It didn't. Dormammu was only required for the magical power to fuel Hulk's explosion. It was never meant to kill Dormammu, only to send Strange back in time so that he could alter history and prevent everything from happening.
I don't usually watch these but I gave this one a chance. So glad I did. This was absolutely fantastic! Thank you.
