I can imagine. I'm a modeler and texture artist and occasionally do lighting. Digital artists spend hours upon hours tweaking and perfecting our work. Metro was made by a team who clearly loved their work and had great passion for the project. In my personal work, I'm used to using ray tracing and GI in VRay renders which take a very long time to calculate (two hours for my last project) and that was just for a still image. I never thought we'd get real-time light bounce like this. The quality is going to rival pre-rendered cinematics very soon.
@Qimodis not only the graphics, even the world building was outstanding, you could feel despair, dread, hopeless by just looking at what was left from the environment after the war, not to mention Dead city and Panthom City, metro games are the personification of the world "Apocalypse", not to mention the mutants being the only species, besides the dark ones, to be able to live on those conditions

This really shows as well how much faster development can happen for all games. Baked ray traced shadows work for most games that don't have a day night cycle and create amazing lighting.
I dont think it will be easier to make beautiful realistic lighting. The thing with reflected light taking colour of the object will mess up colour tones of other objects. It is probably a b to balance it.
@@tiortedrootsky this happens in real life as well, and the human visual perception is pretty good at handling this, so it shouldn't be much of an issue

Maybe they'll figure out the right way to limit tinting and such and it will actually be positive thing over all.
I'm really looking forward to seeing how they handled the PS5/Series X versions. They promised a lot in their spec sheet, almost to the point it sounds too good to be true. I believe they stated native 4k 60fps with all RT on aside from reflections. I played some of the game on the PS4 Pro and I just couldn't get used to the weird input delay. It's the only AAA FPS game I've played that had such a bad input delay, hopefully that won't be a problem with the next gen ports. Fine aiming was impossible on consoles, no idea if they ever fixed it because I ended up playing on PC instead.
@@arbiter- They never said native 4k, just 4k60. It will probably be DRS and looking at the 6800XT perfomance, I'm guessing it will be 1440p upscaled and lower RT quality. Which I think is fine and great to see the devs target 60 FPS.
Yeah that looked dramatically better. But the standard shadows just seem to be a bit poor. I've seen plenty of non RT games shade and shadow things correctly in scenes like that. Part of the enhancement seems to be dramatic in general just because of the originals substandard efforts. Mainly in darker areas where it just does look too dark. Outdoor or bright areas don't suffer as much at all.
@@Arcona You're going to have to give some examples because the exact things he's talking about are extremely common across many many games where things just don't look grounded due to shadowing.

Ray Tracing and DLSS, the two most important new tech features in a decade (I think). Finally, a game that seems to implement it not just good looking, but in a way mortals can run it.
I think it is really lame that you have to use DLSS if you want to play with Ray Tracing. A desktop 3090 is still not strong enough for Ray Tracing natively at 4K resolution. Nvidia released this technology way too early. Maybe the 4000 series cards might just be able to game at 4K RTX without a performance hit and without DLSS crap.
@@cemsengul16 this has to be one of the dumbest comments I've read in a while. This is how technology works. You put out something new, this gives devs the opportunity to work with it and build better software for it. And it slowly gets better over time, both the hardware and the software improve. Getting raytracing to run in a performant way does not only depend on the hardware but also more efficient software. Also, native 4k rendering is obsolete, there is no reason not to use DLSS at least in quality mode as its actually looks better than native rendering in many instances.
@@cemsengul16 This game proves beyond a doubt that Nvidia DIDN'T release this tech too early. The visual upgrade provided by RT in this game is so huge, there's really no argument here. it actually does need that though because the engine only supports 4 active light sources casting shadows at the same time. So Light sources outside of this wont cast shadows. With there being so many light sources in the game(torches, lamps, windows ect.) it is so apparent oce you notice it. We've all been trained to see very two-dimensional shadows as "correct" in games. Now that global illumination and shadows are being fully Ray Traced, we have to literally retrain ourselves to see this as the correct lighting model. Artists have gotten quite good at faking local lights in a scene, so our eyes tell us that it's all prerendered and drawn by an asset artist. But once you realize that it's all being calculated in real time, it changes everything. It looks so good, that our eyes tell us that it looks weird. How strange is that?

@@termitreter6545 It seems that you do not understand the point of this, RT GI is a game changer since with this technology the light and its effects are generated in real time in a physically correct way, thus avoiding that the developers spend time simulating this kind of lighting, making the development easier and occupying the time in other sections.
@@secoTheSonicFan This doesnt really save ressources for devs. If you go full raytrace rendering, then theres some stuff devs dont have to do anymore, but we're a decade away from that.
@@jerchongkong5387 You mean this? I very much doubt that this global illumination stuff saves much time at all. This kind of "raytracing" is extremely limited, and has to be specifically set up by the devs. If this was actually "physically correct", then no machine could run it. Not to mention, do you know how much time devs actually spend on optimizing games to look nice and run well on your PC? This type of RT makes most of that effort moot, because it takes a huge amount of ressources for little gain. For now, real time raytracing is a gimmick. @@BH-ln5pt Im looking at this vid and the comparision pics, and its really not a big difference. Which hardly even bothers me; considering those games look great either way.
When I played through the enhanced edition I found that I needed to turn down the brightness a lot to maintain the intended dark style to most of the indoor areas. That seemed to work pretty well without ruining brighter scenes.
It's just different. The scenes that should be dark realistically, are still dark. It's just that the game wasn't originally made with this in mind. So the distribution of light sources is sometimes not adiquate for these scenes.

I just hope the other alternatives are good enough to compete in order to keep pushing each others implementation to be better & better. Although on innovating DLSS, Nvidia did not disappoint even without much competition. 1.0 was pretty "meh" in quality though but they could've just stopped at 1.9 with a good enough. Instead they went ahead with 2.0 & 2.1 and decoupled it from system load to be used wherever the user wants (even low/very low settings).

The TF2 medic received a visual makeover :D
Yeah that looked dramatically better. But the standard shadows just seem to be a bit poor. I've seen plenty of non RT games shade and shadow things correctly in scenes like that. Part of the enhancement seems to be dramatic in general just because of the originals substandard efforts. Mainly in darker areas where it just does look too dark. Outdoor or bright areas don't suffer as much at all.

Feels like the 2000s again where there were huge leaps in graphical technology in short periods of time
Ray Kurzweil calls that an s-curve of progress, if his predictions are accurate (supposedly 86% accurate thus far) these will happen more and more where you will have lulls and then larger and larger leaps in progress each time.

We've all been trained to see very two-dimensional shadows as "correct" in games. Now that global illumination and shadows are being fully Ray Traced, we have to literally retrain ourselves to see this as the correct lighting model. @@BH-ln5pt Im looking at this vid and the comparision pics, and its really not a big difference. Frankly, the most improved scenes look better because they changed the visual direction, and not because of the tech.

I am blown away that the 2060 looks so good with this. My 2060 super will finally shine lol. I just bought the entire series on steam. Excited for this!
Im very happy for you Houdini. I played through them and I had such a fun experience. Your 2060s will be more then great for these games. Enjoy :D
(Happy 2060 noises)
I completed the game with RT Ultra and everything else turned on with a RTX 2060 @ 1440p. Some areas the FPS would drop but mostly smooth as silk.
This is a huge step forwards in real time rendering history! Great video 👍
The skull noise is really noticeable... it looks like moving water reflections.
Don't think that's happening in game
I wonder if a film grain effect could mask that well enough, even if I know it's not everyone cup of tea, it would at least make the whole image more consistent.
As a 3D artist: I'm stunned. This looks like an octrane render now thanks to the multi bounces. Stunning.
Download the latest version of Unreal editor (if you have a rtx card) and play around with real time ray tracing! It's so amazing!
With a ton of noise and typical temporal artifacts. Aight
@@branchprediction9923 which you won't notice during gameplay.
@@gavinderulo12 i do
@@branchprediction9923 so you would rather have rasterized lighting with way more artifacts and light bleed instead?
This is why I love this channel the most.
This is honestly the first RT implementation that gives a big enough visual improvement to make RT worthwhile for me.
Looking at this now, I wish 4A would go back and add DLLS 3.5, de-noiser would fix clarity and frame generation would be a nice boost.
Okay. I get it now. I haven't seen a justified implementation of Ray tracing since it became a thing, but holy shit this looks absolutely incredible. Completely transforms the atmosphere.
Kudos to the devs for putting in the passion to make this a reality. Maybe one day I'll be able to soak this in for myself. Wow.
Euhm.... Control?
@@uccarpiyuz I was just going to post this. Control's implementation was the first real "Oh damn, this is going to change everything" moment for me with RT.
I have been totally behind it since I found out about it two years ago. Playing RDR 2 currently, and often in shaded areas and indoor areas, the lighting looks quite video gamey, and that can only be solved with ray tracing.
@@akashmakkar7187 i really want them to add DLSS and ray tracing to RDR2. would make the game so much more playable for the rtx 2060
@@uccarpiyuz Ahhh yes, I do remember seeing some jaw-dropping visuals there. Right. This implementation though shows how crazy photo realistic they can get. Like the tiny little things.
Now the game looks like a Love death & robots animation running in real time! how far we've come…
Fitting youre saying that cause season 2 is dropping soon
Which episode did it remind you off of?
@@ptrcrispy I didn't know it was dropping soon. You just made me happy brother. Cheers
LDAR is so good! Can’t wait for season 2
@@ptrcrispy reminded me a lot of the episode The Secret War, because of the game taking place in a post apocalyptic russia with creepy creatures
There's still lots of downsides... We're sadly still pretty far away from a quality and full feature raytraced game.
I am so excited, I played metro when it released back in late 2019 and have over 200 hours in it, I absolutely love the way it looks, its gorgeous as hell, and to see a more fleshed out version of RT being implemented into it? I'm gonna put another hundred hours into metro when it releases.
Its great that you were able to show how it affects the workflow for the devs, they must be so happy now. You can just play around with lights and objects and everything updates realistically and dynamically in real time. Can't wait for this to be standard in all game dev.
So far this has been the first time I have seen Raytracing in action for a game and thought, "I need this" as now I can actually see significant differences and how this RT Tech should be implemented.
I really enjoyed it on Exodus. Much like VR it really is something that needs to be experienced directly. RUclips compression dumbs down the vibrancy of RTX a lot.
Damn... Exodus came out two years ago? Loved the game. I replay it every few months just for the graphics.
I clicked on this video only expecting to watch for a few minutes, 5 minutes later, I had watched the whole thing. This was insanely interesting. Can't wait to try it myself.
How did you watch 40:45 minutes of content in 5 minutes? 😂
@@ux2099 that's the joke. I only intended to watch the video for 5 minutes or so, but the content was so interesting that the 40 minutes seemed to fly by in a span of only 5 minutes.
This is what you were teasing in the Weekly! Awesome :)
Seeing as your first ray tracing vid on Metro Exodus was the first DF vid I ever watched, this vid came as a highly appreciated surprise. Sehr gut
One of my favourite games of all time. Immersive gameplay, beautiful graphics and art design, emotional story, rewarding exploration, thoughtful combat and fantastic world design (it feels truly alive). I can't wait to replay it again once I get an RTX card. Also I hope they adjust the sensitivity curve and deadzone values for controllers.
This is what I wanted to see. Now we are ready for Ray Tracing.
Just imagine what the future of VR games could be like with this level of technology and even more advanced RT. Imagine what The Elder Scrolls 6 or GTA6 or Metro 4 could look like in VR. I would never want to leave those worlds if they looked as good as this and they will look even better than this a few years down the line.....a man can dream.
Can't wait for this to come out so I can play it on RUclips. My thanks to Nvidia, scalpers and miners all-over the world!
@some dude shit i ordered it 30min to 1 hour after launch and i got it in rhe end of november rip mate
@Top Noodle Im from Norway and i got it under msrp with a 10% off coupon
The work they've put into this enhanced edition is truly next level. Top tier devs.
Thank you for showing performance on lower end RTX cards. Mine is a 2070 and it seems like most DF videos are done with much much higher end GPUs, especially the 3080 and obviously I can't get anywhere near those settings. So this specifically is VERY helpful. I've also used recommended settings on many other games and noticed greatly improved performance without noticeable visual downgrades.
Oh, and this game looks absolutely amazing. Phenomenal.
"Its so amazing!"

This is absolutely mind-blowing! Very interested to see how the console version turns out

I'm exicted for Ray tracing in games. It's definitely the future. And as with everything else, soon enough ray tracing will be the norm and everyone will have access to it at an affordable price.
@@aweigh1010 Then stay and stick to your CSGO and Fortnite graphics forever. In the next decades almost everyone will own a raytracing compatible card. This is definetly the future and this video alone proves it can be. Its just a matter of time until we see only Raytracing games.

Hopefully the new patreon will be able to support such content more often.
Ah man, just started this game up again and made it to the desert level. Guess I'm shelving it again until the EE comes out. It looks insane. Hopefully my save game will still work.
Was wondering the same and found this in the FAQ on their website:
"Will my saves carry over?
Epic - Both versions share the same save game directory. Chapter saves will transfer over, but progress inside of a level remains with the version it was created on.
Steam - Both versions share the same save game directory. Chapter saves will transfer over, but progress inside of a level remains with the version it was created on.
GOG - Both versions share the same save game directory. Chapter saves will transfer over, but progress inside of a level remains with the version it was created on.
Microsoft Store - We are unable to officially support save transfers on the Microsoft Store platform as save files are encrypted in their cloud solution per-product.
NOTE: We realize that some players can’t/don’t want to carry over their previous progress, but also might want to access later levels directly. We added a Chapter Unlock feature to ALL PC Enhanced versions, as well as Gen9 console versions, for players who do not want to play through again, but want to see a particular level with the new features. This provides a default set of equipment and resources at the start of the selected chapter. Achievements are turned off for the save slot when the unlock button is pressed. However we highly recommend you play through again, to get the best experience, and maybe a different ending."
So probably best to finish the level you're in and stop playing, or if you've just started the level, stop playing until may 6th. That's what I'm gonna do since I just started the deserl level as well. Also noteworthy: it's another 80 GB download (including DLC).

I think this game really shows what is possible when the whole art direction is re-thought with raytracing in mind. A really great showcase of the future. Some other comment mentioned how RTGI that sophisticated looks rather off, because we're used to what baked lighting looks like from all those years and I think they're right. In any case, I'm playing this game on a 10600K with an RTX 3070 OC-ed with the following settings at a locked 4K60fps, with dips down to 40 in lush vegetation: Ultra Preset/Normal RT/Raytraced Reflections/Tesselation, PhysX & HDR on/VRS Off/DLSS Balanced. I think Alex's settings will never dip below 60, but I have yet to encounter dips like I've seen them in the benchmark (maybe when I actually visit the Taiga region I will rethink these settings) and I made the tradeoff to see all the next-gen features for the price of some frames in certain situations, which is still considered a technically playable experience by most people .
So basically this looks like that pre rendered sequence that was played in announcements trailer in 2017!!! Super cool

@@aweigh1010 of course. I’m just interested in how the ability to fully adopt ray tracing can inspire their future work.
@@aweigh1010 Fully adopting ray tracing in more games will create demand. Demand creates supply. Supply drives down the cost. This is a similar situation to when gpus first entered the market. Sure you could render the game through software on the cpu but hardware acceleration on a gpu was so much better. We are in a transition period. In ten years this will be standard on all graphics cards.
@@sptriple2x903 Hopefully less than 10 years.
@@sptriple2x903 > Demand creates supply.
Hahahahahahaha. I get what you mean, and I do agree for the most part. But that's just a really funny thing to say about GPUs in 2021. If demand truly created supply, we wouldn't be talking about an epidemic anymore. We'd be talking about "The Great GPU Flood", with people being dragged away in the streets when surge tides of GPUs barrel through neighborhoods, destroying everything that stands in their way.
We'd be sitting around captured RTX 3090s, trying to stay warm at night. Scared, not knowing when the next RX 6800 XT storm might occur. The older folks would tell the kids stories about the mythical RTX 3080 Ti 20GB that could kill you before you could shout "RTX OFF" to scare it away. Those would be dark, yet beautifully lit, times...
