's still considered child endangerment, and she did nothing to ensure a safe home birth she was in a hotel...
@@zzzroxyzzz Did they actually say that she was high?
@@rachelgonzalez8051 yeah... rewatch it
@@zzzroxyzzzyou’ll be kind enough to provide a time stamp in the video for us where they sat she was on drugs? Thank you.
The man told police that *he* was a drug user but nobody ever said whether the mother was a drug user or not. They said they *weren't sure* if she passed out because of blood loss *or* drug use. So they suspect drug use because the guy use drugs but they never explicitly said that she *is* also a drug user. She could have passed out from blood loss.
Thank you to the Nurse for saving the baby
This woman looks like she's been beaten.
If she just gave birth without medical help, and she collapsed while walking outside, something is way, way off here. They need to get to the bottom of the matter before judging, and before publishing this as a news story online. Maybe she is an unfit mother, or maybe she didn't know what she was doing, considering what she had just gone through. The authorities have a responsibility to get all the facts before charging anyone, and I hope they took the time to do that here. IMHO.
I agree. Don't get me wrong from the boyfriend to the living situation it seems the baby would be better off not with these folks. However, they arrested the mother who had just given birth and the video stated not knowing if mom passed out because of blood loss or drug use. Seems weird to arrest her for child endangerment IF they don't know what happened to mom. A bit confusing.
@jennifertheobald9823 I agree! People are making assumptions and saying things like, "Obviously, she was high." We don't know all the facts. Smoking a cigarette, as disgusting as it is, IMHO, is not illegal. She could be victimized by her boyfriend in some way. We don't know. I hope the baby is safe and that the mother is treated fairly.
THANK YOU! I get she's probably addicted to drugs but that also just means she needs help and not instant condemnation.
Hopefully, she's not a drug user if she resorted to smoking a cigarette. I can't imagine giving birth outside a hospital but hey, in this day and age -- delivering at a hospital is a huge expense. Many do not have insurance. No matter their circumstances, that's horrific the woman passed out outside as well as what the baby endured. THe dad needs to get cleaned up and kick this habit. It's heartbreaking the family was in a motel. We have a horrible epidemic -- why are we sending weapons to foreign wars when we need to aid our own citizens and stop judging because judging is not going to fix problems. Everyone needs an opportunity to reform not to mention everyone should have healthcare and a home, not a hotel.
All motel rooms have access to a telephone..she could have dialed 911 or the front desk for help.
Thank you, Jesus, for sending someone to help this baby.
I guess Jesus doesn't do that everytime.
lanejohnson752, AMEN 🙏
Thank you JESUS ❤

Oh, Giovanni. Your report was excellent. Keep honing your skills. You have a great future in broadcasting. The comments, otoh, are whacky. How many mothers just having given birth wander outside with a baby attached to them via the umbilical cord? Mom likely doped up and battered. The boyfriend admits being a drug user. She didn't give herself that black eye. Boyfriend wanted for crimes including murder. Ya think that's why they didn't call 911? In her dope haze, she probably wandered outside hoping for help. She couldn't even feel her physical condition--that she was close to passing out. We can only hope the baby isn't addicted to drugs and finds a good home.
That’s the boyfriend not her. When you lose a lot of blood you get dizzy and do things you normally wouldn’t do. She likely passed out from blood loss
I am definitely wondering the same thing - I wonder if the boyfriend did that and that’s why/how she passed out? She definitely did not give herself that black eye! It’s also extremely strange (even for a dr*g user) to walk outside when they’re giving birth?!
If I was to hazard a guess, judging by what is in front of me here and both of their behaviours, the fact that her boyfriend was more concerned with cleaning up than her giving birth, I’m going to go ahead and guess that he got mad that she was getting blood and stuff all over the floor, and most likely sent her out - but not before giving her that black eye!
A lot of people are judging her for lighting up a cig, but to be honest, she might have just been through more than we can imagine. I don’t think she passed out from dr*gs or blood loss, i think she passed out from being beaten.

@@Dee-743 They cannot just “see” for certain if someone is on drugs. There are other medical emergencies that can exhibit similar symptoms. That newborn was not going to make it to a safe haven box.
What a handsome anchorman Love his voice ❤❤
Giovanni? Oh yes, Italian men can be very fine looking.
This is one of those stories that will stay in my head for months. This looks like another poor innocent little baby being brought into the world. It is so sad that some women are so careless about the lives they are creating. There are so many people who would love the opportunity to be parents. The lucky ones are those who can get pregnant with no problems, the babies are the unlucky ones. Years ago I heard that nurses are angels of mercy. This angel nurse was in the right place at the right time. God knows what would have been the outcome if she didn't walk past at that moment.
Glad the baby is safe n well & congratulations on your new job your a natural from UK 🇬🇧 .
*you're or you are
That was almost a dumpster baby. I hope that the baby has a good and normal life away from those two.
I get frustrated when I hear these stories. So many people out there should never have a child, I feel sorry for the baby. Hopefully some nice decent people can adopt the baby. The dad on parole for murder and walking freely. Same thing happened to another guy just a few days ago. How can you be out on parole for murder, makes no sense at all. No wonder this country is messed up, the LAW makers live in lala land and have no clue, it's embarrassing and very sad.
Let's hope she gives that child up for adoption, thank god that Nurse was there.
Dang! They leave the kid in the car to go gamble, run them on the treadmill or let them eat dirt right out of the womb! What a curse! She was probably going to dump the baby and carry on with her wretched life!
I assume you are suggesting the mother was stoned and didn’t even realize she had given birth. And that’s why she was arrested for child endangerment. Because in the story you say, it could have been blood loss in which case you don’t arrest mothers for being confused after birth.poor child has very little chance of doing well with these parents. If in fact, they were that stoned that they didn’t even understand she had given birth.
That's not a mother, that's a monster.
She’s smoking a cigarette. Lmao. Mother of the year award.
Please don't let that baby go back to the birther.
Poor baby thankful for the nurse. 🙏🏻
Enjoyed listening to you Giovanni, very good broadcasting
Im glad BOTH parents will be charged. how horrible the dad allowed this to happen.
Could she have been in shock? The mother that is.
The nurse is a Angel
I have to assume she was positive for drugs or the baby was. Otherwise, they were not clear what caused her arrest for child-endangerment. All of her actions, while not the chest, were not illegal. I hope she will give the baby up.
Poor baby! Hope the child is given to parents that want it.
This poor baby is in 9 kinds of hell with withdrawals right now. 😢 Dear Jesus protect the baby all the days of its life.
