I found your channel today. I appreciate the way you approach reviews. Very factual and meaningful, instead commercial as we see many times in other channels. Thanks a lot. Stay the course.
One of the things I was thinking about is the increased blind spot when using the original battery and the camera being offset to the left with the core on its right, versus the vertical battery making everything much more in-line, and only the thickness of the 360 mod acting as a blind spot. I'm disappointed to see that there's no different stitching mode for the vertical battery mod, as that would really help out stitching lines around the camera.
Interesting accessory. Once I have more time on the system I might be interested in testing the vertical battery. I do think in this first revision it needs some updates, particularly in the being full functional (USB mic, etc) as with standard battery. The system is definitely designed for growth.
If this vertical case were manufactured in a way that would allow my lens guard kit to be installed, this new case def would be a winner. Hopefully the company makes some modifications in an updated version.
Yes I am considering getting this battery and the bumper. The one thing that is holding me back at the moment is that it is not working with a microphone.......yet. It they gets some updates/upgrades later on then I will absolutely buy it. 😃
I love the one r just like it is. The red battery just looks incredible.... The bigger battery, that is black is also a good look, but it is more like a go pro.... And I just prefer it's own personality, as it comes originally.... It's a beauty and....a beast!
Love the idea, but the lack of lens guard is the main dealbreaker for me. Second one is the lack of native waterproofing when using this vertical mode. These were the two main things combined that made me upgrade from the OneX to the OneR in the first place.
Thanks for the review. Too bad the USB port doesn’t recognise the external mic adaptor. Perhaps there would be a better vertical bumper in the future made by insta360 or a third party. I hope someone can design a better case or bumper for quicker release.

Great mod, i am looking forward for more testing. Keep up the testing. i am still sticking with my One X for now, not upgrading till i see what i will like to upgrade to.
Hi again and thanks for another nice video. Can't find this battery on the official insta360 site, can you please provide us a link where it can be bought? Thank you! 😊
Have you tried the Ulanzi C-ONE R Aluminum Alloy Camera Cage yet? The square go pro mount ensures it can be locked vertical to avoid any unfortunate tilting - a really neat solution
Thing that interested me with the one r is when they mention 3d.. i was hoping for a 3d effect photo similar to ones on certain camera phones to enhance on to the effect 3d facebook creates. I felt do much more could have been done to this camera and that it was pushed out too fast when one x still has tons of more life. I just haven't been wowed by the 360 r as the one x was really hard to top.
TIP OF THE DAY SOLUTION: When your One R over heats and needs resetting, instead of removing the battery, hold down the power button for approx 15 seconds to restart. No more having to remove the case and whatnot.
Hi Rich, thanks for testing this, i'm looking at getting this as i think it will be good for indoor vr and 360 photo tours. As for the display not rotating it doesnt when you use the normal set up, only the icons move around which i thought was a bit strange.
Thanks for a great video! I bought this battery and will be testing it for some longer recordings of my son's wedding. I needed the longer runtime so was forced to buy it without the bumper as it was out of stock. Have you heard if the bumper might be available separately later?
Yes it should be - also ulanzi are bringing out a metal cage soon as well - the boosted battery has the best run time at 144 minutes ruclips.net/video/xUuvB-d5Igk/видео.html
Are you sure it's the battery overheating? I've done many tests on the 1 inch version and it also shuts quite often. With no battery plugged in it will stay on about 35 minutes. With a battery plugged in I can get almost 60minutes. After adding a heat sink to the main unit It will run until the battery dies, or if plugged in I get about 90 minutes before shutting off.
I see them as very different cameras to be honest - I made a couple of videos here ruclips.net/video/WvD-QxzuO6Q/видео.html and this one ruclips.net/video/sviAHnG1UL8/видео.html
Love your videos you just got a new subscriber!!! Had a question...With this vertical setup are you still able to use the bullet time stick to get footage?
I haven’t tried it on time lapse shots - I do t think it will be because it’s not continuously running - good question, let me know if you do any tests
Great video! I don’t see a benefit for me to get the vertical battery or to use it vertically at all. Does it help with posting to social media such as the video is already in the right format to view videos on your phone full screen vertically?
Great review, as usual. I think I'll wait a bit and see if they fix some of those issues with a firmware update. I really don't understand why Insta360 thought that a clunky Go Pro mount was preferable to a simple, standard screw thread...especially in a camera that relies on the selfie stick being perfectly perpendicular to the lens axis in order to remain invisible..This battery suggests that the modular idea is still a work in progress; maybe we'll get the standard batteries and boosted battery with screw threads at some point. Why not a screw-in Go Pro mount instead of the other way round?
Hello , i was waiting all day for this video . It’s worth waiting . Thanks for this review . You said that is not possible to add guard lenses , that is very good to know . It seems a good option, "BUT".... for all those things mentioned near the end, can see where it might make it a definite "no-go" for many. Take care, be well & enjoy!!
Thanks for the comment - no this was not a sponsored video - I don’t think my channel is big enough for a sponsor - this may change as my channel gets bigger. All of the camera gear and accessories I had to buy myself. Thanks for watching.
Great review as always Rich!! Even with all the magic the 1R can do, I play with my 1X more.. the sleek 1X is the best design with some flaws... hoping this upright design will make me use it more.
Question. Is it possible for insta360 to make a firmware update later on so that this new camera can film in slowmotion? Or is that impossible because of the lens?
Nice video, as usual ;) one question: don't you think it could be brilliant to have classic setup (with the original red battery) and use it in vertical position with a new bracket? Maybe there was no need to add new battery and bracket, just bracket 🤔
Hey Rich (Eat Sleep 360) I’ve just received my vertical battery from Insta but I’m suspecting it’s faulty as it doesn’t power the camera when connected. I can charge it, however I can’t eliminate the possibility that it could be the camera connection. I don’t have access to another RS to check. Any ideas on way forward, if I sent it to you would you be able to take a look? Insta have been very frustrating to deal with to the point of me giving up with them. Cheers 👍🏼
I like it for 360 shots more as well...but, I opt for my One R, because it just has more capabilities with its modules. I travel a lot. And for my purposes, it’s not worth it to carry both. But when I’m home and ONLY doing a 360 shot, deffo like my One X.
I got a couple vertical batteries, but I'm still waiting for my bumper to come in. You think it's stable enough for a simple walk-around with a selfie stick?
Disabling the USBC port so no external audio can be used ruins it for me. I guess for Instagram people that just want short clips with music overplayed will probably like it though, so it makes sense.
Hi everyone, I am creating virtual tours using the one R. I am often facing stitching problems, and it takes me hours on photoshop to clean the images. Any idea for me to improve that and save time? Could be a better camera? Many thanks forward
Sad that even with an "upgraded" battery, the recording time is only about 1hr and the device becomes too hot to handle. So it seems that if you need to continuously record for 2 to 3 hrs, like a bike ride, swapping in extra spare batteries as needed, the device would have simply burned up and become unusable. Time to explore the gopro max.
If you are using the camera solely for action sports I’d say test out the GoPro max. It’s definitely more rugged and doesn’t have overheating issues. I really wish there was another camera that combined the pro of both the One R and The Max.
sorry, just found the answer, The Vertical battery is 1190mah, and regular extended is 2380 mah. So it seems for the money the regular extended is a better deal for having more capacity in mah..just my two cents. :-)
Could be a number of things - if editing in studio make sure you’re not using the LRV files as these are low res files. In the app make sure you are shooting with vivid colour profile and export using maximum bit rate. You can export at a higher resolution from the story editor for some reason. Also make sure you aren’t judging the image based on the app preview image especially if using WiFi - the exported image is higher quality.

Good review Rich! I like the vertical setup especially because of the 1/4” thread at the bottom of the battery.
Keen to hear what they actually did in firmware to address the overheating issues. I hope it’s not just them turning off the temperature sensors.
Yes, I’ll soon tell when I test it I think as it was burning hot before

It is expensive and the dive case is also an additional cost
There’s actually a waterproofing cage/bumper by ulanzi. I like how the One R is so versatile. I may get it still over the X2.
