Join me in the Exciting video as I bring a nearly 100 year old machine back to life ready to be incorporated into my home workshop.
This Herbert Junior has survived a world war so hopefully can survive me working on it. Throughout the Video I progressively get closer to being able to use this great peice of machining history.

It's in reasonably decent condition for a 100yr old machine, glad it didn't get scrapped.
Yeah it is , amazing to think this machine has lived through a world war
@@MachiningwithJoe Yours is a later machine that was built into the 1970s. Mine is the early type as the column and head are one casting, and the lead screw arrangement is different. It also has an Air Ministry supply plate as it was supplied to Airspeed in Lymington in 1942.
It isn't 100 yrs old ,probably 1950s ,I had one that could have been 100 years old ,it was a completely different design ,more round looking castings and the wheel was on on a ram and driven by a flat belt. I now have one newer than yours with centralised lubrication ,probably 70s but looks very similar.
Nice little grinder 👍👍
Thank you
Great project nicely done
Thanks Patrick can’t wait to have it all completed and usable
Nice machine joe.
Thanks Steve
Very useful thanks. Cheers
Nice revival of a classic machine. Your grinding wheel appeared to be a bit out of balance, might want to check that.
Yeah haven’t dressed it yet just couldn’t wait to see it spinning. Will be covering that and the vfd install next video. Thanks for watching and being so observative all the best.
Great project. That will be a nice addition to your shop.
Yeah I’m hoping so Gerald fingers crossed for some really nice finishes.
I will bet it will grind like a champion. Thanks for the video Joe. I am looking forward to the next one.
Let’s hope so Joe, glad you enjoyed hopefully you won’t have to wait as long for the next one.
Brilliant acquisition and project. Great start to an interesting and informative restoration. Looking forward to seeing it progress. 👏👏👍😀
Thanks Andrew I hope it’s going to give some of my projects in the workshop that final mirror finish I’ve always wanted. Great to hear from you aswell.
What a nice acquisition.
Yeah so glad I managed to get one this size for my small workshop.
Well done mate (from Aus). I've just bought a new centre lathe and new mill, plus tooling to suit. They just don't look as good as older machines. I grew up around my Dad's workshop/s and I miss the 'feel' of that stuff. Anyway keep up the good work Joe. Yes mate, I've subscribed.
Thank for for subscribing to the channel, new or old great that you got some kit now to start machining your own projects. 👍
Looks good Joe, there will be some nice projects to follow, I am betting! Cheers!
Thanks Howder I am really chuffed with it so far
Translation: O (All). Piwa dwiw (Pillar drill, or drill press). Miw (Mill). Mperio (Imperial). Sado (saddle).
Nice piece of kit Joe; I assume the rise & fall of the knee is ok as you haven't shown any dismantling & checking on that.
Thanks Mexmanix, yeah there was no obvious issues with the knee so until there is I’ll leave alone. The old if it isn’t broke don’t fix it
Nice one Joe..
I have a pdf manual for that machine if you would like a copy sent to you let me know how I can contact you..
Regards
Dave.
Dave that would be amazing if you do, I have been searching everywhere for one.
If it’s ok could you email it over to me at
