  • VIA currently operates two J trains (Joined trains) a day eastbound from Toronto. The trains are split in the Brockville yards by the locomotive crew of the second train. The front train goes to Montreal without stopping in Brockville and the rear train goes to Ottawa via Smiths Falls.

***** There is a crew in the second unit so they can provide power when needed.

I meant 532, the yard switcher. There was a big lift set up in track 62 for a train to grab.

Who gives VIA train authority that it can leave the station ? Here in Europe almost all bigger stations have traffic office and station presenter who gives authority to engineer that train can depart by walking out of the station and telling engineer that train can leave. Station presenter than needs to contact next station presenter to tell him that he sent train in his direction.

+DorianCroatia20 I believe it is the service manager on the train who confirms by radio with other train crew that all the doors are closed and then radios the engineer (driver) to depart. The railway traffic controller (not a VIA employee but an employee of the railway owning the tracks) would set the signals for the train to depart but again much of this is done by radio authority.

Thanks for explanation. So, bottom line, none of the VIA station crew (in Kingston, for instance, or in other VIA stations) are included in direct regulation of traffic ? Only dispatcher in central office ?

    • @david-othen

      DorianCroatia20
Yes I believe that is true. At a terminal station like Halifax approval is received by the on board Service Manager from the ticket office (checking for late arriving passengers), maintenance and commissary staff (food & other supplies) as well as staff in charge of doors in each section - coaches & sleeping cars - before he gives the engineer permission to depart. In Halifax there are no signals so the engineer will have already received permission by radio from the CN Traffic Controller in Montreal to occupy the section of track to mile 4.2 Fairview Junction where the first signal is located.

+DorianCroatia20 Tracks are bi directional at Kingston and controlled by CN Traffic Controller (RTC) Depending on other traffic particularly freight trains VIA trains will be directed into either platform and a train announcement will be made by VIA staff a few minutes before the arrival of the train. When poosible they use the platform adjacent to the main building

Tnx for info :) I was little bit confused about this, but now I understand RTC mode of rail operating. Here in Croatia every station which is capable to hold train operations always has entrance signal and exit signal. Dispatcher has nothing to do with signals, rather main staff presenter of station is in charge of setting signals in his station to show "pass" or "stop" depending on current traffic circumstances in station.
