And this game also has a section where he's directly referred to as Puck, and Titania gets named drop. So Shakespeare's plays do exist in this universe and they have happened. Kinda funny to think about how Romeo and Juliet exist in this universe

If he wanted Kratos dead he would have dropped on his house with Thor and Heimdall and all of them would have killed Atreus and Kratos easily. It was Kratos the one who rejected his peace offering. Hell even Thor, who had lost his kids at the hands of Kratos was able to let aside his personal bias to sit and have a drink with Kratos.
Macbeth? Wow, I never would have thought they drop the whole plot of Macbeth here, but given Mimir is from Celtic British Isles/Celtic Mythology, it not that surprised. Assassin's Creed Valhalla does it, but a GoW game set there would be wonderful to see.
Mimir is just one big Shakespeare reference. His character is straight up plucked from A Midsummer Night Dream. He was one of the Fairie King's jester in the play iirc
So the the original GoW games probably took place around the height of the Greek city states period so about 4-800 BC. The story of Macbeth has some specific historical figures in it that place it right in the middle of about the 1050s. Now we also know that Mimir had been imprisoned in that tree for 120 years, and let's call it 4-5 years between GoW4 and this one. Meaning at minimum this game would be taking place in the very late 12th century, and more likely the 13th. For one that means Kratos is pushing as old as 2000 years old, and also as much as 90% of that time is unaccounted for of him wandering the world. Unless he spent a millennia wandering around Scandinavia not learning any of the local language and customs.
it's 3 years between God of War 2018 and God of War Ragnarok. also I've heard that there were comics taking place between GoW3 and GoW4 where Kratos went to Egypt for a bit, still doesn't account for anywhere near all the time he's been unaccounted for but does show that he's probably been travelling around the world.
Nah your maths way off. Height of the Greek pantheon, with Athens and Sparta battling it out was about 500bc, fimbulwinter occurs btwn 536-541AD according to real records so that's about 1000yrs in btwn

You cant take historic facts to try to make a timeline. I go that the games take place millenia before Birth of christ, the time where gods walked the earth. We know the Greek saga takes place over I wanna say 20 years more or less Kratos family dies, 6 months later is ascension, 10 years later is gow, chains happens in those ten years. Then ghost takes place Idk exactly is but I think gow 2 is at least 10 years after the 1 one, gow 3 starts right after 2 ends, gow Norse is 150 years later, ragnarok is 3 years after. I say Kratos is around 200 years old

This is why im so excited for the next game. I want to see this world of myth and story developed. My guess is that this is some kind of metaphysical reality born out of our collective conisous understanding of these stories. Like if Odin had put on the mask and looked through that tear in reality he would have just seen a high school English class reading stories about how much of a dick he is. I mean the idea of there being other mythologies coexisting has been shown before. I think in God of War Chains of Olympus, Kratos fights the Persian King and later gains the powers of the Efreet. This means Persian and Arabian mythologies exist too so it ain’t too far off to think other mythologies can exist too.

In Norse mythology there's almost no information on Mimir's past, that's probably why the studio allows him to have all those adventures since it couldn't be disproven by the fanbase.

A few details that others have pointed out but I want to put in one comment: Mimir is saying this really happened instead of just being a play, meaning Macbeth (and perhaps more Shakespeare?) is canon to GoW. Macbeth’s name being cursed isn’t from the story itself. It’s a real life theater superstition that you can’t say the name “Macbeth” in the theatrical world or else you’ll have bad luck.
also subtle thing Atreus mentions that Mimir should write the stories down, is a allusion to the fact that much of Norse mythology is lost or rewritten. Almost all we know of it comes from one text and oral tradition.
I saw someone mention somewhere that Ragnarök might even be a Christian invention. The idea being that there's no reason to worship dead gods, or gods fated to die
If you want a good telling of it, I recommend the Fictional podcast, it's not as boring as the actual play at least in my opinion :) I listen to it on spotify but you can pretty much listen to it wherever
So I know people say the next game will deal with Egyptian mythology, but judging by all the references to English legends and Celtic folklore and myths, I personally place my money on Celtic mythology being the next step. I think we’ll get to Egypt someday, if not, the next few games might mix mythologies together in some way, but for a one to one focus, I see Celtic mythology getting the next focus
I wonder how dickish they would need to make the Egyptian pantheon if it ever comes to that. The only one that really stands out as evil is Apophis, and it's more of a primordial embodiment of chaos than an outright deity.

The dude always seems to start his stories exactly as I go to pull up to me destination. And I can't just *NOT* head his witty anecdotes, so there's easily an hour of gameplay where I just set the controller down so he can blather on about riddles or something.

Mimir isn't a god at all. he's always refered to as a man in game ("smartest man alive" (or dead), not smartest god alive or dead and at least in the 2018 game (I've not gotten Ragnarok yet) they make clear that men are not gods and gods are not men). also Kratos's god hatred never seems to extend to Mimir. he's probably a fae of some kind. the wiki claims that he's a former aesir god (which doesn't make sense since he's definitely not an aesir) and a fae. in the actual mythology he was an aesir god

You are wrong. Ragnarok would have happened regardless if he took the mead from Suttungr's chamber or not. Watch the lore of the ancients from AC to know why.
Also, Odin DID try to negotiate peace with Kratos at the start of the game, have you forgotten that? If he wanted Kratos dead he would have dropped on his house with Thor and Heimdall and all of them would have killed Atreus and Kratos easily. It was Kratos the one who rejected his peace offering. Hell even Thor, who had lost his kids at the hands of Kratos was able to let aside his personal bias to sit and have a drink with Kratos.

Macbeth? Wow, I never would have thought they drop the whole plot of Macbeth here, but given Mimir is from Celtic British Isles/Celtic Mythology, it not that surprised.
Assassin's Creed Valhalla does it, but a GoW game set there would be wonderful to see.

So the the original GoW games probably took place around the height of the Greek city states period so about 4-800 BC. The story of Macbeth has some specific historical figures in it that place it right in the middle of about the 1050s. Now we also know that Mimir had been imprisoned in that tree for 120 years, and let's call it 4-5 years between GoW4 and this one. Meaning at minimum this game would be taking place in the very late 12th century, and more likely the 13th. For one that means Kratos is pushing as old as 2000 years old, and also as much as 90% of that time is unaccounted for of him wandering the world. Unless he spent a millennia wandering around Scandinavia not learning any of the local language and customs.

also I've heard that there were comics taking place between GoW3 and GoW4 where Kratos went to Egypt for a bit, still doesn't account for anywhere near all the time he's been unaccounted for but does show that he's probably been travelling around the world.

This is why im so excited for the next game. I want to see this world of myth and story developed. My guess is that this is some kind of metaphysical reality born out of our collective conisous understanding of these stories. Like if Odin had put on the mask and looked through that tear in reality he would have just seen a high school English class reading stories about how much of a dick he is. Which would bring the thesis statement of the original games back into focus. Kratos is this random. Some dude no one has heard of before and he showed up in what should have been the same story that's been told a thousand times and he just fucked it all up. I mean the idea of there being other mythologies coexisting has been shown before. I think in God of War Chains of Olympus, Kratos fights the Persian King and later gains the powers of the Efreet. This means Persian and Arabian mythologies exist too so it ain’t too far off to think other mythologies can exist too.

In Norse mythology there's almost no information on Mimir's past, that's probably why the studio allows him to have all those adventures since it couldn't be disproven by the fanbase.

A few details that others have pointed out but I want to put in one comment:
Mimir is saying this really happened instead of just being a play, meaning Macbeth (and perhaps more Shakespeare?) is canon to GoW.
Macbeth’s name being cursed isn’t from the story itself. It’s a real life theater superstition that you can’t say the name “Macbeth” in the theatrical world or else you’ll have bad luck.
also subtle thing Atreus mentions that Mimir should write the stories down, is a allusion to the fact that much of Norse mythology is lost or rewritten. Almost all we know of it comes from one text and oral tradition.
I saw someone mention somewhere that Ragnarök might even be a Christian invention. The idea being that there's no reason to worship dead gods, or gods fated to die

So I know people say the next game will deal with Egyptian mythology, but judging by all the references to English legends and Celtic folklore and myths, I personally place my money on Celtic mythology being the next step. I think we’ll get to Egypt someday, if not, the next few games might mix mythologies together in some way, but for a one to one focus, I see Celtic mythology getting the next focus
I wonder how dickish they would need to make the Egyptian pantheon if it ever comes to that. The only one that really stands out as evil is Apophis, and it's more of a primordial embodiment of chaos than an outright deity.

Odin is basically like Macbeth with traits of Emperor Palpatine, Tony Soprano, Norman Osborn, Walter White, and Dutch van der Linde thrown in the mix.
I mean Mimir is literally Puck from A Midsummer Night's Dream, so this implies that Shakespeare's fantasy plays were all adaptations of stories told or inscribed by Mimir.
My theater class has an entire ritual that you have to do if you ever dare speak the name of the Scottish play, you have to do a circle around the auditorium while speaking this chant that I don’t remember

No, he takes a bit of inspiration from Kratos's lance strike, and uses the moniker "Shakespeare".

I always wondered what Mimir is, it’s clear that he is Puck or Robin Goodfellow so he was or still is Fae, or he is Fae who was turned into Norse God, or one of his parents was Fae and another one was Celtic God.
Mimir isn't a god at all. he's always refered to as a man in game ("smartest man alive" (or dead), not smartest god alive or dead and at least in the 2018 game (I've not gotten Ragnarok yet) they make clear that men are not gods and gods are not men). also Kratos's god hatred never seems to extend to Mimir. he's probably a fae of some kind.
the wiki claims that he's a former aesir god (which doesn't make sense since he's definitely not an aesir) and a fae.
