Sub-thirteen minutes by three seconds! We should celebrate. You’re going to make the Olympic team for sure. So what’s the bad news?” “I came in 20th.”
@@jakebaca264 Yes, I was 21 when I read in a newspaper that Said Aouita had become the first athlete in history to break the 13 min. barrier for the 5000m... It's been 37 years since, and the improvement has been astonishing... 14 runners in a race clocking 13m!
Wow..........13 men under 13:00, incredible! Once upon a time, the world record was 13:00.41 by David Morecroft of Great Britain . Congratulations to the champions for an outstanding performance and the other athletes on a fine race. Thank you for posting and greetings from America.
I think this is even more impressive than the WR, coz this eas an actual race. Gebhriwet won against Kejelcha and Jacob Kiplimo, lez that sink in!🎉😮😊😊 Just wow🥵
To put this race into perspective 2 time Olympic and 3 time world championship 5000m gold medalist Mo Farah's PB of 12:53.11 would place him 10th in this race
Last km 2:25. Last 800m 1:54. Last lap: :55. I think Kejelcha probably thought he was going to win, but 12:38.95 is only good enough for 2nd place!! Finally somebody else beat Bekele's run from 2005. The WR run by Cheptegei was the only run faster than his in almost 20 years until today. The track shoes aren't making that much difference or there would be way more runners who had beaten 12:37 in all those years. This was probably the greatest race ever, though. Cheptegei was soundly beaten and now Gebrwihet is probably the favourite for Paris.
All three definitely have a chance to win because top three finished a mere 4 seconds from each other and if anyone of them has a good day it’s game on
In the London 2012 Olympics, Gebrehiwot was hustling and bustling with Mo Farah in that iconic last lap mad rush for gold where 12+ athletes were all in it for the win. That was 12 years ago. Fast forward in time and Mo Farah was long past his prime and now retired entirely from competetive racing. Gebrehiwot is still racing, not just racing but is also brushing with breaking the 5000 meter world record. Unbelievable. He has a good longevity on the track racing similar to the great Yifter the Shifter.

Good to see Gebrhiwet back to winning ways.love this guy, quiet and deadly. Kejelcha did this front leading in the first more than 10 sub 13 minuete runners in once race in 2018 Brussels The winner was Barega in a U20 WR of 12:43 back then number 4 all time
A run like that 9-weeks out from the Olympics, I think Gebrhiwet runs the risk of being overcooked....I feel Cheptegei is playing the long game to perfection.
I wonder, if Gebrehiwot had smashed the world record as compensation for kenenisa′s world record which is taken by Ugandan Joshua in 2020. I am really sad!
I hope he will start at 5000m in Paris. I'd like to see him vs Jacob Ingebrigtsen, much more interesting than his competition vs some overhyped brit in 1500m

The athletes run in two ' channels ' because of the number of athletes in the race. The athletes on the outside when they reach the break line, will move over to the curb lane when they can without interfering other athletes. All athletes will run the same distance. It's called a 1 turn stagger start.
