      @@Icypenguigo I second the request for Daufy to watch. Don't worry to much about the line. It was just a quick mention in a listing of ships in a fairly throw-away line. It just serves as confirmation they share the same universe! Actually, the authors are probably fans of each other or friends or something. @@PsychoMuffinSDM Also the show "For All Mankind" presents an alternative history where the Soviets landed a man on the moon before the USA, and that leads to a different timeline where the space race between the USA and USSR never ended. It is a known fact at this point that people in extreme circumstances form a very strong bond. As strong as family/best friends/lovers. It happens in War. It happens in extreme exploration. It even happens in hostage situations. So the fact that the whole crew was willing to risk their lives and never see their families again is not uncommon or even a surprise.

    • @fedos
      @fedos 2 года назад +3

    • @dragonstryk7280
      @dragonstryk7280 2 года назад +5

      ALSO, you have to remember, Astronauts with NASA are actually psychologically tested for compatibility, not just individually, but as a crew. Crews are LITERALLY psychologically chosen to bond. One of the things Watney was chosen for (This is from the book), was his sense of humor as a grounding and bonding element for everyone else, as well as his general optimism being useful to survival (We see so much evidence of this throughout the movie). So losing a crew member for astronauts isn't just like losing a battle-buddy, it's literally like losing a major appendage.

Martinez was military as was the commander...being military vet myself you have to understand leaving a man/woman behind is something you just don't do. If there is chance to save him/her, you do it. A steely eyed missile man is an astronaut or engineer who quickly devises an ingenious solution to a tough problem while under extreme pressure.
    This term/phrase is a reference to Engineer John Aaron who was the one who devised the recovery of the power systems on Apollo 12 when it got struck by lightning during launch and they prevented the mission abort of the whole mission. His actions rewarded him with the nickname of "Steely-eyed Missile Man."
    He was also there at Apollo 13 to oversee the rationing of the spacecraft's power during the return trip and helped devise the power-up sequence which helped those astronauts re-enter Earth's atmosphere with limited power. Speaking of which, Apollo 13 is another good movie recommendation I would like to suggest.

    It wasn't the hydrogen that caused the airlock to explode - it was simple wear and tear. In the book, it's explained that there were 3 airlocks but he kept using the same one. And he was using it way beyond its natural lifetime. So material kept stretching and eventually gave and tore. And that caused the explosion. Also, the reason they were out in the storm at the beginning was that it was strong enough to blow over their rocket. And if that happened, they'd all be stranded.
    I'd recommend the audio book narrated by Wil Weaton (Wesley from ST:TNG). There are lots more things that go wrong for Watney!

    I thought about what you did, that they didn't show Mark's family, or him communicating with anyone on a personal level on earth... but, what the author and Director were trying to emphasize was that he is ALONE on Mars. Not just the farthest man from home, but the furthest human in the history of our species. For most of his problems surviving - there is no help, there is no rescue, and there is NO ONE. They wanted you to feel the full power of that. The full weight on his shoulders when he was breaking down in the MAV just before launch.
    In the book (which I cannot recommend highly enough!) His communication with Earth is cut off when the Pathfinder probe shorts out - he got just enough help to make the trip to the Ares 4 site, but, was then cut off again. He made that journey across Mars ALONE, in every sense of the word.

    • @logandarklighter
      @logandarklighter 3 года назад

      I'm not sure if the short-out of Pathfinder DIDN'T happen in the movie version. A lot of that whole sequence is montage with little or no dialogue. So... we the audience may be left with the impression that he has communication with NASA all the way to the MAV. When perhaps he doesn't? I mean - why leave the "Space Pirate" dialogue in if he still has comms? Doesn't make sense.

    A few comments.
    Firstly, as noted, the Martian atmosphere is only one percent of Earth's so even a huge gale would feel like a light breeze, and would not threaten anybody's life, nor could it tip over a spacecraft.
    Amusingly, the author of the novel, Andy Weir, acknowledges this, forthrightly, and says NASA works so hard to keep astronauts safe that he couldn't think of any other scenario that would get Watney stranded, so he fudged that bit.
    After that, though, all the science is pretty rock-solid.
    Weir took part in some science discussion threads, and at one point posed the, "How to survive if stranded on Mars," question.
    The idea caught the imagination of the participants, which included a bunch of actual science and engineering types.
    They promptly got to work on the problem, and much of the science included in this story came from that, and some NASA guys say a lot of it passes reality-checks.
    As an engineering-type, yourself, I figured you might appreciate that. :)
    Since you liked this, you'd probably like the film, "Moon," as well as "Gravity," with Sandra Bullock.
    You'd probably also appreciate the TV show, The Expanse, which is available on Amazon Prime. :)

    "John Q" (2002) with Denzel Washington, James Woods Anne Heche and more. A heart wrenching story of how far a father will go, to save his child.
    "My Life" (1993) with Michael Keaton and Nichol Kidman. Touching tear jerker, about creating messages to help in preparing your child for life ahead, knowing you won't be there yourself to give that help.
    "Batteries Not Included" (1987) with Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy. Comedy Sci-Fi with a heart that everyone in the family can(and should) watch.
    "Kelly's Heroes" (1970) with Clint Eastwood, Donald Sutherland, and many others in this huge ensemble cast. Under-rated wartime caper comedy/drama.
    "Little Shop Of Horrors" (1986) another ensemble with Rick Moranis, Steve Martin and John Candy. A dark comedy/horror/musical, about a nerdy florist who finds his chance for success and romance with the help of a giant man-eating plant who demands to be fed. (the 1960 original isn't bad, but I personally prefer this version)
    *a couple animated suggestions;*
    "Heavy Metal" (1981) huge ensemble voice cast of movie stars and well known voice actors including John Candy, Eugene Levy and Harold Ramis. Interconnected stories separated in chapters by differing art/animation styles, made famous by the magazine the movie gets its title from.(and a soundtrack that makes the watch, that much more worthwhile)
    "Ferngully: The Last Rain Forest" (1992) Tim Curry and Robin Williams, (and Christian Slater), need I say more? :-)
    *And just a personal suggestion. Not a movie, per se. More of a documentary concert film.*
    "The Last Waltz" (1978) directed by Martin Scorsese, The Last Waltz is a concert by the Canadian-American rock group The Band, held on American Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 1976, at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco. Advertised as The Band's "farewell concert appearance", (and includes candid video/interview segments).
    The concert saw The Band joined by more than a dozen special guests, including their previous employers Ronnie Hawkins and Bob Dylan as well as Paul Butterfield, Bobby Charles, Eric Clapton, Neil Diamond, Dr. John, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Ringo Starr, Muddy Waters, Ronnie Wood, and Neil Young.
    *A must watch for for anyone that is a fan of music. No matter the genre.*
    I will always recommend this video.

    There are only two flaws that really jump out with this film. One, that Watney plants a dozen Yukon Gold potatoes and ends up harvesting a crop of hundreds of reds, purples, and russets, can be put down to mutation owing to alien soil.
    The other is a bit more fundamental. Given Mars' light gravity and thin atmosphere, a class 5 hurricane there would cause zero visibility, but that's about all. The winds wouldn't have the strength to knock Earth-born humans off their feet, let alone send equipment flying. However, it would pose a significant risk of lightning damage, to the hab, to people, and, as the tallest thing on the horizon, the MAV. So, if we close our eyes and pretend Watney was knocked cold and his suit monitor fried by a lightning strike, then fell down and impaled himself on the base antenna, the whole rest of the film still works as is.

    In the beginning, the storm was going to be too strong for their rocket ship to stay upright. That's why they had to leave the planet, otherwise they would have all been trapped there.
    They stuck with the book mostly, Watney's parents only had a couple small scenes in the book. They weren't all that important.

    Great reaction, cheers for watching what a lot of us consider as a modern masterpiece from the great director that is Ridley Scott. This may come off as nit-picky or negative in nature but please take it with a grain of salt and just something to think.
    I noticed how in this reaction and in your Prestige reaction that you really want to see parents involved in these movies. Understandable for wanting to learn more about characters and I completely get that but it's important to mention that in theatre, most information is typically only going to be present that will be relevant. So sometimes that means if there is no parents scene, there may be no parents as that question is never answered as it may not be something important to the story or movie. As someone who has lost a parent at a young age, and for the many of us who may have had to live with one parent or even with none past teenage-hood that the assumption of everyone having parents living and present can be hard us for to take in every movie as the question is in real life, and that leaving those things up to interpretation can be something we seek refuge in as not every person will have their parents in their life, and that is okay. It's in the same way that most people will respect the process that is having lived and died when they lose grandparents we who have lost those who raised us move on knowing those loved will be with us, in their impact on how we grow and have grown as a person, in our thoughts and in our heart. Just food for thought, not offended by any means just thought I'd pipe up for those who may be hurt by that assumption as the internet can be a place for those that are hurting to find refuge. Glad you liked The Martian and keep up the good work

    Given that the Martian atmosphere is less than 1% (around 0.6%) as dense as that of the Earth, the hurricane-force windstorm that stranded him on Mars is probably the least accurate thing in the film. (Flying "like Iron Man" is a close second...he'd have been in an uncontrolled spin trying that, not flying in a straight line. In the book that suggestion was never taken seriously...it was just a joke.)

  • @plumfun6750
    @plumfun6750 3 года назад

    Great movie! Quite accurate, with a couple of "Hollywood exceptions" (ex: the storm; the atmospheric pressure on the surface of Mars isn't even close to Earth; the strongest, fastest winds on Mars would top out around 60mph...and that's just speed; Mars's actual 'air pressure' is about 10% of earth's at sea level, I believe).
    ..
    Really enjoyed it myself. Easily one of the top 10 space movies I've seen in 20 years.

    I really enjoyed the book by Andy Weir, the book was lauded for its scientific/technical accuracy. Admittedly, the initial problem from the storm is actually one of the major flaws, as the wind in the VERY thin Martian atmosphere would have to blow RIDICULOUSLY hard (several hundred mph) to have enough force to tip over the MAV. Still, that's just one point, and the movie does a pretty good job too - until the end. I absolutely HATE the whole "Iron Man" thing, it is such crap!!! They have an MMU (Man Maneuvering Unit) that is designed to facilitate astronauts moving about in space, but instead of the relatively small risk of untethering it, the guy punctures his space suit!? NO WAY! Also not what happened in the book. Stupid Hollywood.

      One of the things I really appreciated about the book is that at the end, Commander Lewis very much did not go down and take over the EVA herself, no matter how much she may have wanted to. Her responsibility is to the entire ship, and she let the EVA specialist do that specific task, while she supervised. It was very much a subversion of fiction tropes, and it really made the ending ring more truly for me.

    “Not sure why Martinez would have gone back up.”
    I don’t have a definitive answer for that, I’m currently about 4/5ths through the novel - when Martinez contacts his family about the rescue plan, she’s rightfully pissed and it seems to cause a rift in their marriage. So, maybe there’s a separation - or another motive

    • @k1productions87

      Once you've tasted space, it captures you and doesn't let go.
      Also, Martinez being a pilot suggests he was likely a Test Pilot before being selected for NASA. And they are a very special breed of flight junkies. Always happiest going higher, farther, and faster, and all the while thinking,... feeling,.... KNOWING they are better than every other pilot out there. Wouldn't be a good Test Pilot if you weren't sure of that.

    Love the book and think they did a really good job bringing it to the big screen, though I think Lewis shouldn't have gone out at the end instead of Beck as is the book her personal story arc worked around the fact that she needed to believe in procedure.
    She left Mark behind in the first place to save her crew, which was the correct choice, but learning he survived threw this into doubt. During the finale everybody had their own job to do that they were the right person for, procedure was followed and the rescue mission was a success.
    BTW I don't know what the message Mark sent that upset the President was in the movie but in the book it was just "Look boobs (.Y.)"
    Also love that "Boromir" being in the Council of Elrond was a complete fluke. They didn't even think about that scene when they cast Sean Bean.
