Opinels, damn near perfect knife in my opinion. Lightweight, sharp, durable, extremely durable lock, good ergonomics, one handed opening( if you get creative), and come in various sizes and colors, and best of all, cheap. I wish I found this knife before I blew $100+ on knives.
At first i was reluctant to buy an opinel, cause here in Spain we have a lot of good cutlery at very affordable prices. Finally i got a carbón #8 and i liked it very much, but soon it broke on my hands just whittling a piece of elm wood. Years later i found in an old hardware store a cabon #12 opinel, and gave it a 2nd opportunity cause the blade was fairly thick and i thought it won't break easy, it restored my faith in Opinels and love that sharp big blade. Since then i've bought 4 more carbón #12 to gift them to my sons and relatives... Is one of my most used blades at home and outdoors.
The first time I saw an Opinel I was a kid. My friend had the smallest one and it was the sharpest knife out of any of the knives that my friends carried. I've got some really nice knives in my collection but I use my #8 the most. Partly because I wouldn't be very upset if I broke it but more so, it gets the job done! And keep the experience ones in good shape!
I went to the factory in France one year to see them being made, it's really interesting and has a rich history, you should check it out if your ever over there
I have the #6 through #12 and I love them all. You are right the #12 is a beast, I use it mostly in the garden to harvest vegetables and to prune plants.cuts like a champ.
Jaime Gonzalez they go #2 thru #12 skipping #11. #1 was for cleaning pipes and was discontinued long ago. The #11 was considered redundant as the #10 is quite large and the 12 is a beast. They also make a novelty #13 that is machete sized. The #8 is the most popular and comes in different handle colors and materials, though I prefer the #9 cause I have very large hands
@@eskimoquinn1062 I agree...everyone traditionally recommends the Nō8 But I have man size hands and prefer the Nō9 for best hand feel. Or the Nō7 is more jeans pocket friendly, and perfectly usable for modest tasks using two fingers n thumb.
I remember visiting 3 shops in Austria while I was touring with a band, and they all had Opinel's but they were all stamped Inox, too bad they didnt had any carbon ones. i love these knives, so simple and organic.
I've been buying them when I visit France for years. It's funny how that in the US most haven't heard of them but in France, every single convenience store you go in carries at least 4 sizes from 6 to 10. I love mine. I have both Carbone and Inox and have never had a problem with either. The carbone clearly takes and holds an edge better but the Inox is just as usable and quite good.
for those with restrictive locking laws, if you lock the knife when closed, then forcibly open the knife, the lock should pop off, and can easily be replaced if needs be
I like how Opies are ground to have a really tiny secondary bevel. Make 'em slice good and makes 'em extra easy to re-sharpen, especially the Carbone ones! The Carbone ones are XC-90 which is pretty much identical to 1095 so it's pretty good. I imagine there are quite a few younger guys without any experience with straight low alloy carbon steel. So one of these would be a good introduction.
Just found a No 7 in a suede sheath in our kitchen everything drawer. Asked my wife where it came from and she had no idea. Cool little knife so I thought I’d research it. Thanks for the info. It’s going in my bug out bag or I may carry it for a while.
Got a No8 Carbon many years ago and didn't have great expectations. It impressed me so much I bought another (identical) as a backup, but have yet to use it because the original is still going strong. Now I've just ordered a No12 Slimline (only made in stainless, but it'll do) for fishing - can't wait!
Yesterday I got a knife at an antique shop, its one of those that is a folder, but even when folded still has blade sticking out, it has a leather sheath, but when you open it the blade is like a foot long, its almost like a safty folder, but without the safety.
I recently bought the Opinel 6 (which I believe is the one of yours without markings) in carbon steel and also a walnut and oak handled one in stainless and neither the oak or the walnut handled versions had any markings. However, the beech handled carbon version did.
I like how they look without the logo on the handle and I did not know that the smallest ones were slip joints. I gotta buy one of the small ones now lol.
***** Yes, slipjoints are non locking folders under spring tension, opinels are all friction folders with some having a ring lock and the smaller ones being exclusively friction folders.
Own 2 of these purchased in the early70's I think...one has spent its life as a utility blade in my in house tool box and the other in the garage sticking in a block of cedar on my work bench..always handy...easy to sharpen...lots of patina..
I've owned a whole bunch of knives but Opinels were the ones that finally stuck. I've been carrying a no. 9 I bought used (because I prefer the ones that say Opinel France on the blade) and I've been carrying it for over two years now. It's aged so much it looks like it could be 100 years old. I can't recommend them enough.
I bought an opinel to replace my karambit I would EDC because the karambit had a broken tip. The opinel is one of the sharpest knives I own. Easy to touch up, holds an amazing edge, and slices through anything like butter. for $40NZ it's an amazing buy.
I absolutely love my Opinel! I forced a patina on mine using mustard & got some really nice tiger stripes on it! You can get the carbon blades very, very sharp with little work. As you said, a must have in any collection!
I had my no6 carbon in my pocket for so long the logo has 99% worn off. Your one without the logo print must have slipped through QC. Definitely keep it! Not many would have made it out. 😊🇦🇺👍🏻
Iv been wanting on .so they had some at a sporting goods store. They had 6,8 and 10 in stainless. So i got the 8 im happy withvit i will maybe get another size next time im there.
+aHigher Power Beechwood is cheap (especially for them obtaining 95% of it locally). Strong for how light it is. Resistant to cracking from becoming moisturized and drying out. Non-Corrosive to Steel. And can be easily worked (carving, sanding, staining ect.) It's simply the best material option for the knife design. Best for them because they can make a lot of them easily, while keeping the cost down. And best for you because it requires the least amount of maintenance, while being the most easily modifiable after market (i.e. you can easily change the look of it within reason without risking its structural integrity, in order to get it how you like it). But they do offer it in Olive, walnut, boxwood, cherry etc. as well as going as far as to offer custom labeling and even raw handles that you can profile yourself.
I bought three of these 2 years ago while in France from a opinel knife store, one was in Turkish olive wood and the other 2 in Turkish walnut in individual packets, these were from the custom range so i was told all in no 5 size and none of them have got the markings on the side either. These have stainless steel blades. strange.
Carried one before I even got into EDC and pocket clip folder tactical bullshit and it still sets the standard for what a knife should be. Absolute perfection in a knife.
I have not heard or seen a bad review about this knife yet! Haha! It's literally the first and only knife I have not heard a bad overall review of... It's almost like everyone doesn't have a choice but to own this knife! 🤔
Beautiful set! Can't lie though, the handle of that one blade not being stamped would bug me...probably too much to not try and switch it out with a stamped one!
I was going to ship it back for a new set but then it started to grow on me that its different, never saw that before so I thought Id keep it for being different
I have a carbon steel beechwood #7, and a stainless oak #8. I love them both. I would love to get an entire set some day. It's on the list of things to buy, just not too high on the priority list.
First I love both the 6 and the 10 I have in carbon. But there is kind of a wave affect on utube with knives. It's almost like the fashion world. What's hot and such. I like it because I don't watch every knife guy on utube. And probably 50% of my purchases begin here on utube. So I'm grateful when a blade is trending. It gives me a chance to get more info on something I'm considering. Good job dude.
They used to make a #13 that was ridiculously oversized, almost like the size of a machete. Its a novelty more than an EDC unless you needed to hack down tree limbs on a daily basis.
No.6 it seems, I think the smallest they produce nowadays is No.2. So smallest to bigger on the right side are 2-3-4-5-6-7 Also counting from large to small, the biggest is a No.12. They don't produce No.11 anymore so there's 12-10-9-8 on the left side, and then 7-6 from the bottom up on the right side. I've got a bunch of these knives, some of which for 30 years. Fine knives, picked them up in France when I was there. Sharpens very well to a good sharp edge, without too much effort. They'll last a long time if you don't abuse them. Handle is well designed and gives a good grip. Would certainly recommend them.
Nō6 is smallest with locking ring. Nō7 is the perfect smaller size. It's nice to carry in trouser pocket and comfortable between two or three fingers n thumb of big or man's hands. Nō8is too big for comfortable edc in trouser jeans pocket and doesn't really fill a man's hand like the Nō9 which is best to do real normal work with. Nō10 is slightly too big for average household uses, because he bigger handle could generate too much twisting forces and snap or chip the Carbon blade. Nō8 maybe best to fill a boy's or woman's hand.
Do you want a small pocket knife? get the No6. If you want a big hand filler, then get the 8. Personally I find the No7 to be the best compromise between size in pocket vs comfort in hand.
I have an opinel 9 and its perfect for me(I have relatively small hands). I also refinished it with burning the handle and sanding it and coating it. Looks great
Please help i bought a opinel no3 inox steel knife and the blade is quite this due to the small knife how can i fix the knife from bending like a saw blsde every time i use it?

I was hoping you were going to review each by size and number.

You should make a "bucket list of knives" video or maybe a series of videos lol

I bought one in California and I use it for work honestly one of my favorite knife brands
I feel the no 7 is the best in my opinion for edc small enough for it to be comfortable in the pocket and big enough to get the job done

They have some upgraded #8s with different wood that are unmarked. I have an olive wood. Gorgeous
I have a 2 a 7 and a 12 explore. Love all 3 of them.
Own 2 of these purchased in the early70's I think...one has spent its life as a utility blade in my in house tool box and the other in the garage sticking in a block of cedar on my work bench..always handy...easy to sharpen...lots of patina..
They have a nice garden set of knives and I like the 15 slim for a fillet fishing knife.
I just got a no. 8 today and so far, I love it
Never gave much thought on these but going to try one out.
Bought #9 21yrs. ago and still going strong .

I bought one of these in france. I not only use it for filleting fish, but also for carving and whittling, which it is very good at. Is this bad?
Great collection i have 2 opinel have to get some more soon.
What are the sizes for all of those opinels? Like certain inches for all of those?
I have always liked the looks of these knives.
the carbon ones tend to be able to have a much more wicked edge on them, its why i whent with that verses the stainless.
I have the #8 in carbon steel. I'm glad you opened the teeny one as I wanted to see it up close. Cheers.
hello to France! In my country every man go to 18 years got a présent to his father a Opinel!! Thank's for this quality revue!!
Got an opinel no. 6 and I love it as a pocket knife. Really want a no. 2 now.
Nice! Now you need number 13.

I have a green hsndle Opinel 8 stainless, freat knife !!! Opinel also has the 12 and 18 folding saws
I've been eyeballing them and been looking to buy one. However I wish they would have more exotic wood handle options.
+aHigher Power

Mick Dundee approves of that plan

Opinel No. 6 INOX... had it for 7 years. Got it when I was 17. I love it.
Hated them at first but love the knives once you get to use it. Had my n. 9 for a number of years now. Patina is a wonderful thing!
Been looking for a solid cheap knife to have around. Ordering an opinel 8 right now.
Jeff, think there may be any value to that factory mishap? Just a thought. May want to grab another to EDC and keep that one nice and shiny for value.
I have not heard or seen a bad review about this knife yet! Haha! It's literally the first and only knife I have not heard a bad overall review of... It's almost like everyone doesn't have a choice but to own this knife! 🤔
I've never been odd at all, but once I noticed that one knife i couldent stop looking at it
i bought myself a nr 8 outdoor for the boyscouts and a nr 7 in orange wich i was able to get razorsharp with a little diamondstone
I really love this set, such a simple and beautiful collection.
I love these. I have the 10, 9 and 7.
I love opinels. I have two, one with a beech wood handle and one with a walnut handle. I also prefer the carbon steel blades. They stay sharp forever.
I have the N.08 Inox (stainless). A great conversation piece and a staple in my edc rotation
Beautiful set! Can't lie though, the handle of that one blade not being stamped would bug me...probably too much to not try and switch it out with a stamped one!

cutlerylover if it's a "misprint" then maybe it's a rare variant!
Hi im a huge fan!
Ur soooooo lucky for ur opinel knives can u do a give away
I like the knife without the opinel print on the handle. Hope I get a few without the marking!
Sweet looking set.
You miss the opinel #13 a.k.a. the beast folding machete.i have.cheers from Portugal
I got a beautiful stainless walnut handled No. 8
Lellobeetle I got bubinga wood maybe same one. Dark
I got the olive wood. Beautiful
I stumbled upon that set a few weeks ago. Good looking set. Strange about the markings though..
I would like to see some testing vids with the big one just wondering how hard it can be used
Hissatsu5 watch the Dutch Bushcraft Knives vid on it.
My No.7 Carbon lives on my belt. Hands down my handiest knife
Why get the carbon steel over the stainless?? the stainless won't rust as easy
I just ordered the opinel 9. Cant wait
Love those knives. I was always wondering why the four small sizes don't have a locking collar? I wouldn't want any of them to fold back on me.
I have a carbon steel beechwood #7, and a stainless oak #8. I love them both. I would love to get an entire set some day. It's on the list of things to buy, just not too high on the priority list.
Can you sharpen it on a rock because mine is the same as yours and it can sharpen mine on a rock
My first knife was made by Opinel and the one I had was the smallest one that still has a safety.
My first knife in my collection is the opinel no 8. still one of my favourite

Yo tengo mi cajita de la colección opinel pero de acero inoxidable 👏👏
Nice video.What does "EDC"mean?Just subscribed.
i have a 2 and an 8 .. love them !
Do you get to choose the wood type when you order the set?
so which size/model was the one that didn't have the marking? How did it work out as an EDC?
Was just wondering if the biggest one in the case is the biggest blade they make. Thank you in advance. God bless and stay safe.
They used to make a #13 that was ridiculously oversized, almost like the size of a machete. Its a novelty more than an EDC unless you needed to hack down tree limbs on a daily basis.

The best Knife in the World greetz from Germany
just picked up my first opinel today a no9 carbon very nice so far but now means more money needs spent to get them all haha
These knives are possibly the best "classic" knives you can buy. They're sharp, durable, and UK legal (if you don't use the locking ring)
I EDC a No.6 and it is just perfect for my needs. Opinels are great!
hi i've 2 1 12 and 1 8 very harp i think the one which it's not sealed it's not guinine.....i think oops if iam wrong
i daily carry an inox 8 opinel
simple but sharp when needed
I have only the smallest one (or something that is very similar) and you can really get them super sharp. I got a paper cut x)
bought a nr9 carbon last week...just like you said it's in the bucket list of knives
I want one of these to sand and refinish. I have no clue which size to get though.
Do you want a small pocket knife? get the No6. If you want a big hand filler, then get the 8. Personally I find the No7 to be the best compromise between size in pocket vs comfort in hand.
Ryan Sumner A lot of people seem to have the No. 8. That one will probably be the one I'll go with.
I have an opinel 9 and its perfect for me(I have relatively small hands). I also refinished it with burning the handle and sanding it and coating it. Looks great
Number 8 is the perfect size
Please help i bought a opinel no3 inox steel knife and the blade is quite this due to the small knife how can i fix the knife from bending like a saw blsde every time i use it?
Ive edc'd an Opinel No.8 for probably 5 years now.
I have a knackered no10
1? What are the knifes intended for? They are nice but im a little confused too there use.
they are just a french edc knife really with a interesting locking mechanism
Dude love your videos can you please do a summer knife collection 2016
Awesome set. Been edc-ing a #9 for a long time. Great blades no doubt.
That is an awesome price for 10 quality knives. Thanks for showing this
Opinel knifes are great for the price
i like the non marked one :)
Opinel rules! And great to customize! My custom No 10 is my edc he puts a couple of spuderco’s back in the closet! 😅
Love my NO. 08.
