I had the privilege of watching her perform one evening...when she walked out on the stage we all felt we were in the presence of a majestic queen...never felt that before or since
She possessed one of the great voices of history and personified class, intelligence and the very highest standards of professionalism. The world is diminished by her absence.
There are few people in this world who can/could be called magnificent, Jessye Norman was one of them. A magnificent citizen/artist/humanitarian/singer. I was privileged to hear her sing. May she rest in eternal Glory.
Jessye Norman was a gift and a blessing. Please lets honor her memory by being loving to one another. Her legacy was not just her singing, but her grace and presence as a wonderful singer-she was magnificent! Thank God for her life.
She’s an absolute treasure. When I graduated Harvard, she happened to be there that day. As I walked past, she reached out to me and took my hand and congratulated me. She was so sweet and kind and I always hoped to meet her again. God rest her soul
I was with her over the Summer as her assistant, she taught me wisdom, compassion, beauty and truth. Ms. Norman was not ready to say goodby yet to this world. Glad that you met her at Harvard so did I, but at a different year when President Mandela was invited.
@@jovanrameau3578 I was shocked when I heard she died because I had seen a recent appearance (a few months ago) where she seemed to be in good health. I heard she died of sepsis (systemic infection) which is rather unusual with all the antibiotics that are available today. Usually it means the person did not receive prompt medical care which allows the infection to get out of control. Very sad.
@@piustwelfth Hello when you saw Miss Norman was she in a wheel chair? Her spinal accident happened in 2015. She was in a wheel chair until her death in 2019.
I had the honor and utmost pleasure to meet Ms. Norman at the Los Angeles downtown library. She was speaking as part of the ALOUD program and signing her memoir. I stood in line for her to sign my book and Ms Norman graciously spoke to me at length about my artistic projects. Ms. Norman was so supportive to a stranger! I was stunned and could hardly believe I was listening to her. I will treasure forever the pictures I had the presence of mind to have someone take. What a precious soul she will always be! may she RIP
She is so wonderful, and had so much life in her still, one has the feeling that even though she wasn‘t totally young, she should have lived many more years, contributing.
An international accent. The first time I heard her speak I was hooked. Such a delightful, high spirited, thoughtful and exacting human being. The world is a sadder place without Ms Norman.
I have always respected Jessye Norman's great voice and artistry. However, in recent weeks i've been watching interviews of her, and to my pleasant surprise, I discovered just how wonderful of a person she truly seemed to be. I could listen to her talk all day! A unique blend of class, regal appearance, and intelligence, BUT also warm and down to earth. The real personification of a what a Diva should be! Thank you God for gifting us with this great lady for the time she was on earth.
On learning of Jessye Norman’s passing I came across the appalling BBC hard talk interview where La Norman laid out (extremely elegantly) a very rude and limited interviewer...it’s so lovely to see Norman here relaxed, respected and laugh out loud funny. Thank you for posting. ✌🏼👸🏾
Hers is a legacy of Love that makes the heart beat faster. Yet, my heart is heavy she is now gone. Spirit remains, and she has given to mine. For that, I will never stop loving her. She was a living miracle amongst us, a true legend the likes of which rarely passes this way even once. May she rest in peace knowing that she made a meaningful difference. Ms. Norman xxx
I saw Ms Norman twice by chance in Manhattan in a MAC Cosmetics store on both occasions and on both occasions I'd introduced myself and I told her how much I'd admired her and that my mother admired her also. Ms Norman was pretty with lovely skin, very smiley, polite, approachable and little bit pompous 😆 but not rude just a little haughty in the way that Frasier and Niles Crane were. But the same kinds of things said about Ms Norman have been said about other famous opera stars. They all take themselves very seriously and have to have things just so all the time. Ms Norman was a great talent with a beautiful voice and she completely gave herself to her craft. RIP
A phenomenal interview with international vocalist, Ms. Jessye Norman. I ascertained Norman immensely insightful, wise, charming, experienced, open, opulent elegant moving speaking voice, socially and politically cognizant, intelligent. However- I wish the interviewer would have asked unusual questions. Questions that are not the scripted. For example, husband, family, hobbies, pet pives, foods, best places she traveled and liked, movies, getting older, death, and what brings her joy at her current age? Most the questions asked I knew the answers.
I'm so saddened by the loss of this wonderful legend, but so glad that she existed during my lifetime and that I have the opportunity to experience her exquisite gift. With that being said, this interviewer is so cringy! I don't know if it's nerves or what, but he seems like he has no idea how to conduct this interview.
I finally understand what she means about having to say no to things that are not age appropriate. People WILL give you contracts for some veeeery age inappropriate rep., even now a days.
It is truly a sad week : Jessye Norman and Diahann Carroll and although some new comers are very talented, their artistry, elegance and sophistication will never be equal.
This is a lovely interview, but I wish that the microphone was attached to Ms. Norman's collar so she would not constantly have to be concerned with constantly holding it to her mouth. At times, she would forget to keep the mic to her mouth and the sound would suffer. Just a belated thought, that nothing can ever be done about it. RIP Ms. Norman.
I regret I missed Norman when she was in Toronto...Has anyone heard a better soprano in the Beethoven Missa Solemnis (with Levine and the BPO) or a greater soloist in Strauss's 4 last songs?
In nineties Miss Norman performed in Minneapolis. Only standing tickets were available. My ex and my friend refused to join me. I set on a stool in the back for the first part of the concert. She was a definition of grace, and a great artist. I was in seventh heaven. It was a great evening and I am forever grateful I had the opportunity to experience Jessye Norman brilliant presence.
She was known as a "dramatic" soprano because she had a huge sound that which displayed the dark colors of the voice. She had a big lower range so she could some mezzo roles. She was definitely not the light coloratura type so she didn't sing many baroque or light Italian roles although she did sing Purcell and a few Handel songs.
Does anyone know why her accent when she speaks is more British than American? I read that she was born in Georgia, is that a common accent for that area? Or she trained herself to speak in this way?
The TIFF host could have asked her questions that were different from the usual run of the mill ones. All the ones he asked had been asked of her multiple times over the years. I'm sure she has some control over that of course but there must have been room for more interesting ones. Also, the clips that they played during interview were not rare but found right here on RUclips. So you have a once in a generation artist affording fans a once in a lifetime opportunity only to ask her run of the mill questions. In my opinion it was badly done. Jessye did well but Tiff's presentation and program was sub-par.

That laughter! Rich, clean, and powerful!
Mrs Jessye Norman has a "beautiful Kindheart"/ Great singer. I was honored to attend several of her performances thank God.

Can’t believe she’s gone. She was the superhero of opera. RIP Legend (1945-2019).

Beautiful speaking voice, so well spoken. A magnificent lady. One of my favourite opera singers.

My prayers go out to her family. She will be sorely missed not only by them, but the world. Diva can hardly describe the brilliance of her stardom.
I love the respect and love the audience gave by giving her a standing ovation when she came on stage.

Louis Lark you might have, other people may not have been so fortunate.
There is nothing nowhere about her private life. NOTHING she was immensely private just like the great Ella Fitzgerald
I was with her over the summer, she is everything you wrote about her and more. Cheers!
She never married but was close to her siblings and their families.
She was more than wonderful....... far too young!!! A true legend......R.I.P
She was delightful, amazing & had a great sense of humor! 💔
A Jessye Norman le gustaría que su legado sea darle oportunidades a los jóvenes: eso se llama grandeza. ¡Buen viaje Jessye: tu arte es inmortal!
Man we did not see any clips bummer still love her RIP Madame
She’s just the best
Great interview! La Norman schooling AND spilling tea at the same time. Love it!

Also the Immolation Scene from Gotterdamerung with Kurt Masur; really mesmerizing.
RIP Jessye Norman
Can you please post the screening with Jessye Norman???
Why you all didn't show the clips?
What kind of SOPRANO was she? What was her vocal range? RIP

Mi piace molto, ma vorrei in lingua italiana, grazie
Why is she on a wheel chair ?
She had a spine condition that she unfortunately never recovered from fully. It is unfortunate because she was incredible.
