I beam with pride every time I see her, hear her sing or hear her speak in another language. Can you even appreciate the magnitude of what this means for a black woman from Augusta, Georgia? I'm so proud of her. I wish I had known her personally. RIP beautiful one!
You shouldnt be impressed but rather ashamed of American education. Its normal & common in Europe to speak several Languages. Its the American education system for not realizing its importance and American arrogance, thinking everyone should speak OUR language. Leontyne, Bumbry, Varett are but a few who knew what they must do and learn to have an international opera career. It a shame they had to do it on their own or in Europe. Ive heard it said that Thomas Hampson is the male Jessye Norman. ( they both affected a grand, mid atlantic way of speaking that could sound pompous and phoney. She is very down to earth her, partly because its in German.

Learning other languages was /is part of their Opera repertoire which their Opera schools/classes helped them with. While they usually do learn outside of the American school system, they didn't learn it completely on their own. Only a very few have been dedicated enough for that. I don't see too many European singers learning other languages, fluently, as dedicatedly as Jessye did. They will spend most of their careers singing in their native tongue and picking up a language, phonetically, for a job outside of their native language, for a spell. Not long term. Artists like Jessye Norman are rare. It matters little though, with the art of translation that's employed and near perfect.
@Jolene8 it's only her invented accent, from no identifiable region or country when speaking. Awfully grand. Hampson has a bit of that too. Leontyne Price combined a putvon accent with down home southern is a fun way that perfectly fit her. I just have a particular interest in regional dialects and accents. I've worked in opera for 3 decades and am always surprised at how " normal " and down to earth opera singers are ( compared to actors in the theatre).Goldovsky said singers should be treated for what they are: geniuses. Not sure about that, but they cant be dumb or lazy.

she just loved so much Berlin , Vienna and Munich etc. in the 60/70ies , they were the best times of her life , that is why she feels so much at home and comfortable speaking german !!

Wenn dieses Konzert in München am Vortag die "Vier letzten Lieder" mit Celibidache gewesen ist, dann bin ich dort gewesen. Allerdings gab es keine Zugabe(n). Das mit den 15 Minuten stehenden Ovationen stimmt aber. Das war ein Abend, den ich nie vergessen werde.

she is incredibly down to earth, and playfully refuses to entertain repeated attempts of the interviewer to delve into the topic of elevating her as some goddess or idol. One great line she says "my life is complicated but i am not complicated" . She basically just emphasises that she just loves to sing and all the fuss around her is up to other people, she really is not concerned with it, but she loves and appreciates her audiences.

Lucia "ich wäre so gerne die Callas" Aliberti ... In der Opernszene der vergangenen Jahre hat Lucia Aliberti NIE eine signifikante Bedeutung gehabt ... Sie erschien als Callas-Kopie und ging als solche auch unter ... Kein Vergleich zur Legende Martha Mödl.
Sie haben natürlich recht. Aliberti ist eine sympathische Sängerin, die allerdings neben Mödl und Norman nur eine untergeordnete Rolle spielen kann. In dieser Liga hat sie nie gesungen.
Ich denke, man wollte drei Lebensalter haben: eine Sängerin ganz am Anfang (hätte ja was werden können), eine auf der Höhe ihrer Karriere und eine nach einer großen Karriere, die sie "hinausschleichen" lässt.
Es gibt das Gerücht, und als solches möchte ich es verstanden wissen, dass Aliberti mit der Mafia zu tun hatte und so an ihre Rollen kam. Vielleicht eine Legende, aber wenn man bedenkt, wo sie gesungen hat und mit welcher "Stimme", dann fällt schon auf, dass da irgendwas faul war. Allerdings fragt man sich auch, wie Nadja Michael und Netrebko zu ihren großen Auftritten gekommen sind bzw. kommen. Auch da wundert mich so einiges.
Ich habe Frau Aliberti kurz nach der Sendung in der Jahrhunderthalle in Höchst gehört - stimmlich enttäuschend und aufgesetztes Primadonnengehabe. Kein Wunder, dass man nichts signifikantes danach mehr von ihr gehört hat. Man kann Primadonnen halt nicht machen, sondern erst der Rückblick zeigt, welche einmalige Ausstrahlung eine Sängerin hat.
Jessye Norman war die Größte ihrer Generation. Sie wird fehlen. Kiri Te Kanawa höre ich gerne, aber ihre Stimme war "nur" schön, deshalb keine Primadonna. Eine, die das Zeug zur Primadonna hat, hatte im Jahr vor dieser Sendung ihren internationalen Durchbruch. Cecilia Bartoli. Auch schon Ü 50. Vielleicht bleibt ihre Stimme noch 10-15 Jahre...

123pailin Jessye Norman is definitely a diva, and a great legend. Just because you might favor Mödl certainly does not and should not detract any celebrity from the other two ladies, especially not Norman who enjoyed far greater acclaim by this point than either of the others.

Es gibt das Gerücht, und als solches möchte ich es verstanden wissen, dass Aliberti mit der Mafia zu tun hatte und so an ihre Rollen kam. Vielleicht eine Legende, aber wenn man bedenkt, wo sie gesungen hat und mit welcher "Stimme", dann fällt schon auf, dass da irgendwas faul war. Allerdings fragt man sich auch, wie Nadja Michael und Netrebko zu ihren großen Auftritten gekommen sind bzw. kommen. Auch da wundert mich so einiges.
Ich habe Frau Aliberti kurz nach der Sendung in der Jahrhunderthalle in Höchst gehört - stimmlich enttäuschend und aufgesetztes Primadonnengehabe. Kein Wunder, dass man nichts signifikantes danach mehr von ihr gehört hat. Man kann Primadonnen halt nicht machen, sondern erst der Rückblick zeigt, welche einmalige Ausstrahlung eine Sängerin hat.
Das einzige was hier wirklich nervt, ist die Simultanstimme.
Jessye Norman war die Größte ihrer Generation. Sie wird fehlen. Kiri Te Kanawa höre ich gerne, aber ihre Stimme war "nur" schön, deshalb keine Primadonna. Eine, die das Zeug zur Primadonna hat, hatte im Jahr vor dieser Sendung ihren internationalen Durchbruch. Cecilia Bartoli. Auch schon Ü 50. Vielleicht bleibt ihre Stimme noch 10-15 Jahre...
Meiner Meinung nach übertrifft Martha Mödl an Charme die beiden anderen Damen.

123pailin Jessye Norman is definitely a diva, and a great legend. Just because you might favor Mödl certainly does not and should not detract any celebrity from the other two ladies, especially not Norman who enjoyed far greater acclaim by this point than either of the others.
