I really appreciate this discussion as a former journalist and media professional. Mike Ryan is right that this RUclips channel and other digital video from LAF has a lot of room to grow. This channel was dormant for 5+ years with limited posts and tiny clips. Now, it's their mainstay distribution channel second to the audio RSS. This channel, given their empirically- proven audience, should be at least 500K subs. Probably 1M+.

I agree with this completely. The show likes Mike Golic today, and he appears to be a cool guy...but Mike and Mike in the morning was exactly the show you're describing. I could not stand Mike Greenberg especially. He wasn't funny, and they knighted him as their main guy. It has nothing to do with caring about radio or not as Dan says. I believe the biggest issue with ESPN radio is the local vs the national broadcast decisions as well as the constant switching of hosts and time slots. It feels like musical chairs at times.
I graduated from Barry University in Miami Shores Florida. I’ve had dinner on Lincoln Road, been around the buzz sounding Dan Le Batard, and all of that have worked with him for amazing talents and kept us engaged in the mornings! You guys are professionals, but just another friendly fan reminder.. Keep what you guys have got & built, & keep building. Very few programs are worth the time investment plus entertaining to watch from beginning to finish.. You've got one of those rare gems here 👏🙌
Keep building? This is the biggest trending topic in sports since the Super Bowl... and in 3 days this video has 184k views. There are completely independent commentators who have never worked for ESPN that have more views discussing this topic. I'm sorry to let you know, since you clearly love the show, but it's not long for this world. He's been doing this for 2 entire years and there are only 144k people who care. Dan, and I'm sure most of his fans, thought he was carrying ESPN, but based on this 144k he was a complete non-factor, and continues to be. And there's no chance he's adding new sports fans with his constant race-baiting. People are sick of it... that's why ESPN's ratings are horrendous.
No way Greenberg thought he was bigger than what he was and broke up Mike and Mike. That was the downfall. He's been at shitty shows ever since and nobody cares what he says lmao
The absolute pinnacle of the ESPN Radio "morning drive" was 1st & Last with Robin Lundberg and Mike Golic, Jr, Mike & Mike, and The Dan LeBatard Show with Stugotz. Greatest 8+ hour stretch of sports and goofball radio ever produced.
The discussion on ESPN and the Morning shows was so interesting. I really enjoyed KJM. I have always been a fan of Max’s since Around the Horn and from Boxing. I am also so impressed by J Will. They should use J Will on College Hoops and NBA.
Max works well with blacc ppl minus Stephen a haha but Thts another story stephen a jus has a huge ego which isn’t wrong but I love kjm man they relate to the ppl the show is clsssic
I personally thought that show was a 0/10. I liked absolutely nothing about it. To put in perspective, Max on “This Just In” I thought was well put together. Preference I suppose? But those two programs aren’t even in the same league
Only 5 years ago I was getting my life together, stuck in a work release facility. My little radio was everything. ESPN radio was nothing to write home about so I was mostly listening to Fox radio. Fox wasn't perfect, but I did enjoy the Odd Couple w Chris Brousard & Rob Parker. Being born in 1991 has developed my mind to be so confused. I saw the end of the analogue era then when I became an adult, suddenly computers were in our pockets. Sometimes I wish I was born a little bit later so I didn't have that nostalgia for the simpler times.
I'm an ESPN LA former listener. I could tell things were going downhill when they cancelled Thompson and Trudelle. Those two had incredible chemistry, they're both still with the station, but we had to listen to Stephen A do a solo show because that's what corporate wanted to push. Sad!
This show sucked. Like why does that jaggoff keep saying "audio" instead of radio. This Libertad guy some days, seemed like, talked about ANYTHING BUT sports. Always all the STUPID 'morning zoo' laughing hysterically at NOTHING.
My God how far ESPN Radio has fallen from the days of Mike and Mike, Colin Cowherd, Scott Van Pelt Show, and of course The Dan Lebatard Show with Stugotz!
You mean the days when no one talked politics on their shows? Yeah, those were the days. Unfortunately Dan, and several other maniacs decided it was more important to push their political agenda than to entertain. And now they're all out of work, and the network is on its last legs... or its last what? 8 or 9 set of legs since they fired everyone else?
I liked Keyshawn, JWill, and Max. I listened to it on my way home pretty often, but the chemistry never quite seemed to be there. I have loved everything Max has done, so I hope he finds a good match. Maybe do a show with Wiley online.
Keyshawn thinks anyone who didn’t play a sport professionally shouldn’t talk about it. Furthermore anyone who didn’t play football professionally shouldn’t be able to have a different opinion than him on football. He’s awful. Even if you think he’s right, it doesn’t make for a good broadcast. Kills the chemistry and discord.
The repetitious nature of ESPN radio through the day (same stories, same talk) barring breaking news is the killer. Podcasts by the right personalities can certainly be better with news updates at the top and bottom of the hour interspersed with fewer shows.
That’s what their listeners wanted. When ESPN tried to lean in on new media and complex content, people wanted them to “stick to sports” and the suits caved to a loud minority.
That is the problem...how many different radio shows do you need to hear talk about some bit of sports news? If you have one big show that gets huge ratings and another that's ok the rest can just skate by with low ratings....did ESPN Radio ever have a big ratings show?
Ironically this was a better show back then. I'd say they're lucky, being that even on the worse days they are still entertaining. I really wish people would show up. Like why hire new members just so they get air time for a week or two and then never show again?
David is the new Michael from the Office. He's talking shit about the company that he chose to sign with to build his brand and reinvent himself. Mike nailed it. The show has really been rolling!

Mike talks of how ESPN screwed up with Podcasts with them, the _real_ screw up was Bill Simmons. ESPN was on the ground floor of the entire Podcast revolution with by all accounts the 2nd biggest podcaster in the world and they had zero clue how to monetize it, let alone capitalize on it. Even with his forced time off and basically starting over again, in 2020 Spotify paid just shy of 200M for 51% of the Ringer, but really it's the Podcast network they were after. When Adam Carrolla can just guest star on a few pods and see the potential and create his own entire network and generate more revenue than ESPN Radio it just shows how ass backwards ESPN was dropping the ball.
@dannytallmage2409 i mean, they have a market cap of 32 billion, so if your take is ESPN was better at monetizing podcasts, you're definitely zagging from everyone else who has an opinion on this. But all the power to you.
@dannytallmage2409 but they're talking about how poorly ESPN is run. Even if Spotify overpaid for the Ringer by 50M, that means it was still worth nearly 280M, and ESPN let Simmons walk for nothing. They let McAfee walk, then paid him millions to return. They let Lebatard and company walk with their entire library according to Ruiz for nothing. They were light years behind on where the market was going thinking terrestrial radio was still important and now they're basically scuttling it entirely because it's not profitable.
Please do not draw the obvious correlation of people like Dan forcing lefty politics onto the network, and the exact moment the network headed downhill. Pretend it's not happening. If you ever listened to that morning show it was just keyshawn and J Will disagreeing and arguing with Max about literally everything. Max is way too smart for guys like that
Max’s problem is he thinks he the smartest person in the room at all times and usually he is. He has learned how to let other talk, get to their conclusions and then reply. Just as he was with Marcellus WAY back in LA he has to be correct. He needs to do another one man show like Cowherd does, that’s his strong suit. His baseball and boxing are to tops for me. I've gotta say, ESPN WI is a really great radio network. They have a load of great local shows but the station is owned by Good Karma Brands and I believe they simply license out the name ESPN. That being said, they regularly get national ESPN talent to appear on the local shows, and the local hosts at times are given fill-in spots on the national shows. They also rip-off you guys at every friggin turn and I feel like they should be paying you guys for all the bits they steal.
I disagree with Dan. KJM was the best show in the lineup on the main channel, even more so than FT most days and imo they had great chemistry. In fact it is the closest thing to old school DLS left at ESPN since Pablo is no longer working on Debatable. I'm sad to see them cancelled because imo Max was the reason the show felt genuine and there were so many times on rejoins where they didnt even talk about sports. And they had a REAL connection with call in listeners. I never watched that show prior to that other no name host they started with.
Jkm was an okay show. Not the best but not the worst. The problem is ESPN holding onto names like the Greenberg Show where Greenberg is never the actual host of his own show.
The Lebatard Show was at its best when they were strictly radio before ESPN when they were on 790 the ticket. A local or "homegrown" show ( like Pat McAfee) usually suffers because the identity of their shows are watered down to appease corporate agenda. Money is always attractive but at the cost of compromise is not worth it.
Pet peeve: Can we stop describing people as always "consuming content"? People listen to the radio. They want to hear things, not consume content, whatever the hell that is.
Unfortunately producing content is the same as creating a product. Everything is a commodity for people tobuy. It's all about marketing consumption and selling
It's another dumb buzzphrase fabricated by the misanthropic aspies in the tech sector who've managed to hijack every industry in the country and make them all worse.
ESPN morning radio was largely uninspired since Mike and Mike ended. ESPN thought they could throw in any random person and make a show called "[Last name], [Last name], and [Last name]" in an era where now people can on demand go find the people they actually give a shit about and listen to them instead.
“You’re growing it right now.” - Mike Ryan This show (and it’s team - shout to Dan) has been genuinely genius level since I first started listening almost everyday 10-11 years ago. KJM was awesome. I’m not sure how ESPN failed with radio. Some of the more popular podcast are just that person’s radio show or television show put out in podcast form. I love listening to talk radio, that’s why I enjoy a podcast. Maybe if major companies gave the talent more freedom, it would be a success.
They forced politics into all of their shows. Everything became a discussion of sex or race, and for some reason they felt the need to start talking about Presidents and policing after having never once done so in the past. They spit in the face of their core audience and attempted to shame them into following their political ideology. People don't like being preached too... especially when they were just trying to listen to sports talk. The second they started talking politics the ratings started dropping, and the more they talk about them the more they drop.
Used to be a great lineup. Starting with Mike & Mike. Then onto Cowherd. Then Scott Van Pelt and Rusillo. LeBatard was a great part of that as well, but on the other ESPN channel. Now it kinda sucks…which is why Undisputed took off. Sidenote: I miss the original SportsNation.

Mike Ryan mentioned that ESPN punted on its radio shows and podcasts, which is an embarrassment. I ask, is it an really an embarrassment or an adjustment to the times? I believe when you look at the current radio and podcast landscape, one is possibly on its death bed, with the other being exploited in every possible fashion. At some point, radio may completely die out and podcasting will fall right along. I don't want to give ESPN credit, as I do believe they sold themselves to the First Take format and mindset that they tripped over, but you have to give credit to them for looking at what Pat Mcafee is doing and jumping aboard that money train. With that said, it's a damn shame we lost the days of good radio, from Dan LeBatard, Mike and Mike and the unsung hero Freddie Coleman. Back when good content was just a standard, not a desire.
Keyshawn, JWill & Max was my morning tune-in here in LA. Keyshawn's LA connections gave the show a flavor I enjoyed, along with the football-basketball dynamic between he & JWill. I guess this wasn't playing well across the rest of the country, but Disney is bleeding money and is desperate to cut costs. For reference I am one of those 'older listeners' (Boomer). I listen to podcasts, but still like my AM radio.

And many of them are old farts
The biggest issue for me is that they hire insufferable narcissistic pricks with egos too big for the same room.

I'm an ESPN LA former listener. I could tell things were going downhill when they cancelled Thompson and Trudelle. Those two had incredible chemistry, they're both still with the station, but we had to listen to Stephen A do a solo show because that's what corporate wanted to push. Sad!

Keyshawn thinks anyone who didn’t play a sport professionally shouldn’t talk about it. Furthermore anyone who didn’t play football professionally shouldn’t be able to have a different opinion than him on football.

Too political. Max virtue signaling got old quickly.
@kevinc8955 Yeah, Keyshawn was my main issue with the show.
Miss those days. Mike and Mike, Lebatard show then SVP and Russillo. Didn’t listen to Cowherd

Ironically this was a better show back then. I'd say they're lucky, being that even on the worse days they are still entertaining. I really wish people would show up. Like why hire new members just so they get air time for a week or two and then never show again?
Because Dan can't say no to anyone. That's why they need Samson and foxworth to make the hard decisions.

Even when Lebatard tried to be the wokist guy in the room he still gets shown the door.
how the fk could a show with lebatard and racist bomani jones even exist? that's the world we live in
Angry palebro is angry. Hates liberalism, yet whines just like a liberal. Well done.
Original sports nation was great
I was a huge ESPN Radio listener years ago. Loved your show, His & Hers and Cowherd. Those were the days
Another fan referencing the days before every topic was about race or sex... yet Dan is king of the race-baiters, and makes every other topic about race. This is a guy whose father had to escape a communist nation, and lived a wonderful life here in America... but his son is desperate to turn this into a communist country.
Mike and Mike, SVP and Russilo, Cowherd . lineup was incredible. go woke go broke
Great break down i used to watch you guys everyday on espn. Still catch you guys pretty often thanks for the great show
Keyshawn was horrible and I don’t wana hear J will talk about football ever again it was time for a reset
The cause, WFAN! Espn can't compete.
ESPN Radio in NYC is LIT, Dave and Rich, Greeny, Bart and Honn and The Michael Kay Show...We good up here
Keyshawn, JWill & Max was my morning tune-in here in LA.
I turned in some highlights a few months back and it was after 5 mins of still talking about what Keyshawn cooked I was out.
Thank you for covering the shop talk with ESPN and the radio industry. Y’all look so prescient right now having jumped ship and built this before that happened for yourselves. I hope everyone involved feels proud of making that decision despite all of the challenges and additional work I’m sure it’s brought on. Very cool to watch Mike flex his producer knowledge and experience, With McAfee, giving up his outsiders throne to to go corporate y’all might end up catching them as the sports people for the alternative crowd. Rooting for the pirates to make it happen!!
Mike showed the real reason that he's there right then.
Loved KJM. I watched on ESPNU early in the morning. In Dallas and ESPN cut their radio station here months ago, so not surprising. Top 5 media market that doesn’t have an ESPN radio channel. Radio has been dead at ESPN
I haven't turned on ESPN radio since Lebatard left. Bomani Jones and Dominique are the only voices there i seek out, and i get them on Google podcasts.
