- This Heckel 6000 series bassoon had been poorly finished with a thick, synthetic varnish. Varnish like this can choke the acoustics of a bassoon, by restricting the natural resonance of the wood. The colours were also inauthentic and poorly applied, so we decided to restore its original colours, using specialist dyes and varnishes. Watch Part 1 of the transformation of this world-class Heckel #bassoon!

Hello! and thank you for putting up this video. I'm a flautist and there is nothing for the Concert C wood flute like this. Everyone wants to play one. No one wants to refurbish one. I just bought and old wood flute, and the keys looked like brass. I thought why would you use brass for the keys on a lovely wood flute. I used Simichrome polish on it and it now looks like silver. lol I finished the keys in one evening. Now I need to refinish the wood. The wood needs to be cleaned and refinished. I just purchased Tung oil and Hemp oil. I don't know if those will work. This is my first time trying anything like this. I've not been this intense about anything in such a long time. I'm loving this, but a bit of guidance would help. I can always take it into a repair shop, but my soul will be happier if I did this on my own. I will take the keys to the repair shop to be repadded with Pisoni S2 pads. I sure wish you were here in NYC. Thank you for this. If you have a Boehm flute refinishing project, please put up that video. It would also be great to know what sealants you are using. Thanks again. You do splendid work.
It looks great, but I was hoping for more authentic stripes. I have seen the joints covered in clay, then the clay removed where they want stripes, then they use a torch to burn the stripes into the wood. Were you not able to use heat because this is a refinish?
Where are you guys located and how much is a refinishing,???
